Hiding Behind The Mask Of Contradiction: A Study Of Mardi Gras And Race In New Orleans, Amy M. Jacobson Jan 2011

Hiding Behind The Mask Of Contradiction: A Study Of Mardi Gras And Race In New Orleans, Amy M. Jacobson

CMC Senior Theses

In my thesis, I examine the racial history of New Orleans, Louisiana, through the lens of Mardi Gras. After the introduction, I begin with the history of the celebration and its European origin, in chapter two. Then, I move onto the discovery of New Orleans. In chapter three I look at the 1811 slave rebellion in New Orleans, which was the largest in United States' history. In chapter four I explore race and Mardi Gras in the nineteenth century, and the same in chapter five, but in the twentieth century. In chapter six I look at the twenty-first century in …

"This Rough Magic:" Imagination, Resurrection, And The Dream World Crisis In Shakespearean Tragedy, Rachel A. Selvin Jan 2011

"This Rough Magic:" Imagination, Resurrection, And The Dream World Crisis In Shakespearean Tragedy, Rachel A. Selvin

CMC Senior Theses

In this thesis, I explored the relationship between Shakespearean tragedy and romance, specifically how each genre treated themes regarding resurrection and the imagination. In romance, I discovered that the imagination became a portal to reality--a way through which characters understood and accepted impermanence, decay, and death. I used romance to illuminate tragedy's failures, showing that in both King Lear and Othello the imagination acts as a mask against the real. I called these imaginative spaces “dream worlds”--fantastical plains in which characters chased their impossible longings for eternity and perfected romantic love. This refusal to engage with the real, I concluded, …

La Déformalisation De La Restauration, Trevor Felch Jan 2011

La Déformalisation De La Restauration, Trevor Felch

CMC Senior Theses

Free Will, Genuine Alternatives And Predictability, Laura Hagen Jan 2011

Free Will, Genuine Alternatives And Predictability, Laura Hagen

CMC Senior Theses

Through evaluating Hilary Bok’s argument from her essay Freedom and Practical Reason, I hope to shed light on the overall question of whether we can have free will if determinism is true. In the first two chapters I will fully explain and break down Bok’s argument for genuine epistemic alternatives. In chapter three I will evaluate the success of Bok’s arguments. Specifically, I will offer a variety of intuitive examples to show that epistemic unpredictability is not enough to make our alternatives genuine. I will then use more examples to consider the relative importance of unpredictability and endorsement to …

Theories Of Justice To Health Care, Jacob R. Tobis Jan 2011

Theories Of Justice To Health Care, Jacob R. Tobis

CMC Senior Theses

In this thesis, many topics will be discussed and a variety of philosophers will be mentioned. The main goal of this thesis is to determine a health care plan that fits with the theories of Robert Nozick, Arthur Ripstein, Norman Daniels, and Amartya Sen. I conclude that Ezekiel Emanuel’s health care plan, The Guaranteed Healthcare Access Plan, can be used as a compromise between the views of each of these philosophers. In reaching such a conclusion, I take many steps. I begin with the explanation of theories of justice and their focus. I then turn to the important distinction between …

Does An Academy Award Affect Stock Return?, Kelli M. Maltsbarger Jan 2011

Does An Academy Award Affect Stock Return?, Kelli M. Maltsbarger

CMC Senior Theses

This study examines the affect of winning an Academy Award on the stock price of parent companies. On average, receiving an Oscar has no significant impact on the stock of parent companies during the few days surrounding the broadcast of the Academy Awards. The findings of this study introduce questions of external interference and possible limitations on this type of research. However, my study sheds light on future topics of investigation for analyzing the effects of televised award shows on the stock market.

The Socio-Economic And Religious Aspects In Robinson Crusoe, Alexandra G. Macy Jan 2011

The Socio-Economic And Religious Aspects In Robinson Crusoe, Alexandra G. Macy

CMC Senior Theses

In the novel, Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe examines a wide range of complex issues. Defoe takes the typical adventure theme and transforms it into a thought-provoking reflection of many issues involving society. A blending of economic and religious issues is created by first focusing on economy, then bringing the issue of religion in, and finally allowing for the portrayal of the interpenetration between each. Defoe proves that it is possible to live by economic practices and monetary values while still maintaining a good, moral character. The emphasis on economic issues is extremely apparent, as Defoe calls into question the concept …

The Mexican Hydra: How Calderón's Pursuit Of Peace Led To The Bloodiest War In Mexican History? Will The Mexican People Inherit A Failed State In 2012?, Marco A. Pinon-Farah Jan 2011

THE MEXICAN HYDRA: HOW CALDERÓN’S PURSUIT OF PEACE LED TO THE BLOODIEST WAR IN MEXICAN HISTORY. WILL THE MEXICAN PEOPLE INHERIT A FAILED STATE IN 2012?

