This research responds to calls to further our understanding of exhibitions in the library context (Rogatchevskaia, 2018; Fouracre, 2015) by exploring the significance of a commemorative exhibition staged in a public library. Employing a qualitative methodology, it centres on the ‘Goodbye Dublin: The War of Independence in the City’ commemorative exhibition, staged by Dublin City Pearse Street Library, between August 14th and October 31st, 2019. The findings show that the commemorative nature of the exhibition appealed to a variety of new, lapsed and frequent library users, connecting with Irish and non-Irish residents, as well as tourists visiting …
Death Of A Local Scene? Music In Dublin In The Digital Age, Caroline O'Sullivan
Death Of A Local Scene? Music In Dublin In The Digital Age, Caroline O'Sullivan
Books/Book chapters
This chapter reflects on the Dublin indie and dance music scenes from 2000 to 2017 and examines the everyday reality of being a musician or DJ and the pathways to becoming a regular performer in Dublin over that same period. In the climate of declining gig attendance, closing venues and music piracy, I trace the digitally shaped economic reality for musicians in Dublin over the period 2000–2017. I extrapolate how musicians have made money to pay for the expense of sustaining a career as a musician, such as equipment and production costs, and I investigate how they earned money to …

Retrieving The Real Frederick May, Mark Fitzgerald
Retrieving The Real Frederick May, Mark Fitzgerald
Articles
Although Frederick May (1911–85) is seen as holding an important position in the history of twentieth-century composition in Ireland, writing about May has been sporadic. There exists no serious biographical study to date and most of the commentary on the music has been superficial and frequently misleading. Utilizing the recently re-catalogued collection of May’s manuscripts in the Manuscripts and Archives Research Library in Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and also libraries and public collections in Cork, the United States, London, the Czech Republic and Vienna as well as a number of private archives, this essay attempts to build a clearer picture …

Victorian pubs of Dublin have played an integral role in the social, cultural and economic history of Ireland’s capital from their early development in the front rooms and parlours of Dublin homes they are one of the most iconic elements of Irish culture. These pubs have always been a strange mixture of tradition and curiosity which forms an integral part of the rich tapestry of Dublin life dating back to their creation nearly 200 years ago. A proud brewing and distilling tradition of these pubs combined with their natural hospitality and sociability, have all contributed to making the pubs of …

Rté Brainstorm: How Do You Create A Pageant For The St Patrick's Day Parade?, Barry Sheehan
Academic Articles
In 2016 and 2017, DIT created pageant pieces for the St Patrick’s Festival parade in Dublin. In the Dublin School of Creative Arts in DIT we designed and fabricated the pageant pieces and, together with students and staff from all across DIT, we performed in the parade. We moved over a hundred people through the city in front of up to 500,000 people, live, with no full-dress rehearsal, never having done it before.
This article from the RTÉ Brainstorm series describes how we did it.

James Joyce's Model Dublin, Barry Sheehan
James Joyce's Model Dublin, Barry Sheehan
Academic Articles
“You are walking through it howsomever. I am, a stride at a time. A very short space of time through very short times of space.” (Joyce,1986, p.31).
James Joyce wrote about Dublin from a position of exile. He created a model Dublin, one in which he mixed people and places, events and activities, real and imagined and combined them into a city that suited his own ends.
This imagined city has been examined remotely in a multiplicity of ways, and by people in a way that the real city has not. One can ask whether it is Dublin at all? …

James Joyce told his friend Frank Budgen. “‘I want’ said Joyce, as we were walking down the Universitätstrasse, ‘to give a picture of Dublin so complete that if the city one day suddenly disappeared from the earth it could be reconstructed out of my book.’” (Budgen, 1960, p.67, 68).
This research looks at the relevance of Dublin to Joyce’s writings and to the relevance of Joyce’s writings to Dublin. It is concerned with the virtual Dublin of Joyce’s writings, the physical manifestation of Dublin over time, and the relationships between them.
Numerous scholars read and analyse the writings of Joyce …

Chapter from Dublin’s Future: New Visions for Ireland’s Capital City, Dr. Lorcan Sirr (ed.), (Dublin: The Liffey Press, 2011).
Dublin’s Future is a collection of essays, which, for the first time, recognises that the future of the island’s largest and most important urban conurbation is about more than the engineering of roads and the colouring of development plans.
Seán Mac Erlaine’s chapter explores the performance of music in Ireland’s capital city, documenting the currently vibrant use of alternative art spaces for niche markets of improvised, experimental and non-mainstream music practice.
Contributors are recognised authorities in their fields. They cross …

The Emergence, Development And Influence Of French Haute Cuisine On Public Dining In Dublin Restaurants 1900-2000: An Oral History, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire
Doctoral
The words Dublin or Ireland do not immediately come to mind when haute cuisine is mentioned. However, two leading French chefs, the brothers Francois and Michel Jammet, opened a restaurant in Dublin in 1901 which, up until its closure in 1967, remained one of the best restaurants serving haute cuisine in the world (Mac Con Iomaire 2005a; Mac Con Iomaire 2006). Haute cuisine was served in many Dublin hotels, clubs and restaurants during the twentieth century and came under similar influences as London and other European cities, moving from the Escoffier orthodoxy to the influence of nouvelle cuisine. This research …
