Musical Forms In The Chrisitian Church From Apostolic Times To The Gregorian Age, M Alfred Bichsel Jul 1937

Musical Forms In The Chrisitian Church From Apostolic Times To The Gregorian Age, M Alfred Bichsel

Bachelor of Divinity

Modern ecclesiastical as well as secular music has as its humble but important basis the music of the early Christian era traced through the Middle Ages. Throughout this time there are two influences which have guided the development of music in general. The one is the folk song - the music of the people which was sung by the wandering minstrels. The other is the music of the church itself which was assembled and written by the clergy, for the most part by monks. However it is the latter that bears more weight and significance, for it was the church …

The Messianic Sedes In Genesis, Ludwig Helmstetter May 1937

The Messianic Sedes In Genesis, Ludwig Helmstetter

Bachelor of Divinity

The scope of this thesis is a study of the Messianic content of the Book of Genesis. It is not the purpose merely to restate traditional orthodox interpretations of the passages in question and to refute differing interpretations; nor is any attempt made to present new points of interpretation. The approach is fundamentally that of the Bible student whose purpose is to see what the text says and what Holy Scripture says about it.

The Concept Of God's Holiness According To The Old Testament, Victor Schulze Apr 1937

The Concept Of God's Holiness According To The Old Testament, Victor Schulze

Bachelor of Divinity

For all practical purposes there are but two ways or thinking about God. The one is based upon Divine revelation, the other spun from the speculations of men. Unprejudiced thinkers may find God's creative activity revealed in the works of nature, His righteousness in the moral law engraved into the heart of every mortal. And, finally, God is revealed in Scripture as possessing both personality and attributes.

The Missionary Method Of Paul As Demonstrated In The Book Of Acts, William Graumann Apr 1937

The Missionary Method Of Paul As Demonstrated In The Book Of Acts, William Graumann

Bachelor of Divinity

This topic will be discussed under a survey of the passages in the Book of Acts, showing the direct reference to methods where that is possible, and pointing out the implications where the methods are not directly stated. In connection with this we wish to make applications to our own missionary methods, which we feel should not only increase our zeal for missions, but should enable us to bring the Gospel in a more effective way to more souls.

The Sola Scriptura With Special Reference To The Denial By The Methodist, Quakers, And Swedenborgians, Harold Merklinger Apr 1937

The Sola Scriptura With Special Reference To The Denial By The Methodist, Quakers, And Swedenborgians, Harold Merklinger

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper is once more to establish the doctrine of the Sola Scriptura, to prove that Holy Scripture alone and nothing else can be made the basis of Christian doctrine and practice. Then it will be shown how three of the eighteenth century enthusiastic bodies-the Methodists, Quakers, and Swedenborgians--deviate from this doctrine.

A Critical Analysis Of The Principal Sermon Methods In The Lutheran Church, Adolph Meyer Apr 1937

A Critical Analysis Of The Principal Sermon Methods In The Lutheran Church, Adolph Meyer

Bachelor of Divinity

It goes without saying of course, that there can be no good preaching without the aid of God's Holy Spirit. At the same time we must admit that human frailties in the preacher may hinder the work of' the Spirit, and it is in the sense or overcoming such human shortcomings that we speak of "securing good preaching" and "making good sermons." The three requisites for good sermonizing are: a thorough study of' the text, a good outline, and good delivery; neglecting any one of these will result in poor preaching," Dean Fritz. In our present discussion we will confine …

Die Selbstbezeichnung Jesu Der Menschensehn, Werner Wadewitz Apr 1937

Die Selbstbezeichnung Jesu Der Menschensehn, Werner Wadewitz

Bachelor of Divinity

Alleged Anachronisms In The Pentateuch, Eugene Bertermann Apr 1937

Alleged Anachronisms In The Pentateuch, Eugene Bertermann

Bachelor of Divinity

The history of Pentateuchal criticism shows that the importance of the postmosaica has long been widely recognized. On these alone Rabbi Aben Ezra based his doubts of the integrity of the Pentateuch. In the seventeenth century Peyrerius, Spinoza, and Hobbes again advanced only the postmosnica in their attacks on the Pentateuch, although we suspect that they were motivated ultimately by more sinister motives than a desire to find out the truth in these passages of Moses. Clericus goes a step farther and acknowledges the validity of two arguments against the Pentateuch, that of style, as well as the anachronisms. But …

The Servant Of The Lord In Isaiah Fifity-Three, John Paul Uhlig Apr 1937

The Servant Of The Lord In Isaiah Fifity-Three, John Paul Uhlig

Bachelor of Divinity

Who is meant in chapter fifty-three? Critics have split into many camps. Some hold that Isaiah is speaking of all Israel; some, that he designates only the pious in Israel; while certain ones hold that the prophet is speaking of some individual. The Christian Church has, however, from the very beginning held that Isaiah is speaking of the Messiah. And that this is the true interpretation is pointed out at length in the following chapters. In one section of sixteen verses the evangelist of the Old Testament points a picture of the work of Christ. His humiliation is stressed as …

The Progressive Self-Culture Of A Lutheran Pastor, John Weidenschilling Jan 1937

The Progressive Self-Culture Of A Lutheran Pastor, John Weidenschilling

Bachelor of Divinity

During his three years at the seminary the theological student is taught the qualifications and requirements of a Lutheran pastor, and he is informed of the tremendous responsibilities and the exacting demands which a call into the ministry will lay upon him when he has become a pastor of a congregation. But the seminary training is not able to convert the student into a full-fledged pastor. Only long years of hard study and practical experience and divine grace can equip a man successfully and completely for this greatest and hardest calling and work in this world. Unless the ministerial candidate, …