Abstract

Marco Antonio Pinon-Farah

The drug-war in Mexico (2006-present) has accelerated at a chilling rate, claiming the lives of 35,000 Mexican people. Since President Felipe Calderón assumed office, Mexico has been battling an internal beast unlike any it has known, the Mexican Hydra. Like the mythical creature, the Mexican cartels have proven capable of not only combating the government forces, but also of regenerating and strengthening themselves in the face of increasing government scrutiny …

The Value Of Youth In Major League Baseball, Jason Lee Jan 2011

The Value Of Youth In Major League Baseball, Jason Lee

CMC Senior Theses

In the fall of 2009, the New York Yankees claimed their 27th World Series title with a team that oozed capitalism and free markets. With over $200 million committed in its annual payroll, the Yankees capitalized on a strong free-agent class and some of the best known players in the game to generate their first World Series title since 2000. The feat was impressive, but the expectation in New York is always “championship or bust.” The following season, the Yankees fell in the American League Championship Series to the Texas Rangers who would go on to lose to the San …

Living Fairy Tales: Science Fiction And Fantasy's Visionary Retellings Of "Beauty And The Beast", Adrien E. Sebree Jan 2011

Living Fairy Tales: Science Fiction And Fantasy's Visionary Retellings Of "Beauty And The Beast", Adrien E. Sebree

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis explores how science fiction and fantasy retellings of the fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast" bring visionary insights to the fairy tale. Stories such as Tanith Lee's science fiction novella "Beauty" and Mercedes Lackey's fantasy novel The Fire Rose constitute living and developing incarnations of "Beauty and the Beast." To better explore the visionary leaps made by these stories, they are placed in contrast with one of the original recordings of the story by Madame Marie Le Prince de Beaumont and the 1991 Disney film version, Beauty and the Beast.

Reception Of Marxism In 20th Century Russia, Aleksandr Grabovskiy Jan 2011

Reception Of Marxism In 20th Century Russia, Aleksandr Grabovskiy

CMC Senior Theses

In my thesis I will study how the revolutionary philosophy of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels was received and interpreted by early 20th century Russian intellectuals in an attempt to reconcile orthodoxy with the real conditions present in Russia. Through analysis of documents spanning several decades of debate, I will trace the evolution of this discussion to unlock the logic that led to philosophy put to action in the form of revolution. Finally, I will evaluate how this logic fits into the historic trajectory described by Marxism.

Transforming The Religious Paradigm: A Study Of Female Opportunism And Empowerment Through Latin American Evangelicalism, Melissa Irvine Jan 2011

Transforming The Religious Paradigm: A Study Of Female Opportunism And Empowerment Through Latin American Evangelicalism, Melissa Irvine

CMC Senior Theses

From a contemporary international perspective, there are two truly global religious movements of enormous vitality. One is a resurgent Islam, the other Pentecostal Protestantism. What makes the growth of Pentecostal Protestantism so fascinating is the fact that it’s transforming a region where the Catholic Church has for five centuries reigned supreme in its religious monopoly. While the first century of proselytizing in Latin America was relatively minute (constituting only 1 percent of the overall population in 1950), Pentecostalism began to show signs of its potential vitality in the 1960s and 1970s.2 Evangelical conversion became more pervasive in 1980s, and by …

The Weight Of Words: Discourse, Power And The 19th Century Prostitute, Yoshan A. Kennedy-Churnac Jan 2011

The Weight Of Words: Discourse, Power And The 19th Century Prostitute, Yoshan A. Kennedy-Churnac

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis discusses discourses surrounding the urban prostitute in mid-nineteenth century Paris and London. During the nineteenth century, sexuality became a topic of increasing concern and an outpouring of literature on deviant sexuality and ways to regulate it appeared from moral commentators, social scientists, and physicians. Different historical moments saw the prevalence of different approaches taken, whether it was through the moral counsel of religious pamphlets, or through the methodological approach implemented by medical journals and social surveys. My study will trace the evolution of sexual discourses on prostitutes as well as how their authors influenced attempts to regulate these …

