The *Vie seint Marcel de Lymoges* presents the life of Saint Martial, who according to legend was baptized in the presence of Jesus Christ, witnessed the resurrection, and shared in the powers granted to the apostles by the Holy Spirit. Sent by his cousin Saint Peter on an evangelizing mission to the French city of Limoges, Martial is responsible for the wholesale conversion of the entire region of Aquitaine.
In the early thirteenth century, Wauchier de Denain translated this text from the eleventh-century Latin *Vita sancti Martialis episcopi Lemovicensis* attributed to Adémar de Chabannes. The *Vie seint Marcel* is one …

In his book entitled, What is Literature?, Jean-Paul Sartre says of literature that, “If you name the behaviour of an individual, you reveal it to him; he sees himself. And since you are at the same time naming it to all others, he knows that he is seen at the moment he sees himself.” It seems that literature, according to Sartre, was a medium in which the writer could expose the subject to himself in a way impossible for him to see on his own-- perhaps a reflection allowing the subject to see himself as others saw him. The project of the “Treaty that establishes a Constitution for the Europe”, beyond its political consequences, puts some challenges to the classical constitutional theory. At first sight, it seems completely heterodox towards canon constitutional tendencies, and first of all in what concerns the constituent power classical theories. However, a more rigorous analysis of the history of the modern constitutionalism and its founding texts, mainly French, can lead us to detect very revealing bridges between the liberal modern constitutionalism of the XVIIIth century and the present constitution making of a codified European Constitution.
