Cosi Fan Tutte, Christine Seitz, Unlv Symphony Orchestra, Taras Krysa, Richard Brandon Brunson Mar 2008

Cosi Fan Tutte, Christine Seitz, Unlv Symphony Orchestra, Taras Krysa, Richard Brandon Brunson

Opera

Cosi fan tutte was commissioned by Emperor Joseph II after a revival of Le nozze di Figaro in August 1789. It is rumored that he asked Lorenzo Da Ponte to base the libretto on a recent Viennese scandal; although, the plot is not new to literary history. This opera buffa premiered in Vienna at the Burgtheater on 26 January 1790 and received five performances before the emperor's death on 20 February when all the theaters closed; five more followed from June to August.

Alcina, Taras Krysa, Phillip Lenberg Nov 2007

Alcina, Taras Krysa, Phillip Lenberg

Opera

Alcina was written at a time in Handel's career in London when the company faced competition from a rival company and a resulting financial pinch. There was no loss in the master's artistry, however. Premiered at the new theatre at Covent Garden in 1735, Alcina was sufficiently successful to be revived for the following two seasons. It inexplicably fell into an extended period of neglect thereafter, to be revived once again by Franco Zeffirelli for the young Joan Sutherland in 1957.

Don Giovanni, Unlv Symphony Orchestra, Christine Seitz, George Stelluto

Opera

Don Giovanni premiered in Prague on October 27 1787, following the tremendous success of Mozart's opera Le nozze di Figaro (The marriage of Figaro) that premiered in Prague the previous year. Uniquely dubbed a 'dramma giocoso,' Don Giovanni was formed by Mozart and the librettist Lorenzo da Ponte (who also collaborated on Le nozze di Figaro) into a two-act opera that focuses on Don Juan's (Don Giovanni's) last day on Earth. Da Ponte, who was inspired by content from other operas dealing with the same subject, was acquainted with the famous libertine, Casanova. Legends claim that Casanova worked a few …

La Boheme, Taras Krysa, Phillip Lenberg Mar 2007

La Boheme, Taras Krysa, Phillip Lenberg

Opera

One of the most popular and beloved operas of all time, La Bohème was composed in December 1895 by Giacomo Puccini. He became interested in the Scènes de Ia vie de Bohème, a novel by Henri Murger in the winter of 1892-3, before the premiere of Manon Lescaut. His intention to base an opera on Murger's novel involved him in controversy with Leoncavallo, who claimed precedence on the novel in 1893 in his publisher's periodical, II secolo. Leoncavallo asserted that he already had artists in mind and that this fact was well known by Puccini. This …
