Mogu And The Unicorn: Frederick May's Music For The Gate Theatre, Mark Fitzgerald Jan 2021

Mogu And The Unicorn: Frederick May's Music For The Gate Theatre, Mark Fitzgerald

Books/Book Chapters

This chapter addresses the contributions that Frederick May (1911-85) made to the Gate's productions of Padraic Colum's Mogu of the Desert (1931) and Denis Johnston's A Bride for the Unicorn (1933). As a young gay Irishman, May had to navigate a cultural infrastructure in which opportunities for composers were scarce, but at the Gate he was given the chance to develop his talents in a new field, as well as to experiment with musical forms in a high-profile setting.

J.K. Mertz’S Bardenklänge: A Context For The Emergence Of The Character Piece Genre Within The Repertoire For Solo Guitar, Brinsley Doran

Masters

Having experience a large increase in concert activity in recent years, one would assume that the works of J.K. Mertz (1806–1856) would haveexperience the same level of attention within academic circles, however research is still limited. As a result, this thesissetsout to understand in what areas do Mertz's works differ fromother guitar works in the first half of the nineteenth century—specifically Mertz's set of character piecesfound in hisBardenklänge, op. 13. This thesiswill address shifts in culture, aesthetics and the increasing interest in the ‘Folk’c.1800–1850 that led to the composition of Mertz’s Bardenklänge. Published in 1847, these works are unique in …

Jane O’Leary And Her Approach To Contemporary Music For Clarinet And Bass Clarinet, Pablo Manjón-Cabezas Guzmán

Research Theses

American-born Irish composer Jane O’Leary is one of the most accomplished participants on the Irish New Music scene. Although trained as a pianist, her career has also been closely linked to the clarinet and bass clarinet through collaborative work she has undertaken with outstanding performers such as Paul Roe and Harry Sparnaay. Thus, this thesis explores this composer’s contributions to the contemporary repertoire for clarinet and bass clarinet.

In order to examine O’Leary’s oeuvre for clarinet and bass clarinet, this research project analyses two of her most remarkable solo pieces for these instruments, Within/Without and a piacere, by determining …

This poster describes new developments in the popular Tunepal project. Tunepal is a query-by-playing music score search engine used primarily by musicians on smartphones in traditional music sessions and classes. Using Tunepal, a musician can quickly identify the name of a melody being played and download the score for later study. Since 2009, there has also been a version of Tunepal that runs in a web browser that allows a musician to play a tune extract and find the name of the tune. Over the summer of 2015, we embarked on a project to redevelop the Tunepal website in HTML5. …

On The Benefit Of Larynx-Microphone Field Recordings For The Documentation And Analysis Of Polyphonic Vocal Music, Frank Scherbaum Jun 2016

On The Benefit Of Larynx-Microphone Field Recordings For The Documentation And Analysis Of Polyphonic Vocal Music, Frank Scherbaum

Papers

In a previous study Scherbaum et al. (2015) have demonstrated that recordings of body vibrations during singing contain all the essential information of a singer ́s voice regarding pitch, intonation, and voice intensity, but are practically unaffected by the voices of other singers (except for extreme situations). This allows the recording of the contribution of each singer while they are singing together. Because of these characteristics, Scherbaum et al. (2015) proposed the utilization of body vibrations recorded as an additional source of information for the documentation and analysis of traditional polyphonic vocal music. Questions remained, however, regarding the applicability of …

Inventing Identities: The Case Of Frederick May, Mark Fitzgerald Jan 2014

Inventing Identities: The Case Of Frederick May, Mark Fitzgerald

Books/Book Chapters

This chapter examines how Frederick May has been depicted in previous musicological literature and the ways in which both biographical facts and May’s music have been misrepresented in an attempt to create the impression that he was part of the main stream of central European modernism. The article uncovers new material regarding the early stages of May’s career and demonstrates that May’s educational trajectory was similar to other pupils of Vaughan Williams. The article counters the narrative of failure created by musicologists who judge May for failing to achieve aesthetic aims that he never set out to attain and reflects …

In Process And Practice: The Development Of An Archive Of Explicit Stylistic Data For Irish Traditional Instrumental Music, Martin Tourish Oct 2013

In Process And Practice: The Development Of An Archive Of Explicit Stylistic Data For Irish Traditional Instrumental Music, Martin Tourish

Doctoral

The study of style in Irish traditional music is very much in its infancy. Although current authors locate its beginnings in the 1980s, valuable information can be found from as far back as the eighteenth century. While style is a much-discussed topic, to date it has not been the subject of a major study. Through what is termed ‘the oral tradition’, much of the genre’s stylistic features are transmitted as implicit knowledge. This type of knowledge is difficult to measure, consciously use and share and while these difficulties have been highlighted in one EU-level report, they are also well known …