Fear And Loathing In Los Angeles: Industrial Decentralization And The Rise And Fall Of L.A.'S Periphery, Alexander Bargmann Jan 2011

Fear And Loathing In Los Angeles: Industrial Decentralization And The Rise And Fall Of L.A.'S Periphery, Alexander Bargmann

CMC Senior Theses

During the 1920s, Los Angeles Boosters, fearing the congestion of East coast cities, developed ideas about urban growth that emphasized industrial decentralization and urban dispersal. Before, during, and after WWII, these fears intertwined with the rise of defense related industries, particularly aviation and steel. As the city continued to grow, becoming a regional metropolis, these defense related industries, long present in Los Angeles, were brought into peripheral hubs by local boosters looking to develop places like Palmdale and Fontana. These cities grew and became, as important manufacturing and defense centers, part of the larger regional economy. These forces and boosters were …

Community In Exile: German Jewish Identity Development In Wartime Shanghai, 1938-1945, Alice I. Reichman Jan 2011

Community In Exile: German Jewish Identity Development In Wartime Shanghai, 1938-1945, Alice I. Reichman

CMC Senior Theses

Between 1938 and 1940 approximately 18,000 Jews from Central Europe went to the Chinese city of Shanghai to escape Nazi persecution. While almost every nation in the world refused to accept these desperate refugees, thousands found refuge in Japanese occupied Shanghai, which was an open port and one could immigrate there with no visa or passport. In an incredibly short period of time the refugees were able to develop a vibrant Jewish community. Relying primarily on the testimony of former refugees, this thesis seeks to address three main questions: What did exile in Shanghai feel like for the refugees? How …

Does The Mind Extend Out Into The World, Andrew D. Kishino Jan 2011

Does The Mind Extend Out Into The World, Andrew D. Kishino

CMC Senior Theses

The extended mind debate juggles the possibilities of whether or not the mind extends out into the world. Today, with the rise in technology, we have an additional claim that our tools are responsible for extending our minds. The internet, smart phones, and other tools give us a foothold in the extended mind debate by providing real world examples of how our mind is perceived as extending out into the world. In discovering where the divide between mind and environment exists we can come up with a conclusion whether or not the mind truly extends out into the world.

Siegfried Sassoon And Rebecca West: A Dual-Commentary On The English Home Front In World War I, Joseph Farewell Jan 2011

Siegfried Sassoon And Rebecca West: A Dual-Commentary On The English Home Front In World War I, Joseph Farewell

CMC Senior Theses

The glory of war is dead, and the Great War killed it. Soldierly dignity, heroism, and proper field chivalry; all laid to waste by a single mortar round at Arras. This ethos—a vestige of Greek warrior worship—stood little chance against the trenches. It either drowned in the fecal trench muck at the Somme or staggered back—in tatters, if that—a broken soul; another victim of the so-called “Good Fight.” And there were many victims. An entire generation, even, lost to the trenches. But that’s not even the worst part. The worst part is that home front in England didn’t even get …

All Country Roads Lead To Rome: Idealization Of The Countryside In Augustan Poetry And American Country Music, Alice Lyons Jan 2011

All Country Roads Lead To Rome: Idealization Of The Countryside In Augustan Poetry And American Country Music, Alice Lyons

CMC Senior Theses

This paper examines similarities between imagery of the countryside and the “country life” in both the poetry of Augustan Rome and contemporary American country music. It analyzes the themes of agriculture, poverty, family, and piety, and how they are used in both sets of sources to create an idealized countryside. This ideal, when contrasted with negative portrayals of urban life and non-idealized rural life, endorses an ideology that is opposed to wealth and that emphasizes the security and stability of the idyllic countryside. This ideology common to both may stem from the historical contexts of these two eras, revealing that …

The Human Color: Rooting Black Ideology In Human Rights, A Historical Analysis Of A Political Identity, Milan Reed Jan 2011

The Human Color: Rooting Black Ideology In Human Rights, A Historical Analysis Of A Political Identity, Milan Reed

CMC Senior Theses

In the 20th century the relationship between African-Americans and Africa grew into a prominent subject in the lives and perspectives of people who claim African
heritage because almost every facet of American life distinguished people based on skin color. The prevailing discourse of the day said that the way a person looked was deeply to who they were.1 People with dark skin were associated with Africa, and the notion of this connection has survived to this day. Scholars such as Molefi Kete Asante point to cultural retentions as evidence of the enduring connection between African-Americans and Africa, while any person …

