Immigrant Detention Revisited, Nealay Vasavda Oct 2018

Immigrant Detention Revisited, Nealay Vasavda

Ephemeris, the Undergraduate Journal of Philosophy

In the relatively short time since my original paper was published (Vasavda, 2016), there have been numerous administrative changes in the treatment of undocumented immigrants in the United States. Moreover, immigration seems to have grown into more of a hot-button subject than ever, with the president of the United States making it one of his signature issues. Given President Trump's anti-immigration rhetoric, it is unsurprising that the conditions in immigrant detention centers have not improved since the publication fo m y original paper. It is therefor worthwhile to reexamine the current landscape of immigrant detention in the Unites States through …

Schlegel And Plato On Idealism, Natalie Mathes Oct 2018

Schlegel And Plato On Idealism, Natalie Mathes

Ephemeris, the Undergraduate Journal of Philosophy

This paper examines Schlegel's "Dialogue on Poesy" to demonstrate that, while Schlegel is responding to his own sociohistorical context, he is also providing a proposal for the role poetry could play in helping citizens achieve an ideal state and providing a defense against the concerns about and critiques of poetry in society, as expressed in Plato's treatment of the ancient myths.

Non-Identity Problem In Context Of Mitigating Historical Injustice, Brian Wong Oct 2018

Non-Identity Problem In Context Of Mitigating Historical Injustice, Brian Wong

Ephemeris, the Undergraduate Journal of Philosophy

The Counterfactual Account of compensation posits that descendants of victims are owed compensation as they are left worse off as a result of the acts of injustice perpetuated upon their ancestors (Nozick, 1974). There is a wide range of objections to the Counterfactual Account; I recognize that these are all issues but I will focus predominantly on showing why the Non-Identity Problem is not a valid objection to the account.

“Desire Is The Mark Of The Creature”, Noah Nathaniel Neiber Oct 2018

“Desire Is The Mark Of The Creature”, Noah Nathaniel Neiber

Ephemeris, the Undergraduate Journal of Philosophy

The conception of love is an issue of intense discussion in Western culture. This was as true in the ancient world as in the modern. Perhaps the most influential and most misunderstood contributor to this debate was Plato. Platonic Eros was the expression in the philosophical context of the wider Greek idea of love.

The Tesla Problem: Trolleys, Proximity, And Duty, Charles Harry Smith Oct 2018

The Tesla Problem: Trolleys, Proximity, And Duty, Charles Harry Smith

Ephemeris, the Undergraduate Journal of Philosophy

I want to raw attention to problems that close physical proximity between the driver and bystander can reveal in a new take on Judith Jarvis Thomson's well-known Trolly Problem. I apply Thomson's reasoning to hypothetical situations involving semi-autonomous, self-driving vehicles in order to highlight how complicated and counter-intuitive the distinctions between the two roles can become when physical distance is taken into account. This 'Tesla Problem' has clear implications for ethics and the laws governing autonomous vehicles, and they redound to how we should understand Thomson's original problem.

Extraordinary Episodes Of Ancient Money, Francis Louis Kailey Jun 2018

Extraordinary Episodes Of Ancient Money, Francis Louis Kailey

Honors Theses

The spread of coins, which occurred throughout the archaic and classical periods of Greece, was a foundational advancement toward forms of the modern economy. Modern theory has sought to explain the invention of coins with a variety of narratives. Generally, these narratives fall into two broad categories: market-driven monetization or state-driven monetization. On the one hand, some theory argues that coins developed from reducing private transaction costs. On the other hand, some theorists argue that the state benefitted from reductions in administrative costs from the use of coins and therefore undertook the cost of minting them. This thesis problematizes these …

Das Deutsche Lied: Eine Songwriting-Tradition Für Das Volk, Ethan Watson Jun 2018

Das Deutsche Lied: Eine Songwriting-Tradition Für Das Volk, Ethan Watson

Honors Theses

This thesis focuses on the analysis of two prominent German Lieder. Through the works of Goethe, Schubert, and Wolf Biermann, I have attempted to show the progression of the songwriting genre and how it has transitioned from universally-understood emotion to specific political protest through the intimate monologues contained in song.

