Recently voted as one of Western New York's most influential people for the twentieth century (Gallivan 1999), the Reverend Dr. [Bennett W. Smith, Sr.] Sr.'s own electoral and political activism clearly emanate from the ethical expressions of the social justice ministry of his late friend and comrade, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. King characterized social justice in terms of "comprehensive social empowerment." He believed that freedom for African-Americans without empowerment (i.e. "Civil Rights"), land and/or other social/economic resources, was not "true" freedom (Walker 1991, 24). Gay Rights As A Particular Instantiation Of Human Rights, Vincent Samar

Contrary to recent claims by some that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) rights are special rights, this article shows that such rights are logically part of what we mean by human rights. It does this both by offering a suitably general understanding of the 1948 UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights and by showing how gay rights claims, in particular, fit within a moral justification for universal human rights. The article proceeds by first defining what gay and lesbian rights are. This is done by showing how many claims made by LGPT people fit within rights discourse generally. An …

Behind The Glare Of The Spotlight: Grassroots Efforts To Integrate Facilities In Jacksonville, Florida 1958-1963, Debbie Owens

The author examines community-based crusades that augmented the collective efforts of national civil rights organizations. This article illuminates the roles of individual contributors to the grassroots and legal struggle for racial equality in Jacksonville, Florida, between 1958 and 1963. An examination of both local and national press coverage of efforts by citizens to integrate public facilities reveals the scope of this grassroots activism, which paralleled the national campaign.
