Recent Developments In Daniel Research, Erwin J. Joham

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This thesis analyzes and evaluates significant directions in Daniel research during the past fifteen to twenty years. The material is organized in two categories (a) introductory, (b) exegetical, which form the two main parts of the thesis.

In the first chapter on introductory material I review studies dealing with provenance, authorship, text, and literary style and form of the Book of Daniel. The second chapter examines the interpretations of specific portions of the Book, particularly chapter seven.

The general finding of this study shows a more cautious use of extra-Biblical sources for Daniel, and a growing emphasis upon the Biblical, …

Towards A Model For The Religious Nurture Of Black Young Adults In Urban Seventh-Day Adventist Churches, Byron Dulan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Black young adults in urban Seventh-day Adventist churches are not only leaving the fellowship of the church in alarming numbers, but those who continue with the church do not seem to be growing in spiritual maturity as might be expected. Written from the historical, sociological, and theological perspective, the thesis endeavors to analyze the dynamics at work in the Black church and among urban Black young adults, with a view toward developing a viable program of religious nurture at the local church level.

Since the 1940's, little has been written regarding religious nurture in Black churches of any Christian denomination …

The Evolution Of American Expository Prose Style As Exemplified By The Easy Chair Columnists Of Harper's Magazine, Cherie Rouse Aug 1981

The Evolution Of American Expository Prose Style As Exemplified By The Easy Chair Columnists Of Harper's Magazine, Cherie Rouse

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This thesis aims to describe the way American expository prose style evolved during the period 1851 to 1981 as exemplified by the Easy Chair columnists of Harper's Magazine. Major premises of the study are that style and meaning are the same, but that a writer chooses among various shades of meaning, sometimes on the basis of rhetorical strategy, and thus it is possible to make meaningful statements about a writer's style.

The research methods emphasized synthesis of many different kinds of information about each author's writing, rather than complete reliance on impressionistic judgement or on quantified data. For each author …

Faith And Readiness In The Faith Stage Theory Of James W. Fowler, Douglas Herrmann Jul 1981

Faith And Readiness In The Faith Stage Theory Of James W. Fowler, Douglas Herrmann

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

James W. Fowler's theory of faith stage development has received widespread attention and general approval, especially in religious education circles. The first part of this paper examines the stage theory of Fowler, concentrating on the concept of faith assumed by this theorist. The second part applies the theory to secondary religious, education, following the concept of "readiness" inherent in Fowler's work.

The research procedure for the first part consists of a survey of literature in three areas: 1. Fowler's published work from 1974, when he began, to the present; 2. critiques of Fowler's work; 3. the writings of selected theologians …

Joseph Bates' Logbook Of The Brig Empress: An Analysis And Appraisal, Jerry E. Daly Jun 1981

Joseph Bates' Logbook Of The Brig Empress: An Analysis And Appraisal, Jerry E. Daly

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In August of 1827 Joseph Bates embarked on the final voyage of his career. Throughout the eleven month trip he kept a daily journal in which he recorded his thoughts and experiences. While little is said about the life of a sea captain, Bates' record provides us with a glimpse into the private, inner man. Bates revealed his affection for the family and friends he left behind; his lack of patience for a crew that failed to see the importance of religion and temperance; his discouragement over trading in South America; and his respect and love for God. Bates' journal, …

Evaluation Of Blissymbolics As A Means Of Communication For The Deaf-Cerebral Palsy Population, Linda Howells

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purposes of this study are:

  1. To present the deaf-cerebral palsied population with a more functional means of communication.
  2. To test the validity of using a non-vocal means of communication, Blissymbolics, when other more traditional methods of teaching communication skills (sign language or verbal communication) have been ineffective.

Blissymbolics has been found to be an effective means of communication with cerebral palsy children who are unable to develop verbal communication skills. However, there is no research in the use of Blissymbolics with the deaf-cerebral palsy population.

The traditional means of communication used with the nonspeaking deaf person (manual sign language) …

The Evolution Of Prenatal Care In The United States : The Formative Years, Cristina M. Thomsen Jun 1981

The Evolution Of Prenatal Care In The United States : The Formative Years, Cristina M. Thomsen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In the early decades of the twentieth century prenatal care became an accepted part of routine obstetrical care. This thesis is a description of the evolution of the prenatal care idea in the United States during these years. Two approaches are used in this description. An internal approach to prenatal care notes the maturation of procedure and technique. An external approach notes the inpatient and outpatient suggestions for providing prenatal care, the suggestions for educating the public to value and expect prenatal care and the medical profession to provide such care, and the varied promoters of such care, with their …

Toward A Seventh-Day Adventist Theology Of Health, Hedrick J. Edwards Mar 1981

Toward A Seventh-Day Adventist Theology Of Health, Hedrick J. Edwards

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The Seventh-day Adventist Church espouses the Three Angels' Messages of Revelation 14 as its raison d'etre. In its view the special mission of its members is to take these messages to the entire world. Yet about twenty-five percent of the church's financial worth and a much higher percentage of its paid employees are involved in the healthcare enterprise. Does this fact represent a dichotomy in the church's mission, or is it theologically defensible?

This investigation submits that the denomination's involvement in healthcare and training in the healing arts is theologically defensible and does not represent a departure from or a …
