Swinburne, Tennyson, And Matters Funereal, Terry L. Meyers
Swinburne, Tennyson, And Matters Funereal, Terry L. Meyers
Arts & Sciences Articles
Excerpt from the article: "This year, 2009, is of course the centenary of the death of Algernon Charles Swinburne, that bad boy of Victorian poetry, that extraordinary writer who outraged so many of his contemporary readers—and later readers too, I might add—with his strongly anti-theistic poetry, with his radical republicanism in a monarchical culture, and with his melodic and entrancing siren song of sexually outrageous poetry. This evening I’d like to talk about Swinburne’s funeral in April 1909 on the Isle of Wight, an event that closed his life with the kind of public controversy that I think he might …

This article describes an unconventional method of teaching Greek vocabulary, grammar, and syntax through the translation or adaptation of popular songs into Attic Greek. To reinforce vocabulary and introduce or review points of grammar of syntax in a memorable way, I have adapted and translated a number of modern songs into Attic Greek. Each song was focused around one or two significant concepts (e.g., adverbs, participles, the optative mood) and was presented with the appropriate textbook chapter to augment other available materials. The students themselves, who recommended many of the songs and themes, were consequently active participants in the development …

Providential Design: American Negroes And Garveyism In South Africa, Robert T. Vinson
Arts & Sciences Book Chapters
Transcending geographic and cultural lines, From Toussaint to Tupac is an ambitious collection of essays exploring black internationalism and its implications for a black consciousness. At its core, black internationalism is a struggle against oppression, whether manifested in slavery, colonialism, or racism. The ten essays in this volume offer a comprehensive overview of the global movements that define black internationalism, from its origins in the colonial period to the present. From Toussaint to Tupac focuses on three moments in global black history: the American and Haitian revolutions, the Garvey movement and the Communist International following World War I, and the …

American Studies, Cultural History, And The Critique Of Culture, Richard S. Lowry
American Studies, Cultural History, And The Critique Of Culture, Richard S. Lowry
Arts & Sciences Articles
For several decades historians have expressed reservations about how scholars of American studies have embraced theory and its jargons. The program for a recent American studies convention seems to confirm the field’s turn from history and its embrace of the paradigms and practices of cultural studies. The nature of this gap is complicated by comparing scholarly work published since 2000 on the Gilded Age and Progressive Era in the respective flagship journals of each field. Scholars in both fields are committed to the study of culture, but they differ in how they understand historical agency and subjectivity. A historical overview …

Talk At The Swinburne Centenary Conference, London, Terry L. Meyers
Arts & Sciences Articles
Excerpt from the article: "My own contribution today to the development of Swinburne’s reputation will be slight, in large part because I’ll be talking about Swinburne’s life and letters—his recognition will have to be based on the just appreciation of his work, which is a job for the critics among you. But when Catherine Maxwell invited me to speak, she more or less gave me my marching orders in saying that the audience today would like to hear from me about “some aspect of your Correspondence project – maybe significant new perspectives/material on ACS that emerged during your researches.” That …

Historical Perspectives Of The African Burial Ground New York Blacks And The Diaspora, Edna G. Medford
Historical Perspectives Of The African Burial Ground New York Blacks And The Diaspora, Edna G. Medford
Arts & Sciences Books
The unearthing of the colonial cemetery known historically as the “Negroes Burying Ground” in Lower Manhattan in 1991 has given both scholars and the general public the opportunity to study and comprehend the broad dimensions of the African American experience. The African Burial Ground and the human remains contained within it provide a unique vantage point from which to view New York City’s Africans and their descendants over two centuries. As the final resting place for thousands of enslaved and free black people who lived and labored in the city from roughly 1627 until the end of the eighteenth century, …

The Skeletal Biology Of The New York African Burial Ground (Pt. 1), Michael L. Blakey, Lesley M. Rankin-Hill
Arts & Sciences Books
The New York African Burial Ground was “rediscovered” in 1989 in the process of preparation for the construction of a proposed 34-story federal office building by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) at 290 Broadway in New York City (Ingle et al. 1990). The site for the proposed building was once part of the African Burial Ground that extended “from Chambers Street on the south to Duane Street on the north and from Centre Street on the east to Broadway on the west” (Yamin 2000:vii). A fullscale archaeological excavation was conducted by Historic Conservation and Interpretation (HCI) and John Milner …

This volume is one of three disciplinary volumes on the New York African Burial Ground Project. One volume focuses on the skeletal biological analysis of the remains recovered from the site (see Volume 1 of this series, Skeletal Biology of the New York African Burial Ground [Blakey and Rankin-Hill 2009a]). Another focuses on the documentary history, from a diasporic perspective, of Africans who lived and died in early New York (see Volume 3 of this series, Historical Perspectives of the African Burial Ground: New York Blacks and the Diaspora [Medford 2009]). The present volume, consisting of three parts, presents the …

The Power Of African American Parent Perceptions On Student Achievement, Melody Luretha Camm
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
With the implementation of No Child Left Behind, schools have been challenged to maintain Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) for low achieving subpopulations. Current research supported by historical data suggests that African American parent involvement could possibly be the missing link to African American student achievement. This study explores the possible connection between African American parent perceptions of their school involvement and student achievement. It surveyed 738 fourth grade parents from five Title I and five Non-Title I schools to see if there was a significant difference between the parent involvement perceptions of African American Parents and Non-African American Parents, as …
