Immigrants In Richmond After The Civil War : 1865-1880, Rudolph H. Bunzl

Richmond's foreign-born inhabitants in 1860 represented about twenty percent of the white population. The Irish and German communities were particularly influential. This thesis examines whether immigration resumed after the Civil War, where immigrants came from, and what role they played in the community. Research included examination of naturalization and census records, church records, newspapers of the period, records of German organizations, and the records of the Virginia legislature. The conclusions are: Immigration resumed on a very small scale. Government efforts to attract more immigrants were unsuccessful. The South Side Rail Road, chartered in 1846, was the fourth railroad to serve the city of Petersburg, Virginia, and, upon its completion in 1854, was the only direct rail link the city had through the Virginia Piedmont to Lynchburg and points west. The railroad was a major conveyor of trade through the Southside region of Virginia and served as an engine of economic development for the area. The Canton Commune is a detailed study of the Communist-led insurrection that occurred in the city of Canton in southern China on December 11-13, 1927, and its fate as history. Attention is paid in the thesis to the Commune's significant presence in the discourse of the Stalin-Trotsky power struggle of the late 1920s. The primary emphasis, however, is on the Commune's inability to become part of the revolutionary mythology of the People's Republic of China or international communism. This study examines the social changes that took place in Southern Rhodesia after the arrival of the British South Africa Company in the 1890s. Summer’s work focuses on interactions among settlers, the officials of the British South America Company and the administration, missionaries, humanitarian groups in Britain, and the most vocal or noticeable groups of Africans. This thesis analyzes the reasons for the failure of the Suvla Bay landings of August 1915 during the Gallipoli Campaign of the Great War. These included an inefficient chain of command, and a lack of initiative amongst subordinate generals that allowed the waste of precious time. Over-cautiousness hampered the operations that followed the landings. This characterized the 9th Army Corps from its aging commander, General Stopford, down through to many of its brigadiers, and the innate gentility of General Hamilton, Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, made it difficult for him to assert himself. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Germany launched a devastating submarine campaign against the merchant marine traffic along the eastern seaboard of America. The antisubmarine defenses mounted by the United States were insufficient in the first months of 1942. This thesis examines how the United States Navy, in cooperation with the Army and the Coast Guard, began antisubmarine operations to protect the Chesapeake Bay and the surrounding area from the menace of Germany's U-boats during the first year of America's participation in World War II.

The English translation of Foucault's unpublished French manuscript addressing Kant's statement on enlightenment appeared in 1984, 200 years after the publication of Kant's essay. Foucault meant to entitle his essay as Kant did, but instead he gave it the interested and partially correspondent title What is Enlightenment? This is only a partial correspondence, because the full title of Kant's essay is Beantwortung der Frage: Was ist Aufklärung? Foucault's title suppresses the fact that Kant's essay is not framed as a question, but as a definitive answer. This is present in the perfectiveness of the initial substantive; it is not an …
