The Explicative Route And The Momental Step:A Comparison Of The Pluralistic Focus In Leibniz And Whitehead., Richard L. Brougham Oct 1965

The Explicative Route And The Momental Step:A Comparison Of The Pluralistic Focus In Leibniz And Whitehead., Richard L. Brougham

Philosophy ETDs

There is little danger of disagreement if one states that Leibniz and Whitehead are two of the most significant "hylozoic" pluralists in western philosophy. Both thinkers are concerned with the definite, final unities of being. Both philosophers attempted to ground their multiple individualities in a wider ultimate reality, and at the same time attempted to maintain the import and distinctness of these units as the ultimate components of that reality. The crux of Whitehead’s philosophic endeavor was to "retain the balance between the individuality of existence and the relativity of existence." But there is an important divergence in the manner …

Developing Visual Creative Traits Through A Three Week Course Of Instruction And The Relationship Of Spontaneous And Deliberate Art Expression To Creative Achievement, Walter E. Rutkowski

Art & Art History ETDs

The development of creativity is of major interest to art education as well as education in general. It is assumed by art educators, that creativity can and should be derived through art. However, in art the development of creativity is at a very elementary stage of understanding that incorporates unproven feelings and assumptions into philosophies and aims.

The Oval Mirror., David Hugh Conford May 1965

The Oval Mirror., David Hugh Conford

English Language and Literature ETDs

I have little of that Dionysian faith which supposes that there are ways of "breaking through” to some ideal reality beyond the limits of the individual skin. We are all prisoners in individual cages of bones. It is difficult to even tap out a message to the people who have "known" us for years, and to communicate with strangers is a near impossibility. Yet it is one of poetry functions to attempt just that, for no poet worth his salt can, like Ivan Ivanich of Chekhov's "Gooseberries," murmur, "God forgive us sinners" and go to sleep.

Faced with, for me …

Pedro FermíN De Mendinueta;Colonial Governor Of New Mexico, 1767-1778., Elizabeth Nelson Patrick

History ETDs

Pedro Fermín de Mendinueta was born in Elizondo, Valle de Baztan, Navarra in 1725, probably on July 7. His baptismal record states he received that sacrament on July 8 and in as much as children were baptized as soon after birth as possible and often named after the saint on whose day they were born, it is probable that he, indeed, was born on the da of San Fermín, July 7. San Fermín, incidentally is the patron saint of Navarra, and a child born on that day would very likely bear that name. He was the legitimate son of don …

Social Status At The Court Of Alfonso Viii Of Castile, Lorle Ann Porter May 1965

Social Status At The Court Of Alfonso Viii Of Castile, Lorle Ann Porter

History ETDs

Excerpt from introduction:

This is a study of the social structure of Castile in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. The charter witness lists of that period as edited by Júlio González were the basis for this study. Charters formed an important part of the documentation of the Middle Ages. Royal charters, in general, officially conveyed the use of a specific property to a person who agreed to accept designated responsibilities. As the possession and or use of land was a key to medieval economy, it was essential that ownership or legitimate occupation was clear to the authorities. The …

Spanish Government In New Mexico At The End Of The Colonial Period, Marc Simmons May 1965

Spanish Government In New Mexico At The End Of The Colonial Period, Marc Simmons

History ETDs

Three years ago when this study was initiated, the intent was to describe the nature of political government in New Mexico during the Mexican period, 1821-1846. This task had been undertaken by Lansing B. Bloom almost fifty years previously and the results published in the journal Old Santa Fe. Much new material had since come to light, however, and it was felt that an entirely new appraisal of this era was in order. As research progressed, it became more and more obvious that no adequate treatment of the Mexican period could be attempted until a full understanding of government …

Thomas Paine:A Study In Social And Intellectual History, Jospeh V. Metzgar May 1965

Thomas Paine:A Study In Social And Intellectual History, Jospeh V. Metzgar

History ETDs

Excerpt From Preface:

My basic purpose then is to determine how far behind or ahead of his time was Thomas Paine. What was his relationship to the Enlightenment when one considers his political, social, or scientific thought? And finally what is his significance in social and intellectual history? Is Thomas Paine actually a thinker of "the second order of greatness" as Cecelia M. Kenyon and others contend or intimate? Or has he proved to be greater than that? I would hope to provide some possible answers to such questions.

Finally, I have no intention of trying to determine direct and …

The Transmountain Diversion Of Water From The Colorado River: A Legal-Historical Study., Kay Collins May 1965

The Transmountain Diversion Of Water From The Colorado River: A Legal-Historical Study., Kay Collins

History ETDs

Conflict is the inevitable result of a situation in which there is a large demand for water which is in short supply. And the Upper Basin of the Colorado River today offers no exception to that rule. The Eastern boundary of this Basin is the Continental Divide, meaning that water flowing on the eastern side of the divide will flow into the Atlantic Ocean and that west of it will flow into the Pacific. Each side of the Continental divide is hen divided into different river basins, the waters of which do not mingle because of the mountain barriers. Water …

Frontier Problems In New Mexico Preceding The Mexican War, 1840-1846, Ward Alan Minge May 1965

Frontier Problems In New Mexico Preceding The Mexican War, 1840-1846, Ward Alan Minge

