The collection consists primarily of two groups of letters. The first group were written by Arminda Holiday Clendenning of Freeport, Harrison County, Ohio, to her sister Ann Holliday Winder of Iowa, from 1850 until 1867. She writes of local and family news, life in the country, and later, as a young married woman, of her family and her husband’s business. Several letters mention travels and migrations of family and friends to the West.

The second group of letters were written by Robert Joseph Clendenning, grandson of Arminda Clendenning, to his family during the FirstWorld War. He describes his life in …

This collection is composed of the Carder family papers created primarily during WWII. The collection is principally composed of letters sent between various members of the Carder family, chiefly to and from Ancel, during his enlistment as a Marine in WWII. Another bulk portion of the collection is composed of greeting cards mailed for various occasions to Orton and Chloie, remembrance cards that were collected by Orton of his congregation, and religious materials related to marriages and baptisms conducted by Orton as well as his participation in WV Methodist organizational activities for the Fourth Street Church in Huntington. This collection is primarily composed of letters from George Hechler to his sister Kate Hechler during his service in the 36th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. The letters discuss George’s experience in the Civil War, covering camp life at Parkersburg and Summersville, to the battlefields of Lewisburg, Antietam, Chickamauga and others. All letters include typescript transcriptions of the text in separate folders, and one letter includes a piece of printed ephemera as an enclosure. The folder contains a condolence letter about the death of M.A. Ellison, a 1954 letter by John Q. Hutchinson about Ellison family history, newspaper clippings about the Ellisons, and personally reminisces from an unnamed person in 1939. Also included is a four page typescript entitled “Biographical Sketches of the Love Family”, possibly written by Enoch L. Ellison as it is written on the back of his letterhead.