The Codependent Development Of Patriotism And Xenophobia In The United States, Particularly In Regard To Arabs And Muslims In America Following September 11, 2001, Zachary Baum Jun 2018

The Codependent Development Of Patriotism And Xenophobia In The United States, Particularly In Regard To Arabs And Muslims In America Following September 11, 2001, Zachary Baum

Honors Theses

The United States has always claimed to be endowed with unique values, such as tolerance and justice, and so throughout its history has sought to convey these values with expressions of patriotism. However, is this patriotism simply symbolic, and further, does it even lead itself to xenophobia and racism. This thesis seeks to answer this question by examining the genesis and development of patriotism throughout the country’s history, as well as the way in which its racism and xenophobia have changed. Beginning with a general examination of the usefulness and positivity of patriotism from a scholarly standpoint, the basic points …

A Woman's Gaze, Emily Fiore Jun 2018

A Woman's Gaze, Emily Fiore

Honors Theses

My work merges my passion of thinking politically and artistically. This series, A Woman’s Gaze, is an extension of my Political Science thesis, where I focused on artists who combat the male gaze by representing women’s lives realistically, from a woman’s perspective. These paintings focus on intimate scenarios from women’s lives where the male gaze is absent. The large scale imagery brings visibility to these otherwise private moments.

La Genara: La Libertad Falsa De La Mujer Elite En México, Emily Sullivan Jun 2018

La Genara: La Libertad Falsa De La Mujer Elite En México, Emily Sullivan

Honors Theses

The goal of feminism is to ensure the equality of all genders. This goal means that women are supposed to be seen as equal to men in society. However, despite the many feminist efforts to bring this equality into reality, many in the world still believe that women are inferior to men. This belief stems from historical oppression of women that has continued up until modern day times. In Mexico, there is still strong beliefs that exist that prevent women from achieving liberation and freedom in society. Ideas related to traditional family values, machismo, and internalized misogyny all act as …

The Federal Art Project: Intentions, Goals, And Legacy, Meghan Bentley Jun 2018

The Federal Art Project: Intentions, Goals, And Legacy, Meghan Bentley

Honors Theses

Created under the umbrella program called the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the Great Depression, the Federal Art Project (FAP) was a unique program that attempted to put struggling artists back to work and aimed to preserve artistic skill in American society. This thesis examines the efficacy and legacy of the Federal Art Project by examining the legitimacy of the criticisms levied against the FAP, the effect the FAP was able to have on the American public and arts community, and closes by examining the findings of these claims within the context of a collection of local FAP paintings. While …

Bread And Repression, Too: The Battle For Labor’S Memory And The Lawrence Textile Strike Of 1912, Andrew Hubbard Jun 2018

Bread And Repression, Too: The Battle For Labor’S Memory And The Lawrence Textile Strike Of 1912, Andrew Hubbard

Honors Theses

This thesis focuses on the historiography of the Lawrence Textile Strike of 1912 as representative of a larger trend of repression of American labor narratives. It draws from oral history accounts, news coverage and analysis from 1912, resources at the Lawrence History Center collected throughout the city’s process of memorialization, secondary historical accounts of the event, and formative works of labor history.