History ETDs

The original intent of this paper was to examine some phase of the interrelationship of the Mexican, Indian, and United States' cultures in New Mexico during the two decades of Mexico administration. Research soon revealed that cultural conflicts only contributed their share to the problems which existed on this frontier. Identification of the problem areas narrowed the period of interest of the few years preceding the "bloodless conquest" of New Mexico by the United States. These years, roughly from 1840 to 1846, saw the culmination of a combination of circumstances over which New Mexican officials had little or no control. …

Personalities And Personages: A Study Of The Protagonists In F. Scott Fitzgerald's Novels, Richard Schroeder

English Language and Literature ETDs

In This Side of Paradise, F. Scott Fitzgerald stated a theme that was to be of prime importance not only in his first but also the rest of his novels. This theme, not an original one, is about the tendency in man to maitake the specious for the real or good. This problem is what Monsignor Darcy is discussing with Amory Blaine, the young hero of This Side of Paradise, when the Monsignor defines, to some extent, the terms personality and personage.

The Roots Of Patriotic Extremism:The National Security Leaue And The Great Red Scare., Fred G. Morgner May 1965

The Roots Of Patriotic Extremism:The National Security Leaue And The Great Red Scare., Fred G. Morgner

History ETDs

America’s first significant contact with communism occurred during the months immediately following World War I and was characterized by a predominant mood of intolerance and hysteria. During this period a small but influential group of Americans devoted their complete time and energy to combat radicalism and to promote 100 per cent Americanism. The National Security League was one of the most powerful spokesmen for these individuals. A study of the League is important in understanding how militant anti-radicalism emerged as a vital form of nativism during the Red Scare of 1919-1920.

The Land Claims Of Santa Clara Pueblo, Joanne Baklini Feb 1965

The Land Claims Of Santa Clara Pueblo, Joanne Baklini

History ETDs

In 1848 the United States assumed sovereignty in New Mexico under the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo and promised to respect, among other things, the property of the Indians. This began a land problem which has not been solved to this day.

In an effort to solve the Indian and other land problems, Congress established the Office of Surveyor-General for New Mexico. In 1858, upon the recommendation of the Surveyor-General, the Santa Clara Pueblo Grant was confirmed and on November 1, 1864 it was patented. However, the Santa Clara Indians did not receive title to the land which they …

The Doctor In Marcel Proust's A La Recherche Du Temps Perdu., Michael L. Rowland

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This study undertakes an examination of the doctors and illnesses in Marcel Proust’s life and of the doctors and illnesses in A La Recherche du Temps perdu. The first chapter reviews Prout’s relationship with doctors, especially with his father, who was a practicing physician. Illness, in addition to being an inconvenience, was for Proust a source of many important privileges, upon which he never ceased to draw. In this respect, the question is raised to what degree Proust’s illnesses were genuine. The doctors that appear in A La Recherche du Temps perdu comprise the next topic of discussion. An effort …

The Macabre In The Indianist Works Of Bernardo GuimarãEs., Ellen Ann Nelson Jan 1965

The Macabre In The Indianist Works Of Bernardo GuimarãEs., Ellen Ann Nelson

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The various novel of Bernardo Guimaraes, written for the moot part during the thirty-year period 1853-1884, are in many respects typical reflections of the literary currents then prevalent in Brazil. In topic and treatment Guimarães’ work reflected the popular taste and differed little from the work of his contemporaries. It was only in the Indianist works, A voz do pagé and, to a lesser extent in the work in which the Indians figured ae minor characters, that Guimarães’ introduced an element unique in Brazilian literature of the time. This unique element was a detailed description of the macbre and a …

Gabriel Marcel, Master Of Mysterious Wisdom., Ronald E. Lane Jan 1965

Gabriel Marcel, Master Of Mysterious Wisdom., Ronald E. Lane

Philosophy ETDs

The philosophic thought of Gabriel marcel is impossible to categorize. He does indeed employ a phenomenological method of approach to being; and affirms that “today there can be no philosophy worth considering that will not involve an analysis, of a phenomenological type, bearing on the fundamental situation of man.” But his philosophical analysis does not have the character of Husserlian ‘bracketing’ or isolating in eidetic purification. It is an explication of the personal ground of thought, including its relationship to the ‘other’ human or divine, rather than an examination of isolated and purified experiences of consciousness: “By ‘phenomenological analysis’ I …

John Philoponus' Commentary On Aristotle's Theory Of The World, Christos Kaplanides Jan 1965

John Philoponus' Commentary On Aristotle's Theory Of The World, Christos Kaplanides

Art & Art History ETDs

The contributions of the Greeks to the development and evolution science are enormous. Not only were the Greeks the originators of the basic philosophical and scientific: modes of reflection in the western world, but they were also the continuators as well as the best commentators and critics of their ancestors and their contemporaries. To restrict the contributions of the Greeks to science to the pre-Roman period would be wrong. It would be equally as -wrong to restrict the presense of original thinkers to that period also.

Not long ago I received a letter from Africa:

Jambo sana!

It had been a very long time since I held from you, I do not know whether you are well or not. We are just thinking that may be you are sick in the hospital and if not that, may be your are busy looking for a wife these day or you are near to have your wedding soon.
