The Black Body As Souvenir In American Lynching, Harvey Young

This essay reads the collection of body parts, in the aftermath of the lynching spectacle, as souvenirs, fetish objects, and performance remains. Along the way, it spotlights the importance of narrative to the souvenir, challenges the notion that performance disappears through an emphasis on its remains, and asserts that embodied experiences of the past can be accessed in the present.

Casey has written this collection of stories/memories using a critical framework of contested social memory. Her accounts throughout the book are based on individual interviews with many of the founding members of Australia’s Indigenous theatre scene. This qualitative approach and framework remains subject to contestation based on the memories of the practitioners. And in fact, this book exemplifies the lack of documentation of Indigenous theatre.

The relationship between dance and technology is often framed as oppositional. Dance engages the body, while technology supersedes it, each being defined and positioned in relation to the human physical body. This paper proposes that the dichotomization obscures the social impact of new technologies. To test this proposition, a somatic framework is utilized to identify the similarities, rather than the differences between dance and technology. This framework serves as a lens to analyze the implications of specific technologies on human development, education and the self.
