Women’s basketball, as an intercollegiate activity, had its beginning in the 1971-72 season, along with a number of other women’s sports. Unfortunately, there is no statistical compilation of the early days of women’s basketball until the 1975-76 season. In that season Eilene Fox was named head coach and she continued in that post until the 1983-84 season when Peter Gavett assumed the reins.

Lack of depth proved to be the major factor in one of the rarities of Black Bear swimming—a losing (3-8) season in 1984-85. Coach Alan Switzer believes that considerable progress has been made in rectifying that problem with the addition of a number of very promising freshmen to go with a nucleus of proven veterans.

The history of varsity hockey at the University of Maine can be divided into two eras. The first began shortly after the end of World War I when American college campuses were flooded with returning GIs. Varsity athletics in general were just beginning to return to their pre-war levels at most campuses when hockey as a college sport began a major resurgence across the country.
