Efforts ro free slaves in the Unites States legally took two paths--manumission ofspecific slaces by individual masters and emancipation of all slaves by legislative or constitutional act. During the Civil War, all slaves in belligerent states received their freedom through emancipation. Prior to that time, in spite of agitation by Abolitionists and other groups, attempts of general emancipation failed in the South.