The first chapter introduces the American labor narrative, the history of repression by authority, the efforts of labor historians to memorialize suppressed history, and the role that monuments, historians, and popular fictional accounts play in the formation …

The Importance Of State Intervention In Improving Gender Inequality In China, Jenny Cheng Jun 2018

The Importance Of State Intervention In Improving Gender Inequality In China, Jenny Cheng

Honors Theses

Over the last century, China has undergone a tremendous amount of change. For women, these changes have brought unprecedented rights and opportunities. The state plays a critical role in the status of women in China and this is shown in the accomplishments that the Chinese government has achieved regarding women's rights. To understand gender disparity in China, it is important to understand traditional customs and rituals, traditional ideologies, and the traditional roles that the state used to play in the subordination women in ancient Chinese society. However, enormous changes have occurred in the last century. The fall of the last …

Nasty Women: Television Portrayals Of Societal Anxieties Toward Female Leaders, Emily Sullivan Jun 2018

Nasty Women: Television Portrayals Of Societal Anxieties Toward Female Leaders, Emily Sullivan

Honors Theses

Historically, women have been excluded from leadership positions around the world, while instead men occupy the highest positions of power in society. The lack of female leadership is especially prevalent in the United States, where there has never been a female president, and the majority of high political offices are still held by men. In a similar manner, women have also been excluded from the sphere of comedy throughout history. Women have constantly had to deal with the assertion that women are not funny. This double exclusion from both leadership and comedy has led to the development of my concept …

Jane, Judith, And Gender Performance: A Butlerian Approach To Feminine Identity In Mansfield Park, Hallie Stone Jun 2018

Jane, Judith, And Gender Performance: A Butlerian Approach To Feminine Identity In Mansfield Park, Hallie Stone

Honors Theses

In this thesis, I take two complex works, Judith Butler’s Gender Trouble and Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park, and read them together to gain a deeper understanding of both. My cutting-edge psychoanalytic approach to understanding Jane Austen provides a profound insight into the impact of socially-constructed expectations on performances of femininity. Butler’s work exposes interesting insights into the psychology and feminine identity of both Fanny Price and Mary Crawford while Austen’s work exposes limits in Butler’s theory of gender performativity. Although Butler claims that gender is a body’s constant performance, I add that there is a relationship between gender performance …

A Study Of The Pantheon Through Time, Caitlin Williams Jun 2018

A Study Of The Pantheon Through Time, Caitlin Williams

Honors Theses

I analyze the Pantheon, one of the most well-preserved buildings from antiquity, through time. I start with Agrippa's Pantheon, the original Pantheon that is no longer standing, which was built in 27 or 25 BC. What did it look like originally under Augustus? Why was it built? We then shift to the Pantheon that stands today, Hadrian-Trajan's Pantheon, which was completed around AD 125-128, and represents an example of an architectural revolution. Was it even a temple? We also look at the Pantheon's conversion to a church, which helps explain why it is so well preserved. My study aims for …

La Violence Sexuelle Faite Aux Femmes Musulmanes Dans Les Banlieues : Le RôLe Des IdéOlogies Fondamentalistes D’Islam, De La Stigmatisation De L’Homme Musulman Et Du FéMinisme Blanc, Elsa Farooq Jun 2018

La Violence Sexuelle Faite Aux Femmes Musulmanes Dans Les Banlieues : Le RôLe Des IdéOlogies Fondamentalistes D’Islam, De La Stigmatisation De L’Homme Musulman Et Du FéMinisme Blanc, Elsa Farooq

Honors Theses

In a post-Harvey Weinstein world, sexual assault and sexual harassment have become a daily conversation around the world; however, frequently missing in this conversation are the voices of minority women. In France, sexual violence against Muslim women in the low-income housing areas called banlieues has been an issue for some time, with factors such as fundamentalist Islam, the stigmatization of Muslim men, and what some have called “white feminism” contributing to the problem as well as to the difficulty of talking about it. Underlying these forces is France’s colonial past, which has shaped how and why sexual violence has become …

The Eternal Rehearsal: Judith Butler's Gender Performativity In Wilkie Collins, Sarah Waters, And Tana French, Jillian Slezek Jun 2018

The Eternal Rehearsal: Judith Butler's Gender Performativity In Wilkie Collins, Sarah Waters, And Tana French, Jillian Slezek