The Trials Of A Comfort Woman, Erica Park Jan 2011

The Trials Of A Comfort Woman, Erica Park

CMC Senior Theses

The trials of a comfort woman was never revealed after the conclusion of WWII. More than half a century has passed before the name was uttered on the international stage. Why the sudden break of silence? What is the response of the Japanese government. In this paper, we discuss the issue of the comfort women and the the political implications it holds on Japan. Japan's failure to accept wartime reparation, largely due to Allied intervention, has resulted in the widening gap between Japan and Asia. This paper focuses on the combination of increased US influence as a result of the …

Bolshevik For Capitalism: Ayn Rand & Soviet Socialist Realism, Peter Jebsen Jan 2011

Bolshevik For Capitalism: Ayn Rand & Soviet Socialist Realism, Peter Jebsen

CMC Senior Theses

Since the late 1950s, Russian-American novelist and philosopher Ayn Rand has been “the ultimate gateway drug to life on the right.” Her philosophy – “Objectivism” – combined militant atheism, libertarian natural rights, and a philosophical commitment to what she called “the virtue of selfishness,” and earned her the admiration of such luminaries as Alan Greenspan: a remarkable achievement for an immigrant woman who learned to speak English in her late 20s. What is less-often observed is that Rand’s work, especially her mature novels The Fountainhead (1943) and Atlas Shrugged (1957), bear a close stylistic resemblance to the Soviet Socialist Realist …

Translating The Language Of Film: East Asian Films And Their Hollywood Remakes, Julia Yu Jan 2011

Translating The Language Of Film: East Asian Films And Their Hollywood Remakes, Julia Yu

CMC Senior Theses

Hollywood remakes of East Asian films clearly change more than just the language of a film, and the choices that producers and directors make in order to tailor a foreign film so that it better appeals to American audiences creates an entry point that allows for a more direct comparison of aesthetic styles, cultural tastes, and narrative conventions. An analysis of two case studies, South Korean hit film My Sassy GIrl (2001) and Hong Kong's Infernal Affairs trilogy (2002, 2003, 2003) remade into My Sassy Girl (2008) and The Departed (2006), explores the principles of Korean and Hong Kong commercial …

An Inquiry Into The Moral Significance Of Doxastic And Epistemic States: Examining The Circumstantial Element Of Moral Obligation, Gregory William Keenan Jan 2011

An Inquiry Into The Moral Significance Of Doxastic And Epistemic States: Examining The Circumstantial Element Of Moral Obligation, Gregory William Keenan

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis explores the moral significance of agent beliefs and epistemic states. In particular it will explore the following question: is an agent's moral obligation a function of her actual circumstances, what she believes those circumstances to be, or what her evidence indicates those circumstances are? Three corresponding views are explored and it is argued that each of these views is subject to one of two substantial worries, which are developed in this thesis (i.e. the manipulation worry and the unreasonableness worry).

Estimating The Effects Of Integrated Film Production On Box-Office Performance: Do Inhouse Effects Influence Studio Moguls?, Daniel M. Polyakov Jan 2011

Estimating The Effects Of Integrated Film Production On Box-Office Performance: Do Inhouse Effects Influence Studio Moguls?, Daniel M. Polyakov

CMC Senior Theses

Each year well over one billion movie tickets are sold to an audience who knows very little about what they are getting themselves into. Why is it that despite the uncertainty, people return to the theaters to see what Hollywood has in store for them? In efforts to provide answers regarding the driving forces behind Hollywood’s blockbuster hits, this study takes into account the integration levels of the studios. Specifically, does a movie produced in-house at a large studio have a better chance of being a blockbuster hit than one which is outsourced to an independent production company? Further, I …

A Theory Of Mental Credit, Jason Soll Jan 2011

A Theory Of Mental Credit, Jason Soll

CMC Senior Theses

Many philosophical subjects attempt to analyze the basis of human welfare. Theories of desert, distribution of property, and happiness tend to dominate philosophical discourse. Mental credit, which is the mental acquisition of credit for one’s accomplishments and the satisfaction one derives from this credit, is absent from this discourse despite its underlying role in the way people think about their lives. Mental credit is an eternal cognitive good that deserves thoughtful attention and pious decisions for implementation. The following theory of mental credit seeks to serve as a unifying theory for the mental calculations that guide life’s most imperative decisions, …
