He Generously Filled His Horn Of Plenty With Beautiful Tone, Johannes Norrby

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

He was probably seventeen years old when I first met him. To me he seemed to be- if I may use the expression- a male Pallas Athena, she who sprang fully armed from her father's head. Jussi, too, materialized fully armed from his father's head. David Bjorling is said to have once said about his son: "There will never be another tenor like Caruso - perhaps Jussi."

Jussi Bjorling: The Supreme Singing Of A Shy Man, Stephen Hastings

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

On September 9 1960 the newstands of Stockholm were plastered with the news "Jussi dod i morse• (Jussi dead this morning). It is rare for newspaper to call an opera singer by his Christian name, but then Bjorling's relationship with Sweden was a very special one. 11 had begun forty-five years earlier, when his further David Bjorling-also a tenor-decided to take little Jussi (born on February 5, 1911) on tour with his brothers Costa and Olle. The "Bjorling Male Quartet" could not fail to win audiences over, with the boys dressed in traditional costumes singing music (including compositions by David …

Newly-Found Posters Illuminate The Bjorling Quartet's Activities; Medical Records Shed New Light On David Bjorling's Tragic Death, Harald Henrysson

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

Few posters were preserved from the Bjorling Quartet's tours. The Bjorling Museum owns four: two of them with date and place, from Leksand 1923 and Ystad 1926, thr other two without that information, but printed in 1923 and 1925. One poster from the Axberg Church near Orebro in 1922 is preserved in that church's fellowship hall, one is reported to exist in Halsingland but has not been found again, and one from the US tour is owned by a Bjorling relative here.

David Bjorling, Part Ii His Career After Studies In Vienna, Harald Henrysson

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

David Bjorling's first appearance after his return to Borlange was once more at Folkets Hus on Ascension Day, May 28, 1908. Frequent advertising had not raised much interest, and the audience was not large. Perhaps the reason for that was that a nearby amusement park opened the same day and its opening day party went on until late in the evening. David's varying program with arias, songs, folksongs and duets with baritone Arvid Kull was well received both by the audience and two reviewers.

Jussi Bjorling's Vocal Training, Michael Mayer Oct 2021

Jussi Bjorling's Vocal Training, Michael Mayer

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

The process of training to be a singer, especially an opera singer, is not very well understood by the general public. It is really a combination of learning to play music, as for other instruments, and training the body like a athlete to be the instrument. The musical part is pretty obvious. The singer is going to be expected to perform music at the highest level. The athletic part is less obvious: less obvious because if done well it is not noticeable to the audience. The reason it is necessary to develop the physical coordination of the body to such …

David Björling Becomes A Singer: Usa, Sweden And Vienna 1899-1908, Harald Henrysson

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

In all of its generations the singing Björling family has had close connections with the U.S. It was here it began —when David Björling got the education without which he might not have become a singer and thus Jussi, if he had been born, would have had quite a different future. Very little has been known about David’s first period in America, but this article, based on my presentation at the JBS-USA Salt Lake City conference, is an attempt to fill in that gap, as far as sources permit, and add something about his further education.