Honors Theses

Judith Butler’s Gender Trouble proposed the groundbreaking theory of gender as a constant performance: a series of cues observed, internalized, and repeated over time. Her argument benefits society’s desire to deconstruct gender, and her ideas apply to a vast array of texts and periods. In fact, whereas Butler’s text was published in 1990, over a hundred years earlier Wilkie Collins already toyed with gender performance in his formative novel, The Woman in White (1860). In this thesis, I examine The Woman in White through a Butlerian lens, illuminating how Collins began critiquing the concept of performative gender, especially with regard …

The North Pool, Matthew Mintz Jun 2018

The North Pool, Matthew Mintz

Honors Theses

The North Pool is set in Sheffield Massachusetts, in a typical American public high school. The entirety of the show takes place on Friday, April 13, 2007. The play takes place during spring time, so it can be assumed that it is mildly warm but not too hot. Specifically, it is known that the meeting time between the two protagonists, and the start of what the audience witnesses, begins at 4 in the afternoon. In terms of evaluating the economic environment, the most valued thing throughout this play is the memory of Lia Whinston, the student who committed suicide. She …

Steel Sculpture: A Study Of Monumentality, Abigail Golodik Jun 2018

Steel Sculpture: A Study Of Monumentality, Abigail Golodik

Honors Theses

This thesis is an exploration of steel sculpture and how each form varies in characteristics and prominence depending on size, shape, and color. I am inspired by graphic design and clean forms, and wanted to realize this aesthetic in my sculptures. The thesis work includes four steel sculptures made of two inch pipe and other maquettes and sketches to show the construction process.

Through sharp angles and clean lines, I play with perspective, making viewers feel the presence and tension of my forms. I begin with sketches, construct maquettes, and use these as a blueprint during the final production. Drawing …

Milestones, Naomi Letourneau Jun 2018

Milestones, Naomi Letourneau

Honors Theses

My sculpture is inspired by cairns, mounds of rocks that represent a memorial or landmark and serve as markers along a trail. These sculptures were created combining digital fabrication and traditional sculpting methods. Inspired by milestones in my own life, the goal of this series is to encourage self-reflection in order to remind us that we all must find balance while on our own paths.

Film Stills, Kevin Jordan Jun 2018

Film Stills, Kevin Jordan

Honors Theses

Film cinematography has always fascinated me, particularly the way composition, color, and lighting augment the subject's mood and can evoke an emotion out of viewers. I want to emulate this in my portraits, with the goal of transporting the viewers into another world.

L'Éducation Comme Activisme: Comment Des Associations Françaises Lgbt Actuelles Utilisent Des Interventions En Milieu Scolaire Pour Sensibiliser Des Élèves Aux Identités Lgbt, William Garner Jun 2018

L'Éducation Comme Activisme: Comment Des Associations Françaises Lgbt Actuelles Utilisent Des Interventions En Milieu Scolaire Pour Sensibiliser Des Élèves Aux Identités Lgbt, William Garner

Honors Theses

Honors Theses

This paper examines the experiences of women in real life and television programs involved with drug cartels in Mexico. For women, life centered on narcotic trade in Mexico may be framed by both terror and abuse. However, there also exists a certain power dynamic achieved by women in positions of power in cartels. These real life women are known as “Las Flacas,” a self-given label that affirms both their reclamation of sexuality and also their acquiescing to a patriarchal society. Narcofiction exists as a new art form of processing and reacting to a life heavily influenced by drug trade in …

La Economía De La Violencia: La Ciudad Juárez Y El Mercado Libre De La Muerte, Kritika Amanjee Jun 2018

La Economía De La Violencia: La Ciudad Juárez Y El Mercado Libre De La Muerte, Kritika Amanjee

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the utilization of human life to further the parallel economies of manufacture and narco-trafficking in Mexico. It begins by recalling the impacts of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on Mexico’s local economies. Shifts in economic dynamics that resulted from NAFTA internally displaced thousands of impoverished Mexicans, ultimately pushing them into the growing economies of manufacture and narco-trafficking. The manufacture industry and its effects on the common people are examined with a specific focus on Ciudad Juárez, a border city in the state of Chihuahua. The growth of maquiladoras attracted thousands of young women to work, …

