God Did An Awesome Thing: A Church Growth Strategy That Worked, S. Joseph Kidder Aug 2013

God Did An Awesome Thing: A Church Growth Strategy That Worked, S. Joseph Kidder

Faculty Publications

We think that the work of God is going to be finished by what we do, through programs we develop, resources we find, and talents we exhibit. Wrong. These are not the things of eternal significance. What really works is the Spirit of the Lord Almighty. We do not need more formulas, we need more filling. We do not need more plans, we need more power. We do not need more strategies, we need more Spirit.

A Prática Da Caridade E Da Beneficência Social Na Igreja Cristã, Wagner Kuhn Aug 2013

A Prática Da Caridade E Da Beneficência Social Na Igreja Cristã, Wagner Kuhn

Faculty Publications

Dealing With Doctrinal Issues In The Church: Part 4, Richard M. Davidson, Paul S. Ratsara

Faculty Publications

Controversial issues have the potential of splitting the church. To avoid this danger, church leaders need to exercise much care and, at the same time, show firmness when dealing with these issues.

Headship, Gender, And Ordination In The Writings Of Ellen G. White, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Faculty Publications

The study will focus on the teachings of Ellen White on the role of the Bible in this controversy and the principles for interpreting the Bible to find a solution to the current situation. The paper will also look at her understanding of equality and submission in God’s universal kingdom, and the function of headship in Jesus’ model of leadership and its relation to gender in regard to the qualifications for the biblical office of overseer in the church and their implications in regard to ordination. All of these aspects form an integral part of 16 Ellen White’s theology of …

Ellen Wh Ite, Ordination, And Authority, Jerry Moon Jul 2013

Ellen Wh Ite, Ordination, And Authority, Jerry Moon

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to show that the same pattern of authority that gives order to the universe is also reflected in the divinely designed structure for both church and society on earth. In order to uphold the truth as it is in Jesus, the church must structure its delegation of ministerial authority in harmony with the Creator’s original design. .

Ellen White, Women In Ministry And The Ordination Of Women, Denis Fortin Jul 2013

Ellen White, Women In Ministry And The Ordination Of Women, Denis Fortin

Faculty Publications

What I would like to offer in this paper is that a careful consideration of Ellen White’s thought on the role of women in the church, taken in its nineteenth-century context, her understanding of the mission of the Seventh-day Adventist church, her counsels regarding ministry and its many functions taken in historical context, and her non-sacramental understanding of ordination and early Seventh-day Adventist practice of ordination, can support the case for allowing the ordination of women today.

Women's Status And Ordination As Elders Or Bishops In The Early Church, Reformation, And Post-Reformation Eras, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Faculty Publications

This paper will investigate the views of the status of women in the church and whether women were ordained as elders, bishops, or priests in certain periods of the history of the Christian Church. The main focus of this paper will be on the Early Church, the Reformation, and Post-Reformation eras. The sources for the early church are limited to the early church fathers, and for the Reformers to their commentaries on the Bible. Martin Luther and John Calvin have been chosen because of their emphasis on the Bible as the rule for doctrine and practice, which was adopted by …

Dealing With Doctrinal Issues In The Church: Part 3, Richard M. Davidson, Paul S. Ratsara

Faculty Publications

The 1888 Minneapolis Bible conference exemplifies using wrong attitudes to deal with doctrinal controversy. In contrast to the 1888 debacle, the 1848 and the 1855 conferences exemplify right approaches toward dealing with controversial issues in the church. These illustrate the principle that the key toward dealing with controversial subjects in the church is a personal relationship with God.

Interview With Richard Blackaby: Reflections On Spiritual Leadership, Leadership, Stan Patterson

Faculty Publications

Dr. Richard Blackaby is the president of Blackaby Ministries International and has written or co-authored with his father 23 books, including Spiritual Leadership: Moving People on to God’s Agenda and Experiencing God. He and his wife, Lisa, make their home in Greenville, South Carolina. There has been so much—some would say too much—written on the subject of leadership during the last decade. Much of this work has influenced leadership behaviors and practices in the context of Christian organizations, but relatively little has emerged from the Christian context that has had the lasting impact of the book Spiritual Leadership: Moving People …

Phoebe: Was She An Early Church Leader?, Darius Jankiewicz Apr 2013

Phoebe: Was She An Early Church Leader?, Darius Jankiewicz

Faculty Publications

The role of Phoebe in early Christianity has been hotly debated throughout the centuries, ranging from views suggesting that her ministry was nothing more than that of a helper (or patron) of the apostolic task, to those ascribing to her a significant ministerial role. As we shall see, this debate often influenced the biblical translations of the Greek words used by Paul to describe the ministry of this remarkable woman. In this article, I will focus on three aspects of Phoebe’s ministry that flow from the text of Romans 16:1, 2: her ministry as a diakonos; her role …

Dealing With Doctrinal Issues In The Church: Part 2, Richard M. Davidson, Paul S. Ratsara

Faculty Publications

Acts 15 reveals that the church, inits assembly of representative members, may indeed speak with binding authority upon the whole church, as that authority is based upon the Written Word. This chapter also provides a paradigm for dealing with doctrinal controversy, a paradigm that the Seventh-day Adventist Church may well follow when facing controversial issues.

Dealing With Doctrinal Issues In The Church: Part 1, Richard M. Davidson, Paul S. Ratsara

This series of articles suggests some ground rules for dealing with a potentially divisive theological issue. We begin by looking at the history of doctrinal controversy, both at the beginning of the Christian church and the inception of the Adventist movement, and by learning from the first Christian disciples and from our Adventist pioneers.

Dealing With Doctrinal Issues In The Church: Proposal For Ground Rules, Paul S. Ratsara, Richard M. Davidson Jan 2013

Dealing With Doctrinal Issues In The Church: Proposal For Ground Rules, Paul S. Ratsara, Richard M. Davidson

Faculty Publications

We believe in the unity of the church. The church comprises of people from all walks of life and from various backgrounds. While the membership of the church culturally diverse we must preserve its unity under God’s leadership. Unity should not necessarily mean uniformity in the Seventh-day Adventist church. Rather it means oneness of faith, purpose, and practice in Jesus Christ.
