The significance of a museum collection has changed over the years, in how it is managed and cared for, and how it is viewed by the public. Best practice mandates that professional policies and guidelines be developed to standardize the acquisition, care, and use of all objects or artifacts that are kept within a museum environment. Although human remains are not an exception to these policies, they hold a unique position within museums; standardized guidelines for their care and management are still developing.
