The Women Theologian And The Ideal Of Christian Wisdom, Sandra Marie Schneiders Oct 1982

The Women Theologian And The Ideal Of Christian Wisdom, Sandra Marie Schneiders

Jesuit School of Theology

Teresa of Jesus, better known as St. Teresa of Avila, was born on March 28, 1515 and died on October 15, 1582, four hundred years ago tomorrow. By any human standards this sixteenth century Spaniard was an extraordinary woman. Despite the restrictions placed on the education and the lifestyle of women in her time Teresa, who entered the cloistered religious Order of Mount Carmel at the age of twenty-one, not only achieved superlatively the ideals of the life she had chosen but virtually single-handedly reformed the feminine branch of the Carmelite Order and cooperated with St. John of the Cross …

Women And Power In The Church: A New Testament Reflection, Sandra Marie Schneiders Jun 1982

Women And Power In The Church: A New Testament Reflection, Sandra Marie Schneiders

Jesuit School of Theology

First, all mollifying rhetoric to the contrary notwithstanding, I regard it as a fact that the male hierarchy and women in the Church are involved in a power struggle, perhaps more serious in nature and far-reaching in consequences than any in the history of the Church. These men are struggling to maintain power over women in order to maintain exclusive power in the institution. A China Diary, William Rewak May 1982

A China Diary, William Rewak

English

When I was first called and asked to be a member of the Catholic University Delegation to China to investigate educational exchange programs, I hesitated. Anything beyond pasta, enchiladas, and roast beef I am immediately suspicious of; and I had heard about the rigors of Chinese travel.

But I was goaded into it by my Jesuit brothers; and I also knew that if I passed up this chance to take …

Conversion To Discipleship, Sandra Marie Schneiders Jan 1982

Conversion To Discipleship, Sandra Marie Schneiders

Jesuit School of Theology

Discipleship is a vocation to which one can never respond in a final and definitive way. It is a call to ongoing conversion, to an ever deeper appropriation of the mystery of Christ. To be a disciple is to incarnate the identity and mission of Jesus in our own personal, historical, and cultural context. For us, then, conversion to discipleship means formation in and for the American Church of the late 20th century.
