The Seven Heads Of The Beast In Revelation 17, Ranko Stefanovic Dec 2013

The Seven Heads Of The Beast In Revelation 17, Ranko Stefanovic

Faculty Publications

Any interpretation based on headline news or current events for the purpose of date setting and popular excitement is speculative and subjective. Some have done so based on Revelation 17. Such interpretations never result in the strengthening of our faith in prophecy; in actuality, they weaken our confidence in it. When understood properly, the prophecies of Revelation have practical purposes: to teach us how to live today and prepare us for the future. A right understanding of prophecy will also inspire and motivate us to try to reach others with the gospel message.

O Desafio Restante, Bruce Bauer

Eternal Recurrence In A Neo-Kantian Context, Michael S. Green Dec 2013

Eternal Recurrence In A Neo-Kantian Context, Michael S. Green

Faculty Publications

In this essay, I argue that someone who adopted a falsificationism of the sort that I have attributed to Nietzsche would be attracted to the doctrine of eternal recurrence. For Nietzsche, to think the becoming revealed through the senses means falsifying it through being. But the eternal recurrence offers the possibility of thinking becoming without falsification. I then argue that someone who held Nietzsche’s falsificationism would see in human agency a conflict between being and becoming similar to that in empirical judgment. In the light of this conflict only the eternal recurrence would offer the possibility of truly affirming life. …

Prior to the 1988 founding of the JAH, over three decades of archival work by volunteers and part-time staff had been done at Hope College, Western Theological Seminary, the Netherlands Museum and City of Holland, to pave the way for …

Legal Substitution And Experiential Transformation In The Typology Of Leviticus, Part 1, Roy E. Gane Nov 2013

Legal Substitution And Experiential Transformation In The Typology Of Leviticus, Part 1, Roy E. Gane

Faculty Publications

Some Christians emphasize the idea that Christ’s sacrifice accomplished a legal substitution, but they largely overlook the effect of experiential transformation. Others do the opposite, emphasizing a change of experience resulting from Christ’s sacrifice, but downplaying the concept that Christ served as our Substitute. The present research demonstrates that in the typology of the book of Leviticus, which serves as a background to the explanation of Christ’s sacrifice in the book of Hebrews, both legal substitution and experiential transformation are clearly present and fully necessary. In part 1 of this two-part article, we will examine the evidence for legal substitution …

Evidence From Flaws: Hellenistic Ceramic Production At Podere Funghi (Vicchio Di Mugello), Robert E. Vander Poppen

Faculty Publications

From 1996–2006, excavators of the Mugello Valley Archaeological Project documented two important contexts for understanding Hellenistic period ceramic production at Podere Funghi near the sanctuary at Poggio Colla: a kiln-waster midden, and a series of kilns located in the vicinity of a small residential structure. This article consists of the results of a visual and metric examination of the fineware material from the midden. The examination assessed the nature and prevalence of specific firing flaws associated with the productive process, and the data derived from this study are used to reconstruct some of the technical challenges faced by the Podere …

Faculty Publications

Discusses the literary precedents, manuscripts, composition, and biographical context for Tennyson's poem "To the Queen," first published in Match 1851, and argues that Tennyson's attitudes toward Queen Victoria and to his role as Poet Laureate were more nuanced and more conflicted than most critics have recognized.

Historical References And Allusions To Foreigners In The Dead Sea Scrolls: Seleucids, Ptolemies, Nabateans, Itureans, And Romans In The Qumran Corpus, Kenneth Atkinson

Faculty Publications

The Dead Sea Scrolls continue to shed new light on the religious history of the Second Temple Period. This unique library also describes many of the most significant historical events of this time. Although most research has focused on the religious content of these texts and their possible Essene authorship, relatively little attention has been paid to their historical and political contents. Although over 900 scrolls were found in the caves inside and around the settlement of Khirbet Qumran, relatively few contain proper names. Only eighteen names of identifiable persons appear in these texts, while other fragments possibly contain two …

Parallels Between Psalms 25-31 And The Psalm Of Nephi, Kenneth L. Alford Ph.D., D. Bryce Baker

Faculty Publications

Chapter 18 of the 2013 BYU Sperry Symposium volume, "Parallels between Psalms 25-31 and the Psalm of Nephi," by Kenneth L. Alford and D. Bryce Baker, highlights numerous similarities in the structure and language of 2 Nephi 4 (also known as the Psalm of Nephi) to wording found in Psalms 25 to 31 -- opening the possibility that Nephi may have consulted those psalms on the brass plates prior to composing his psalm.

