Black Male Counselors’ Experiences Navigating Client-Initiated Microaggressions In Cross-Cultural Therapeutic Dyads, Crystal Smith
Black Male Counselors’ Experiences Navigating Client-Initiated Microaggressions In Cross-Cultural Therapeutic Dyads, Crystal Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Black male counselors working in the United States often face a unique set of challenges as the history of racism, discrimination, and prejudice that has plagued the United States also occurs in therapeutic spaces. Recent research has brought awareness to the existence of client-initiated microaggressions in therapy, but training on how to adequately address those microaggressions is lacking. Black male counselors have reported issues with knowing how to protect their own needs and maintaining a positive therapeutic relationship with their clients while addressing these microaggressions as they are required to hold space for their clients despite any emotional distress or …

Intersecting Identities And Adjustment To The Primary-Secondary School Transition: An Integrative Review, Joanne Harris, Rebecca Nowland, Megan Todd
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
The primary-to-secondary school transition is a milestone for children because of the multiple changes they must navigate. Although most adjust successfully, approximately 30% of children have difficulties during this transition. Intersecting identities are also likely to influence how children navigate the adjustment of the school transfer, but there have been no syntheses of existing evidence relating to the impacts of intersectionality. We conducted an integrative review using eight databases (Education database, ERIC, ProQuest Education, PsychInfo, Scopus, SocIndex, Sociology Database, and Web of Science) and searched for quantitative or qualitative studies that examined how intersecting identities impact children’s self-concept, mental health, …

Characteristics Of Trust Between African Americans And Health Care Providers, Carol C. Griffiths
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African Americans (AA) are one of the groups disproportionally affected by health care disparities. Despite years of research and government funding, the health of AA continues to decline, and a variety of factors intermingle to produce this effect. Furthermore, trust has been identified as contributing to poor health outcomes in AA. There is a gap in the literature about the lack of trust between AA and health care providers (HCPs), and information about how AA define, perceive, and experience trust in interactions with health care providers and the health care system is lacking. The purpose of this qualitative study was …
Experiences Of Female African American Educators When Seeking Leadership Positions, Shawania Marshall
Experiences Of Female African American Educators When Seeking Leadership Positions, Shawania Marshall
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Disproportionality and lack of representation of African American females in educational leadership roles constitute a significant issue. The present study focused on exploring the experiences of female African American educators when seeking leadership positions in elementary and secondary education. The purpose of this study was to bring more awareness to this issue. Providing insight into the lived experiences of eight female African American educational leaders may create more equitable hiring policies and practices. Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Intersectionality served as the theoretical frameworks. The research questions addressed (a) how elementary and secondary female African American educators described their experiences …
