Apollo Hypoakraios Reconsidered, Peter Nulton
Apollo Hypoakraios Reconsidered, Peter Nulton
Peter E. Nulton Ph.D.
In 1897, the excavations of P. Kabbadias uncovered ten votive plaques in a cave on the northwest slope of the Athenian Acropolis, thereby fixing the location of the "sanctuary of Apollo in a cave" mentioned by Pausanias (I.28.4). The inscriptions indicated that they were meant as dedications to Apollo Hypoakraios or Hypo Makrais, and that the dedicants were invariably members of the college of archons. Although the corpus has increased steadily since then, the inscriptions have not been treated together since Kabbadias's original publication.
In this paper, I will offer some conclusions drawn from a thorough re-analysis of the corpus. …

Paragons Of Virtue With Carnal Appetites: The Women In Othello, Much Ado About Nothing, And Antony And Cleopatra, Michele Gibney

A theme that Shakespeare treat several times in his plays is the sexual mistrust of women and their subsequent testing and vindication. It appears that men “perceiving sexuality as power over women, fear its loss through female betrayal,” (VIII, 41). Specifically I am choosing to look at three plays, Othello, Much Ado About Nothing, and Antony and Cleopatra, in order to examine the different ways in which females in these plays, Desdemona, Hero, and Cleopatra, cope with the male insecurities that they are confronted with. In so doing, I hope to point out that Shakespeare’s reasoning in continually bringing up …

Examines the frontispiece miniatures of Los Angeles, J. Paul Getty Museum, MS 64, proposing that the direct reflection of the art patronized by Bishop Bernward of Hildesheim (d. 1022) is a key component in the manuscript's role as a testament to Bernward.

Protecting Communities In Research: Current Guidelines And Limits Of Extrapolation, Charles Weijer, Gary Goldsand, Ezekiel Emanuel
Protecting Communities In Research: Current Guidelines And Limits Of Extrapolation, Charles Weijer, Gary Goldsand, Ezekiel Emanuel

As genetic research increasingly focuses on communities, there have been calls for extending research protections to them. We critically examine guidelines developed to protect aboriginal communities and consider their applicability to other communities. These guidelines are based on a model of researcher-community partnership and span the phases of a research project, from protocol development to publication. The complete list of 23 protections may apply to those few non-aboriginal communities, such as the Amish, that are highly cohesive. Although some protections may be applicable to less-cohesive communities, such as Ashkenazi Jews, analysis suggests substantial problems in extending these guidelines in toto …

Protecting Communities In Research: Philosophical And Pragmatic Challenges, Charles Weijer
Charles Weijer
The issue of the protection of communities in clinical research first arose 10 years ago in studies conducted in technologically developing countries by scientists from technologically developed nations. Blades Of Grass: The Stories Of Lao She, She Lao, William Lyell, Sarah Chen
Sarah W. Chen
"If you want to write good short stories," Lao She once observed, "you have to give it everything you’ve got. The world will allow the existence of a very imperfect novel, but it won’t be that polite with a short story. Art, after all, is not like a pig—the fatter the better." Lao She’s stories proved to be very good indeed, moving and delighting readers for many years and establishing him as a master of classic modern fiction. Thankfully we now have access to a rich collection of his short stories in superb English translations. These stories showcase the varied …