The Lot Smith Cavalry Company: Utah Goes To War, Joseph R. Stuart, Kenneth L. Alford Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

In this chapter from "Civil War Saints" (2012, published by the Brigham Young University Religious Studies Center and the Deseret Book Company), Joseph R. Stuart and Kenneth L. Alford take a close look at the cavalry unit that was called to military service on April 28, 1862, at President Lincoln’s request. Their ninety-day period of service was the only unit-level active duty military contribution Utah Territory made during the Civil War. An earlier version of this paper, written by a student for the Library Research Grant Program, can be found here.

God Did An Awesome Thing: A Church Growth Strategy That Worked, S. Joseph Kidder Aug 2013

God Did An Awesome Thing: A Church Growth Strategy That Worked, S. Joseph Kidder

Faculty Publications

We think that the work of God is going to be finished by what we do, through programs we develop, resources we find, and talents we exhibit. Wrong. These are not the things of eternal significance. What really works is the Spirit of the Lord Almighty. We do not need more formulas, we need more filling. We do not need more plans, we need more power. We do not need more strategies, we need more Spirit.

A Prática Da Caridade E Da Beneficência Social Na Igreja Cristã, Wagner Kuhn Aug 2013

A Prática Da Caridade E Da Beneficência Social Na Igreja Cristã, Wagner Kuhn

Faculty Publications

Dealing With Doctrinal Issues In The Church: Part 4, Richard M. Davidson, Paul S. Ratsara

Summer Of Shrew, Part 4: Which End’S Up?, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner Jul 2013

Summer Of Shrew, Part 4: Which End’S Up?, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner

Faculty Publications

In the last of a four-part series on Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner explores how expanding the range of the titular Shrew to include male characters is actually a return to its original meaning. Pollack-Pelzner focuses on a long-forgotten Renaissance sequel to Shrew (John Fletcher's The Tamer Tamed) that takes the taming of men even further and turns its gender roles upside down.

Summer Of Shrew, Part 3: A Sly Conceit, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner Jul 2013

Summer Of Shrew, Part 3: A Sly Conceit, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner

Faculty Publications

In the third of a four-part series on Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner asks, what if Kate’s story isn’t the play’s only reality? Pollack-Pelzner explores how a drunken beggar and an earlier version of the script shift the brawling balances of the play and call into question who the real shrew is.

Summer Of Shrew, Part 2: Tamed? Really?, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner Jul 2013

Summer Of Shrew, Part 2: Tamed? Really?, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner

Faculty Publications

In the second of a four-part series on Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner argues that Shakespeare’s play raises challenging questions about the way we define gender roles, and the answers aren’t as obvious as they might seem.

Headship, Gender, And Ordination In The Writings Of Ellen G. White, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Faculty Publications

The study will focus on the teachings of Ellen White on the role of the Bible in this controversy and the principles for interpreting the Bible to find a solution to the current situation. The paper will also look at her understanding of equality and submission in God’s universal kingdom, and the function of headship in Jesus’ model of leadership and its relation to gender in regard to the qualifications for the biblical office of overseer in the church and their implications in regard to ordination. All of these aspects form an integral part of 16 Ellen White’s theology of …

Ellen Wh Ite, Ordination, And Authority, Jerry Moon

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to show that the same pattern of authority that gives order to the universe is also reflected in the divinely designed structure for both church and society on earth. In order to uphold the truth as it is in Jesus, the church must structure its delegation of ministerial authority in harmony with the Creator’s original design. .

Ellen White, Women In Ministry And The Ordination Of Women, Denis Fortin Jul 2013

Ellen White, Women In Ministry And The Ordination Of Women, Denis Fortin

Faculty Publications

What I would like to offer in this paper is that a careful consideration of Ellen White’s thought on the role of women in the church, taken in its nineteenth-century context, her understanding of the mission of the Seventh-day Adventist church, her counsels regarding ministry and its many functions taken in historical context, and her non-sacramental understanding of ordination and early Seventh-day Adventist practice of ordination, can support the case for allowing the ordination of women today.
