The collection contains records of the Penobscot Paddle and Chowder Society, an organization in Bangor, Maine, for people interested in canoeing, kayaking and other outdoor activities. The materials center on environmental advocacy activities of the group in the 1970's.

The Society, organized in 1968-1969, is a family-oriented group which through its activities promotes interest in paddling, paddling instruction, river safety, and conservation. A volunteer organization, it seeks to make canoeing and kayaking safe, accessible, and fun. John Gardner, born in 1801, was the principal surveyor in Calais, Maine from about 1830 until his death in 1888. He did original layouts for many towns and roads in eastern Washington County. He was also a schoolteacher and served several terms as county commissioner after the Civil War. After his death, his son, Benjamin Gardner, took over the business for a short time until his son, Benjamin E. Gardner, returned to Calais in the late 1890s. Benjamin E. Gardner was a civil engineer and land surveyor. As city engineer he laid out the sewers in Calais, and in 1904 …

The collection contains report slips for bird sightings used in a collaborative project of the Portland Society of Natural History and the Maine Audubon Society. Under the guidance of Christopher M. Packard, curator of the Portland Society, project members, both observers and "feeding station operators" recorded bird and other natural history observations from around the state of Maine.

The collection contains photographs taken by Edwin R. Starbird, a professional photographer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, specializing in views of the Maine woods. Included are 62 photographs taken by Starbird, including 20 identified as part of his Woods of Maine series. It also contains a folder of Starbird family papers which includes marriage certificates for Amos Starbird and Mary J. Gilkey, 1852; and for Edwin Starbird and Mattie A. Thompson, 1882; as well as a lease for a hall in Farmington, 1882, and other miscellaneous material.

This small collection consists almost entirely of correspondence written to Rachel Lowe, 1917-1959, from various collectors and experts in the study and identification of mosses. The letters are arranged in chronological order although there is some evidence from the collection that Mrs. Lowe may have kept at least part of her correspondence together by correspondent. Envelopes have been kept in most cases because Mrs. Lowe often made notes on them.

Most letters concern identification of specimens collected by Mrs. Lowe. Frequent correspondents were associated with the University of Pennsylvania Botanical Laboratory, the New York Botanical Garden, DePaux University, the University …

Daphne Merrill was born in Rockland, Maine. She received her B.A. from UMaine in 1927 and M.A. in 1937. She was a teacher of English in secondary schools and a professor of English at UMaine, Auburn. She is author of three books and past President of the Maine Federation of Business and Professional Women.

The collection is composed of research notes, scrapbooks and manuscripts for Ms. Merrill's book on Maine lakes, and some other papers concerning the American Mothers Committee, Toy Len Goon, Mother of the Year, 1953 and class materials for teaching English.
