Nicholas Smith was born in Malden, Massachusetts in 1926. He attended the University of Maine from 1946 to 1950 and receiving his BA in American History. He later attended Columbia University for his MA in Medieval/European history. Smith was passionate about the conservation of Native American history and the rights of the communities he worked closely with for well over 50 years.

The collection consists of a series of interviews conducted from 1974 to 1980 by students for a course (IDL 105, Women in Maine: An Autobiographical Approach) taught by Maryann Hartman in the department of Speech and Communications at the University of Maine. Students asked a variety of informants for their opinions about the present and future roles of women in Maine. Each informant discussed this in the context of their own lives and experiences, therefore the individual interviews cover a wide range of topics. Susan Stevens was born in Salem, Massachusetts. In 1934 she received her bachelor's degree from the University of Connecticut, followed by her master's degree from the University of Massachusetts. Additionally she was working toward a Ph.D. at the University of California. She had a great interest in Indian people and their culture, moving to the Passamaquoddy Indian reservation in Princeton, Maine, in 1969. Our Neighborhood Club of Old Town, Maine, was organized in 1893 and federated in the Maine Federation of Women's Clubs in 1901. The group sought out the collective betterment of each member and the community by doing charity work. They often donated gifts, money, and time to hospitals, veterans organizations, and cancer research.

The Our Neighborhood Club papers collection consists of club program booklets, scrapbooks, photographs, as well as club meeting minutes and attendance. The collection does have papers that span between 1908 to 2007, however, the collection primarily focuses on club materials during the 1960s through the 1990s.

This research was undertaken in the mid-1970s by Anthony M. (Tony) Kaliss to provide supporting data for use as a part of the land claims suit by the Passamaquoddy and Penobscot Tribes. The suit has long been settled and the tribes were federally recognized. Both tribes had been recognized and dealt with continuously since at least the 1700s first by the Massachusetts colony, then by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a state and then the State of Maine when it separated from Massachusetts in 1820. The Dean of Men reported to the Director of Student Services (and Registrar) and was later part of the Student Affairs Office. The dean was responsible for student housing and discipline and oversaw the many male student groups on campus including fraternities. There was also a Dean of Women who had similar responsibilities for female students. Part of the role of Dean of Men was to also chair the University of Maine Health Service and Athletic Board. Norman Nash was born in Bangor, Me. in 1888. He was educated at Harvard, Episcopal Theological Seminary, and Western Theological Seminary. He served in WWI as a Chaplain; from 1916-1939 and was a professor at the Episcopal Theological Seminary.

The Norman B. Nash collection contains historical research on Eastern Maine and New Brunswick. The collection includes manuscripts, notes, correspondence, and illustrations. A number of original documents are photocopied.

The collection contains copies of photographs of Penobscot Indian life taken in the field by Frank G. Speck around 1911, as well as copies of some photographs collected by him. Many pieces depicted now belong to the National Museum of the American Indian, George Gustav Heye Center. Heye sponsored some of Speck's work. The photographs depict individual Penobscot Indians as well as objects such as baskets, snowshoes, tools, clothing, etc.

The earliest papers are from Joseph Greenwood of Dublin, NH. Joespeh was a leading citizen of Dublin, serving as Selectman, Treasurer, Town Clerk, schoolmaster, Justice of the Peace, and Representative to the First Provincial Congress of New Hampshire.
