Slave Unrest In Arkansas, Carol Linville

Arkansas, unlike some slave holding states, was never the scene for actual mass uprisings or armed revolts by slaves. Actual acts of resistance and rumors of insurrections did occur in the state. The universal fear of insurrection that was present throughout the South also plagued the mind of the Arkansas slave owner. The fear was not new; since the beginning of slavery, the fear was present and as early as 1672, fear was expressed by the colonists of a slave uprising. Part of the fear was stemmed from conditions of slavery in Arkansas that were inducible to slave unrest.

Although novels hold a secure, unquestioned place in twentieth century culture, they have not always claimed such a position. The novel, as everything else, had to have its beginning sometime, and, for this genre, that 'sometime' was the eighteenth century.

Called for by a greater literacy rate and the increasing leisure time of a society which fostered few forms of public entertainment, the novel began as an experiment. It was conceived in the minds of imaginative artists, was tested on paper, then evaluated and revised. The struggle for woman suffrage in Arkansas and the entire United States did not end until the twentieth century. It was a long and difficult process but in 1917 with the passage of the Arkansas Primary Suffrage Bill, Arkansas women were allowed to vote in primaries. Then, in 1920 they were given full suffrage rights through the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment. In order for these events to occur, women's traditional role had to change in Arkansas and the nation, and it had to be accepted by both men and women. To the ignorant visitor to Washington, Arkansas, it may seem a bit strange that this tiny, decaying Southern town played such an important role during the War Between the States. The strangeness disappears, however, when one learns of how its location in the South, its people, and its monetary and troop contributions meant to the war effort here in Arkansas. Even when the Federals took control of Little Rock, the state capitol, Washington volunteered its services to serve as the Confederate State Capitol. Illusion is an integral part of Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quixote and John Barth's The Sot Weed Factor. It plays an important part in both the characters of the protagonists, Don Quixote and Ebenezer Cooke, respectively, and in the lives and actions of several of the secondary characters. Furthermore, the reader of these works himself is influenced by the aura of illusion and fantasy which surrounds all the actions in these novels. The works of Petrarch, Donne, and Cervantes have in common a considerable emphasis on stock love situations. These stock situations include such occurrences as the meeting of lovers, the reaction of the lover to the disdain of his lady, the burning desire of the lover to be physically present with his lady, and the parting of lovers. A certain twist in a situation, originally used by Petrarch, in the poetry of Donne or prose of Cervantes, can provide an excellent insight into the ideas concerning love of all three authors. Berrien County covers an area of 600 square miles, with approximately 385,000 acres.lb The soils of Berrien County are classified in the Gray-Brown Podzolic Geological Region (Limy Materials). Five different land divisions are represented in Berrien County. The first of these is Land Division R. St. Clair and Blount soil series-of Land Division R are formed from glacial tills of clay loam, silty clay loam, or silty clay. Many methods have been found by which two men may solve a dispute between them. The methods can be broadly divided as either violent or nonviolent. The Civil War was a war of great suffering, pain, and ignorance in the medial field and on the battlefield. The Arkansas soldier suffered for lack of medical supplies, medical care, and food. If the fear of being wounded was not enough, the soldier was apt to die either in an unsafe hospital or on the battlefield due to exposure. Contagious diseases spread like wildfire through the camps, and medicines, if available, were scarce and inadequate. During the antebellum years, the First African Baptist Church had a significant influence on the religious and social life of Richmond Negroes. By the Civil War, several thousand blacks had been baptized under its auspices. In spite of white reluctance to permit an independent organization of Negro worshipers, the black members were allowed to leave the First Baptist Church of Richmond, a fact which countered the spirit of the times and distinguished this church.
