Musical Variations From A Chaotic Mapping, Diana Dabby
Musical Variations From A Chaotic Mapping, Diana Dabby
Diana Dabby
A chaotic mapping provides a technique for generating musical variations of an original work. Thistechnique, based on the sensitivity of chaotic trajectories to initial conditions, produces changes inthe pitch sequence of a piece. A sequence of musical pitches $pi%, i.e., any piece ranging from Bach~or earlier! to contemporary music, is paired with the x-components $xi% of a Lorenz chaotictrajectory. Each pi is marked on the x axis at the point designated by its xi . In this way, the x axisbecomes a pitch axis configured according to the notes of the original composition. Then, a secondchaotic trajectory, whose initial condition …

Intentionally Adrift: What The Pathways Project Can Teach Us About Teaching And Learning, Bonnie Irwin

Recent generations of college students, brought up in a digital world of short bytes of information and nonlinear patterns of reading, often present a particular challenge to professors of text-heavy disciplines such as literature, history, and English. This essay explores recent theories of learning and the scholarship of oral tradition, especially that of John Miles Foley, in an attempt to discover how an understanding of pathways in the oWorld and eWorld can provide us with better ways to teach texts of all types.

The Impact Of Neoliberalism And New Managerialism On Development Volunteering: An Australian Case Study, Nichole Georgeou, Susan Engel
The Impact Of Neoliberalism And New Managerialism On Development Volunteering: An Australian Case Study, Nichole Georgeou, Susan Engel
Nichole Georgeou
Within the large volume of research on aid and development there has been limited study of international development volunteering generally and the ways in which it has been affected by neoliberalism. Development volunteering has undergone a resurgence over the past decade and some new forms of volunteering have emerged, but state sponsored development programs are still a key form. These programs were relatively immune from neoliberal ideas and managerial practices until the early 2000s. An interesting puzzle is why neoliberal principles were operationalised in Australia's volunteering program at the same time as it, and other donor states, softened this focus …

Rethinking Mechanistic Explanation, Stuart Glennan
Rethinking Mechanistic Explanation, Stuart Glennan
Stuart Glennan
Philosophers of science typically associate the causal-mechanical view of scientific explanation with the work of Railton and Salmon. In this paper I shall argue that the defects of this view arise from an inadequate analysis of the concept of mechanism. I contrast Salmon's account of mechanisms in terms of the causal nexus with my own account of mechanisms, in which mechanisms are viewed as complex systems. After describing these two concepts of mechanism, I show how the complex-systems approach avoids certain objections to Salmon's account of causal-mechanical explanation. I conclude by discussing how mechanistic explanations can provide understanding by unification.
Mechanisms, Causes, And The Layered Model Of The World, Stuart Glennan
Mechanisms, Causes, And The Layered Model Of The World, Stuart Glennan
Stuart Glennan
Most philosophical accounts of causation take causal relations to obtain between individuals and events in virtue of nomological relations between properties of these individuals and events. Such views fail to take into account the consequences of the fact that in general the properties of individuals and events will depend upon mechanisms that realize those properties. In this paper I attempt to rectify this failure, and in so doing to provide an account of the causal relevance of higher-level properties. I do this by critiquing one prominent model of higher-level properties – Kim’s functional model of reduction – and contrasting it …
Ephemeral Mechanisms And Historical Explanation, Stuart Glennan
Ephemeral Mechanisms And Historical Explanation, Stuart Glennan
Stuart Glennan
While much of the recent literature on mechanisms has emphasized the superiority of mechanisms and mechanistic explanation over laws and nomological explanation, paradigmatic mechanisms—e.g., clocks or synapses – actually exhibit a great deal of stability in their behavior. And while mechanisms of this kind are certainly of great importance, there are many events that do not occur as a consequence of the operation of stable mechanisms. Events of natural and human history are often the consequence of causal processes that are ephemeral and capricious. In this paper I shall argue that, notwithstanding their ephemeral nature, these processes deserve to be …
Mechanisms And The Nature Of Causation, Stuart Glennan
Mechanisms And The Nature Of Causation, Stuart Glennan
Stuart Glennan
In this paper I offer an analysis of causation based upon a theory of mechanisms – complex systems whose "internal" parts interact to produce a system's "external" behavior. I argue that all but the fundamental laws of physics can be explained by reference to mechanisms. Mechanisms provide an epistemologically unproblematic way to explain the necessity which is often taken to distinguish laws from other generalizations. This account of necessity leads to a theory of causation according to which events are causally related when there is a mechanism that connects them. I present reasons why the lack of an account of …

This article examines the way in which the theology of Jonathan Edwards can contrib- ute to the construction of a Christian approach to ecological ethics that maintains crucial elements of the Christian theological tradition. By way of comparison, the article begins with an examination of the work of Rosemary Radford Ruether, whose approach to dealing with the ecological implications of the Christian tradition diverges sharply from the perspective offered by Edwards, and provides a useful contrast to his approach. The article then turns to an extensive discussion of Edwards’ view of nature and the theology of creation, particularly the relationship …
Decolonisation As Peacemaking: Applying Just War Theory To The Canadian Context, Sam Grey
Decolonisation As Peacemaking: Applying Just War Theory To The Canadian Context, Sam Grey
Sam Grey
For decades now, Canada has been seen as a global exemplar of peacemaking and peacekeeping, yet the troubled relationship between its state and the Indigenous peoples within its borders does little to support this image. There is, in fact, a strong case to be made that the ongoing crisis of Indigenous–settler state relations in Canada is best understood as a protracted war; or more succinctly, as a failure to achieve peace following the initial violence of conquest and colonisation. Accordingly, it makes sense to apply just war theory — a doctrine of military ethics — to the issue. Grounded in …
Teaching Assistants' Self-Efficacy In Teaching Literature: Sources, Personal Assessments, And Consequences, Nicole A. Mills
Teaching Assistants' Self-Efficacy In Teaching Literature: Sources, Personal Assessments, And Consequences, Nicole A. Mills
Nicole A Mills
How do teaching assistants (TAs) perceive their competency as “language” and “literature” instructors? What are the sources and consequences of their self-beliefs? Teacher self-efficacy (TSE) or “the extent to which a teacher believes he or she has the capacity to affect student performance” was explored to gain insight into TAs’ perceptions of teaching competence. This qualitative study evaluated 10 French literature doctoral students’ TSE beliefs to teach literature and their accompanying sources, personal assessments and analyses, and consequences. Results revealed that although the TAs found the graduate program to be highly effective in its formation of literary scholars and language …
