The Hands Beneath The Blood, Kasey Bell Jan 2009

The Hands Beneath The Blood, Kasey Bell

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

I love history. Always have, always will. And it’s true what they say: history really is written by the winners. Anyone who ends up on the losing side is always branded as evil by the winners. Some deserve it, and some don’t. Take the Germans in World War II. Now, I am in no way condoning the actions of the Nazi party, but the important thing to remember is that not everyone in Germany at the time was a Jew-hating, Hitler-loving fascist. In fact, most swore allegiance to the country, not the swastika. I started thinking about the following story …

Edward I And The Appropriation Of Arthurian Legend, Rachealle Marie Sanford

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

In recent years, an increasing interest in the appropriation of folklore by political leaders has led scholars to investigate potential instances where this may have occurred in the past. This work follows that tradition, examining the life and actions of King Edward I of England to determine if there are instances where he is making deliberate use of folk narrative for his own political aims. An analysis of several events discussed by past historians indicates that the king was intentionally manipulating the Arthurian legend, which was highly popular in Europe during the thirteenth century, to justify his claims to authority …

Senior citizens are the fastest growing demographic today, and the digital music industry is one of the fastest growing aspects of our economy. This study explores the relationships and underlying correlations between these two facets. Three research methods were employed: field observation of a musician targeting his music to the elderly; data analysis of this musician’s sales records; and a questionnaire seeking the purchasing and listening preferences of baby boomers and senior citizens. The results reveal that, as age increases, senior citizens’ comfort purchasing and listening to music through digital methods decreases. A negative correlation between age, nostalgic marketing, and …