Pierrots Fâchés Avec La Lune: Debussy, Fauré And Ravel During World War 1, Arun Rao Sep 2013

Pierrots Fâchés Avec La Lune: Debussy, Fauré And Ravel During World War 1, Arun Rao

Dissertations

This dissertation proposes to consider the music of French composers Claude Debussy, Gabriel Fauré and Maurice Ravel written during the Great War, under tremendous professional, personal and cultural pressures. These pressures are examined largely through these composers’ correspondence and the writings of contemporary critics, composers and artists in the first two chapters; a selection of their output from the war years, in particular their piano works and their chamber music, is the subject of the third chapter. The aim of the dissertation is to reveal certain aspirations common to all three, aspirations that were motivated, dictated even, by the political …

The Influence Of Plainchant On French Organ Music After The Revolution, David Connolly Aug 2013

The Influence Of Plainchant On French Organ Music After The Revolution, David Connolly

Doctoral

The period after the 1789 French Revolution was one of turbulence, musically, socially, culturally and politically. The violence against both people and property meant that the nineteenth century was a time of renewal and regrowth. At all times this was uncertain as numerous political upheavals took place as the French attempted to define their future direction. As with all aspects of culture, organ music experienced a slow regrowth over the course of the long nineteenth century, perhaps being at a particular disadvantage due to its role in the church, an institution which also went through a period of difficulty from …

The Impact Of The Arts On Traveller Education; An Exploratory Study, Bernadette Fagan Jul 2013

The Impact Of The Arts On Traveller Education; An Exploratory Study, Bernadette Fagan

Masters

The aim of this study was to explore the impact that the Arts, (that is the study of visual art, drama, music, dance, creative writing, film and video expression), have on the educational process within Irish Traveller Educational Centres whose students are widely recognised as the most highly marginalised group within Irish society (Ireland, 1995; MacGreil, 1996; Zappone, 2002). Art programmes appear to induce a ‘flow’ state, as identified by Csikszentmihalyi, that he defines as a state of optimal awareness in which the subject becomes lost in the action of the moment and results in a heightened integration and differentiation …

The Sonic Representation Of Mathematical Data, Charlie Cullen Jan 2006

The Sonic Representation Of Mathematical Data, Charlie Cullen

Doctoral

Conveying data and information using non-speech audio is an ever growing field of research. Existing work has been performed investigating sonfication and its applications, and this research seeks to build upon these ideas while also suggesting new areas of potential. In this research, initial work focused on the sonification of DNA and RNA nucleotide base sequences for analysis. A case study was undertaken into the potential of rhythmic parsing of such data sequences, with test results indicating that a more effective method of representing data in a sonification was required. Sonification of complex data such as DNA and RNA was …

Automatic Drum Transcription And Source Separation, Derry Fitzgerald Jun 2004

Automatic Drum Transcription And Source Separation, Derry Fitzgerald

Doctoral

While research has been carried out on automated polyphonic music transcription, to-date the problem of automated polyphonic percussion transcription has not received the same degree of attention. A related problem is that of sound source separation, which attempts to separate a mixture signal into its constituent sources. This thesis focuses on the task of polyphonic percussion transcription and sound source separation of a limited set of drum instruments, namely the drums found in the standard rock/pop drum kit. As there was little previous research on polyphonic percussion transcription a broad review of music information retrieval methods, including previous polyphonic percussion …

Music Copyright Via The Internet, Damian O'Regan Sep 2003

Music Copyright Via The Internet, Damian O'Regan

Masters

This thesis will ask if it is possible to use the Internet as a means of copyrighting music. At present, the Internet is not used for the copyrighting of music and furthermore no studies have been carried out to see if this is feasible. Digital technology is used in the composition, recording, playing and downloading and storage of music and the author will research if and how these existing technologies can work in conjunction with the Internet to create a music copyright system. This thesis will research existing copyright requirements, the current technologies used in music that have potential copyright …

The Flute Music Of Luigi Zaninelli, Julie Martin Maisel Jan 1999

The Flute Music Of Luigi Zaninelli, Julie Martin Maisel

Research Theses

Luigi Zaninelli, born in 1932, currently serves as Professor of Composition and Theory at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. During his tenure there, he has composed more than 150 works. His total output exceeds 300 published compositions and more than 60 unpublished pieces. Zaninelli's compositions involving the flute are a valuable addition to the flutist's solo and chamber repertoire. The music can be performed by advanced high school and college level students and provides access to twentieth-century American flute music. His writing for flute is idiomatic and focuses on the ilmate beauty of the instrument. Through researching flute …
