Graduation took little from last year's squad, which finished a close second in the New England Championships. A solid freshman group and the addition of several transfer students will keep the intrasquad competition keen and should help make the season a good one.

Northeast Folklore Society Newsletter, Vol. 13, Northeast Archives Of Folklore And Oral History

Northeast Folklore Society Newsletter

Argyle Boom, Vol. XVII of Northeast Folklore, is now being sent to Northeast Folklore Society members and libraries, and is ready for sale from our office. It is a readable book on what at first appears to be an unreadable subject. Written and edited mostly by Sandy Ives, with a back up crew of some twelve fieldwork students and eighteen informants, the book covers (in the usual exhaustive Ives Style) the description, operation, and peripheral data of the Argyle Boom and neighboring booms as they existed in the first two decades of the 20th century. An enormous operation in its …

I could have listened to Sparky Rucker for the entire 4 1/2 hours. That's how long the Friday night installment of Folksongs in February was. Sparky Rucker was the last performer of the evening, going on at 11:40 [p.m.]. Believe me, at that hour, his performance was like a shot of adrenalin. Six hundred pairs of eyes and ears suddenly snapped to attention. Black southern traditional music presented with such explosive, energetic, boot-stomping depth—what a finish!!

Lumbercamp Singing And The Two Traditions, Edward D, Ives Jan 1977

Lumbercamp Singing And The Two Traditions, Edward D, Ives

Dr. Edward D. Ives Papers

What I will do in this short paper is to describe singing as it occurred in the lumbercamps of Maine during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. What was its function, when, where, and (in broad terms only) how was it done; who were the singers, and what was the basic repertoire? I will then take my own early assumption that there were two traditions in the Northeast: something called "lumbercamp" or "woods" tradition and something called "local" tradition. I will wind up by redefining these two traditions and something called "local" tradition. I will wind up by redefining …

Social Impact Summary : Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project / Prepared For The Department Of The Army, Corps Of Engineers, New England Division, Edward C. Jordan Company, Inc.

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project

The Dickey-Lincoln Hydroelectric Dam is a water resources project proposed by the Federal Government (U. S. Army Corps of Engineers). Therefore, in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act, the Corps of Engineers is required to prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) on the project. A federal plan or project such as Dickey-Lincoln should take into account its effect upon man's health, safety, welfare and economic well-being, as well as effects upon the surrounding environment. More importantly, project plans should be evaluated in a "manner calculated to encourage harmony between man and his environment." In other words, project plans or …

Objective of this study will be to assess Dickey-Lincoln in terms of its attainment of project objectives. How will this be done? Transmission Reconnaissance Study : Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project, United States Department Of Interior

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project

Two dams are proposed on the St. John River in northern Maine: Dickey, a high earth filled dam immediately above the confluence of the Allagash with the St. John, will have an installed generating capacity of 760 MW; and Lincoln School Dam, 11 miles downstream, a capacity of 70 MW. These dams are scheduled for completion during the mid 1980's. The U.S. Corps of Engineers, New England Division, has been allocated funds to design the project and prepare their own environmental impact statement. This report (Transmission Reconnaissance Studies) discusses alternative transmission facilities needed to connect the project with the New …
