Autonomous Underwater Vehicles As Tools For Deep-Submergence Archaeology, Christopher N. Roman, Ian Roderick Mather

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Marine archaeology beyond the capabilities of scuba divers is a technologically enabled field. The tool suite includes ship-based systems such as towed side-scan sonars and remotely operated vehicles, and more recently free-swimming autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Each of these platforms has various imaging and mapping capabilities appropriate for specific scales and tasks. Broadly speaking, AUVs are becoming effective tools for locating, identifying, and surveying archaeological sites. This paper discusses the role of AUVs in this suite of tools, outlines some specific design criteria necessary to maximize their utility in the field, and presents directions for future developments. Results are presented …

Reinterpreting Ancient Egypt Through Modern Dress, Sarah Bolton May 2010

Reinterpreting Ancient Egypt Through Modern Dress, Sarah Bolton

Senior Honors Projects

I have had a fascination for Ancient Egypt since I was in middle school. Until this project I was unable to melt meld together my two passions together: fashion design and Egypt. For this project I wanted to develop my own fashion line based upon analysis of ancient Egyptian tomb art.

In the Textiles, Merchandising, and Fashion Design department I have taken a variety of courses that have only increased my knowledge and excitement for this project. I have taken courses involving fashion illustration, basic sewing and even pattern making/developmentengineering. This project allowed me to combine all these elementsskills together. …

Advanced Studies In The Graphic Novel, Thomas Barkman May 2010

Advanced Studies In The Graphic Novel, Thomas Barkman

Senior Honors Projects

Advanced Studies in the Graphic Novel entails a practical intimacy with the form. My work serves to elucidate only some of the many differences between the graphic novel and traditional literature, to complicate the use of written language in the form as it relates to images, to address confrontations with publishing, and to share intimately the process and mechanisms by which my effort functions.

The paper will reveal the guts of the effort (itself a graphic novel) and in doing so will highlight issues as they uniquely relate to the form, and hopefully encourage others to attempt such work. The …

Ballroom Dance Choreography, Jennifer Paquette May 2010

Ballroom Dance Choreography, Jennifer Paquette

Senior Honors Projects

I cannot remember a time in my life when I wasn’t dancing. Since I was four, I’ve experimented with different styles, including ballet, tap, modern, and theater. Dancing to me has always been an art and a form of self-expression. In college, I started dancing Ballroom and Latin and fell in love with dancing all over again. For my Honors project, my goal was to try something that I hadn’t done before. I chose to create dances, to choreograph and perform ballroom dances with my peers.

The process of bringing dances to the stage started with doing selection and talking …

The Postsecret Phenomenon: A Contemporary Application Of Existential Psychotherapy, Dan Martin May 2010

The Postsecret Phenomenon: A Contemporary Application Of Existential Psychotherapy, Dan Martin

Senior Honors Projects

In November 2004, as a whimsical break from his monotonous job, Frank Warren decided he would start a small art project in his community. This idea, which he entitled “PostSecret,” involved leaving blank post cards in various public locations that simply asked to “Share a Secret” and listed a few guidelines. Frank’s goal was to “create this non-judgmental, safe place where people could feel comfortable sharing parts of their lives that they've never told a soul.” What he expected to be a small result became a weekly blog, five published books, a traveling art gallery, and a lecture series given …

Writing, Illustrating, And Publishing A Children’S Book, Sarah Payne

Senior Honors Projects

My book is entitled Delilah Discovers Degas, about a girl named Delilah who is very passionate about ballet dancing. When Delilah discovers the impressionist painter, Degas, his paintings serve to fuel her imagination as she goes about her daily activities before ballet class. The paintings of adult ballerinas, which I’ve incorporated into the book, represent her dream of one day becoming a professional ballerina. My target audience is 4-6 year old children.

I am studying both English and Writing and Rhetoric at the University of Rhode Island. My academic efforts culminated in creating a children’s book as my senior honors …

Art In Our Surroundings: An Exploration In Recycled Art Influenced By The Environment, Armine Tahmassian May 2010

Art In Our Surroundings: An Exploration In Recycled Art Influenced By The Environment, Armine Tahmassian

Senior Honors Projects

The Environment: it is what surrounds us, what we breathe, what we walk on, yet we do not pay much attention to it. Over the centuries, from the start of agriculture and civilization, humankind has been making its mark on the earth. Not always aware of our impact on the planet, we have bit by bit altered the land, water, and atmosphere. This alteration has created pressing issues that only seem to be getting worse with time. I think it is very important to continue informing the public about the significance of these current issues through any mode of awareness. …
