Esta investigación cualitativa explora las prácticas y percepciones de dos maestras (K-1), así como los asuntos de equidad implícitos en la integración curricular de problemas de matemáticas contextualizados para adecuar la enseñanza de estudiantes latinos que están aprendiendo inglés como segunda lengua. Propaganda models recommend the use of familiar media, such as existing local or national newspapers and magazines, because target audiences are inclined to trust them more than newly established and untried publications. It is assumed that if the media cannot be used or needed to be supplemented with a more directly controlled and plentiful message, then the propagandist could not do any better than to replicate their formats. "Oh, Those Loud Black Girls!": A Phenomenological Study Of Black Girls Talking With An Attitude, Jacqueline B. Koonce

Current research suggests that it is imperative for researchers and educators to pay more attention to the needs of African American adolescent girls and how their race and gender affect schooling (Fordham, 1993; Morris, 2007). The purpose of this study was to highlight the lived experiences of two African American adolescent girls when they used the African American women's speech practice, "Talking with an Attitude" (TWA), with their teachers. Using phenomenology and Afrocentric feminist epistemology as methodological and theoretical approaches, interviews were used to collect and analyze data that revealed the nature of their lived experiences. Oxford French Literature Professor Frédérique Aït-Touati’s book Fictions of the Cosmos: Science and Literature in the Seventeenth Century is packed full of information—perhaps too packed with information—about all sorts of interesting subjects relating to the interplay of science and literature in the seventeenth century. The book explores literary aspects of science writing, the history of astronomy and optics, and the history of the relationship between fiction and knowledge, especially in the early modern period. Her overall aim in this exploration is to instruct us on the value of fiction in science and the value of science in fiction. To accomplish …

The Cyprus Crisis And The Southern Flank Of Nato (1960-1975), Tamer Balci

Independence of Cyprus in 1960 ended neither the Greek demand to annex the island to Greece, nor the Turkish demand to divide the island along the ethnic lines. This paper analyzes the policies of major actors on the Cyprus problem in its crucial years from 1960 to 1975. An overall examination of the British, Turkish, Greek, American and the Soviet policies on Cyprus along with the policies of the Turkish and Greek Cypriots in this period reveals that all sides except Greece developed alternative policies and proposals to solve the problem. Mentor Texts And Funds Of Knowledge: Situating Writing Within Our Students’ Worlds, Beatrice Mendez Newman

The funds of knowledge concept serves as scaffolding for encouraging students to draw on background experiences and home language to generate authentic writing. This article describes and illustrates several classroom strategies, including 1) using culturally relevant mentor texts; 2) applying Nancie Atwell’s writing territories concept; 3) adapting Harry Noden’s Image Grammar; and 4) introducing cubing as a discovery strategy.

That particular sounds are characteristic of different languages is widely understood. For example, studies of Amerindian languages of the Amazon basin have discovered sounds as unique as a ―voiced, lateralized apical-alveolar/sublaminal-labial double flap with egressive lung air‖ [L,], exhibited only in Pirahã, an isolated language spoken by approximately one hundred people (Everett 92). English has an apparent proclivity for the phoneme /ʃ /, which, as Baugh and Cable point out, may be produced by twelve different spellings (14). This paper argues that the phoneme /ʧ /, represented exclusively in Spanish by the digraph ch, may be viewed as one of …