Desire In The Bildungsroman: Construction And Pursuit Of An Ideal Self Through The Ideal Other, Ethan Watson Jun 2018

Desire In The Bildungsroman: Construction And Pursuit Of An Ideal Self Through The Ideal Other, Ethan Watson

Honors Theses

The Bildungsroman, or “novel of education,” has remained popular since Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship. I examine this novel, as well as Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations, and Walter Moers’s Rumo & His Miraculous Adventures, focusing specifically on the relationships between the three male protagonists and the women that they encounter throughout their lives. Using the theories of psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, literary critic René Girard, and feminist philosopher Judith Butler, I draw parallels between and contribute to the scholarly conversation of all three works (or in the case of Moers's recent fantasy, Rumo, begin …

The "Give And Take" Of Medical Morality, Caitlyn Tabor Jun 2018

The "Give And Take" Of Medical Morality, Caitlyn Tabor

Honors Theses

Doctors face situations within the medical arena in which their conscience -- as a person and as a professional -- conflicts with patient autonomy. Consider the terminally ill patient who wishes to end all treatment and elect to receive assisted suicide, and his physician who believes that aiding in death is a moral wrong. This creates a conflict of interests between physician and patient.

Historically, a paternalistic model of physician-patient interaction was employed to deal with dilemmas, contributing to infringement of patient’s rights and a lack of understanding of ethics on the part of the physician. This manifests as the …

Los Efectos Del Machismo En El Desarrollo De Los Trastornos De Salud Mental De Las Mujeres En México, Tiffany George Jun 2018

Los Efectos Del Machismo En El Desarrollo De Los Trastornos De Salud Mental De Las Mujeres En México, Tiffany George

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the role of machismo and how it impacts women in Mexico. Machismo dominates Mexican society where men have complete authority and control over women, thus trapping them under patriarchal rule. This thesis examines how the novel, La Genara written by Rosina Conde, highlights the detrimental effects of machismo through letters between two sisters, Genara and Luisa. This study examines the ways in which Mexican women are silenced, oppressed and abused and the ways in which societal norms affects their mental state, and sometimes to mental disorders, and it also shows that in such a society, there is …

Nevertheless, She Persisted: Title Ix And The Fight For Gender Equity In Athletics In The Twentieth Century, Gillian O'Dowd Jun 2018

Nevertheless, She Persisted: Title Ix And The Fight For Gender Equity In Athletics In The Twentieth Century, Gillian O'Dowd

Honors Theses

During the first half of the twentieth century, the field of athletics in the United States was dominated by a culture of masculinity. Due to this inherent link with masculinity, American women were kept from participating in sports to protect their feminine nature. As the years passed of continuous oppression, only a small handful of women were able to fight back and make a name for themselves as prominent and successful athletes. To combat the larger issue of gender discrimination in America, a women’s movement was launched in the 1960s and 1970s. This movement would in turn spur the creation …

“As An American, May I Have The Privilege Of Pulling The Switch?” : The Fate Of Julius And Ethel Rosenberg During The Second Red Scare In Cold War America, Morgan Peters Jun 2018

“As An American, May I Have The Privilege Of Pulling The Switch?” : The Fate Of Julius And Ethel Rosenberg During The Second Red Scare In Cold War America, Morgan Peters

Honors Theses

The Cold War escalated at the end of World War II when the tension between the United States and Soviet Union significantly increased. The stakes of the Cold War were considerably high, especially during the atomic age. Hence the creation of the Venona Project, which began in 1943 and was originally a small project intended to break down Soviet diplomatic communications, but later expanded to be a full-blown counterintelligence operation. The project’s American cryptologists took nearly two years to decode the first Soviet coded telegraph cable. The project exposed multiple Soviet Spies in the United States, some of the most …
