The 19th century produced numerous intellectual currents which were expressions of an incompatibility with the modern age. In reaction to the emergence of a now, urban, petty bourgeois world the 19th century intellectual of ten assumed the role of a prophet, warning of the decadent course of history while portraying an ideal form of existence which could eventually be achieved. One manifestation of this expression of dissent was Romanticism, and especially German Romanticism.
