"Why Can't The English" . . . Learn To Get Along?: Musical Reinforcement Of Negative Personal Characteristics In My Fair Lady, Gretchen Hundling Jan 1998

"Why Can't The English" . . . Learn To Get Along?: Musical Reinforcement Of Negative Personal Characteristics In My Fair Lady, Gretchen Hundling

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Although the matter of adaptation is a delicate one, a majority of Shaw's original work is retained in My Fair Lady--over half of the show is the original Pygmalion script (Lerner Street 23). With the exception of the altered ending, almost all of Shaw's poke at English society is intact. But in this case, the songs of the musical serve an even greater function than just relaying what is on the characters' minds when the orchestra starts to play. The characters of this show are sometimes lovable, yet often detestable, for a great deal of their negative issues and …

Missionary Activities Of American Mormons, Peter Masteller Jan 1998

Missionary Activities Of American Mormons, Peter Masteller

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

I achieved three important insights into the Mormon faith through my observations. First, I learned that Mormonism is a Christian faith. It is sometimes thought of as a fringe religious movement somehow outside the boundaries of Christianity, but in my observations I learned that it is centered on God and on the saving power of Jesus Christ. Through the process of writing this paper I might have learned how this misconception is perpetuated. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has so many characteristics which are distinctly and uniquely Mormon that these differences are emphasized to the extent that …

During an uninterrupted period from about 1910 through 1913, Blanche Ames Ames (1878-1969), an American artist and women's suffragist, worked closely with her brother, Adelbert Ames 11 (1880-1955), a lawyer, artist and optical physiologist, in a study of color, perspective and other aspects of pictorial art in the hope of using scientific findings to enhance the realism of their paintings. They made significant progress, but their close relationship ended in 1922 as a result of a disagreement about their joint authorship of a published paper.

Creating A Textual Performance Piece, Karen Pitcher Jan 1998

Creating A Textual Performance Piece, Karen Pitcher

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

When posed with the challenge of creating a senior thesis project, I was boggled as to what to do. As an English major, I knew my options were very open, and I was determined to make this project one that I would enjoy throughout my senior year. In order to do so, I had to broaden my scope to include not only an element of my major, but also components of my communications minor and my first major, theatre. In order to do this, I turned to oral interpretation, an activity that involves dramatic interpretation of texts written by others. …

Solving The Problem Of Evil, Matt Perman Jan 1998

Solving The Problem Of Evil, Matt Perman

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

We are all aware of the great amount of tragedy in the world. Natural disasters have brought massive devastation on entire communities. Death and illness have brought grief and suffering upon every family at some point in time. Severe accidents and physical ailments have altered the lives of numerous individuals. And the list could go on.

It seems as if such suffering is random. And it is clear that such suffering is not distributed on the basis of good or evil that people have done. Both the godly and the wicked suffer. Christian philosopher William Lane Craig writes, "I think …
