Well established is a connection between gender stereotypes and children’s STEM perceptions. STEM self-concept, for example, is consistently identified as stronger for boys than girls (Cvencek et. et al 2011). While research has documented differences in STEM self-competencies between adolescent boys and girls (Miller et. al 2018), there remains much to be learned about the classroom conditions that may explain how children understand stereotypes and act on that understanding in their interactions with other children. This cannot be done without including the histories of Indigenous peoples. The Charles Chesnutt Archive: Charles Chesnutt And The Black Community Who Aided Him, Bianca Swift, Bianca Swift

A pioneer of African American literature and the first to reach a national audience with his writings, Chesnutt wrote nine novels, eighty-five short stories, and more than seventy essays and speeches. As a prolific writer Chesnutt often interacted with other black intellectuals and academics including; W.E.B. Du Bois, Booker T. Washington, Walter F. White, and Kelly Miller. This poster makes the argument that his connections to these figures aided him in his writings and his presence in history. As well as comparing his standing in history as a black person speaking about race to the 21st century view through poetry.

The purpose of this study is to further the progress of annotating and sharing renowned Nebraskan author Willa Cather’s correspondence through digital means. I will do this by assisting the current team at the Willa Cather Archive with their project titled The Complete Letters of Willa Cather. The team behind this project has made about 1,600 letters available to the public, and they estimate that by 2022 over 3,000 letters will be accessible through their website. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, there is a 70 percent rise in the number of overdose cases arriving at emergency departments in the Midwest (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin) since August 2016. The construction industry alone has attributed almost 1,000 deaths to opioid overdoses. This fast-moving epidemic is taking many Nebraska rural communities by surprise.

In the United States judiciary system, judges are assumed to be unbiased in their legal decisions on cases. In many cases, unfortunately, this is rarely the reality. By examining Judge Thomas Burke specifically, a survey of Seattle's legal environment can be revealed. From Judge Burke's connections with the railroad industry and protection of Chinese laborers during anti-Chinese riots reveals his desire for economic gain. With Judge Burke only presiding over two habeas corpus cases, neither dealing with anti-Chinese riots or the legality of Chinese laborers, no concrete conclusion can be drawn in that regard. Sentiment Analysis Of William Cranch's Petitions For Freedom Court Reports Using Python And Vader., Anna Krause

Text analysis from William Cranch's court reports on the 19th Century African American Petitions for Freedom. Cranch provided selected court reports and their full title, date, and document text was imported to a csv file. This data was then analyzed using Python and its multiple software libraries to clean and prepare the text. The VADER(Valence Aware Dictionary and sEntiment Reasoner) package was utilized to give a sentiment score to each body of text, then was compared and visualized with the entire corpus. Results showed that most court reports carried a high rate of positive sentiment.

The purpose of this research is to explore specific techniques and processes as employed by Eddie Dominguez through an apprenticeship in ceramic art in which I will be intimately involved in both the critical thinking and process of Professor Dominguez’ work. Sebald Beham (1500-1550) was a Northern Renaissance artist born in Nuremberg, Germany. His works include woodcuts, engravings, paintings, and designs for stained glass. Most of his works are prints, however. The archaeological site of Copán—a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Honduras—was a primary center for cultural and economic exchange in the Maya world from the fifth to ninth centuries. Our research investigates the sociopolitical climate of the city immediately preceding this collapse. This poster presents the results of a pilot study intended to evaluate the potential of using a combination of digital technologies and legacy data to reanalyze a subset of diagnostic ceramics from select sites outside of Copan’s urban core.
