The Americanization Of Tsuru Aoki: Orientalism, Melodrama, Star Image, And The New Woman, Sara Ross

This article contextualizes issues of race and Orientalism in the career of Japanese actress Tsuru Aoki within changing representational strategies and ongoing cultural struggles over the public and domestic roles of women in the modern age. According to the author, Aoki's persona blurred the boundaries between Japanese and U.S. identities.

On the occasion of receiving an Honorary Doctor's Degree in Humanities, The Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, Connecticut, November 9, 2005.

The article presents a speech by Archbishop Demetrios of America delivered during the presentation of his Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree at Sacred Heart University, in which he discussed the historic encounter between Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras and Pope Paul VI in 1964, ministry of reconciliation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and the difficulties facing the Ecumenical Patriarchate due to internal governmental conflicts.

The poetry of Lope de Vega has most often been analyzed for its treatment of themes such as love, religious devotion, or autobiographical introspection. However, one other key aspect of his poetry, especially of his longer poetical works (such as his epistolas and eglogas), is the engagement of literature and ethical concerns often related to the art of writing poetry. William James is well-known for arguing that different words which describe the same practical state of affairs are, in fact, equivalent in meaning. This theory of meaning is one important strain of American pragmatism, the movement which remains America’s primary philosophical contribution to intellectual history, and it invites us to consider a unique perspective on the contemporary dialogue between science and religion. Specifically, it raises the question of the necessity of philosophical foundations when there is practical agreement.

Beyond 'Hot Lips' And 'Big Nurse': Creative Writing And Nursing, Sandra Young

This essay describes a special topics creative writing course designed for nursing students, and argues that creative writing strategies work to improve nurses' compositional skills. Also discussed are other potential benefits from creatively writing patients' lives, notably, the blending of arts and sciences, and the ways in which medical schools are encouraging their students to study the humanities, especially literature and creative writing. Without a solid ethical foundation to state governance, the process of developing and implementing sound public policy is weakened. In addition to the crisis of public confidence, which may turn voters away from politics in disgust, political scandals undermine the quality of the policymaking process.

Connecticut needs watertight laws, vigorous oversight, independent voices, and an electoral process that does not pervert the information voters receive. The responsibility of citizens includes not only voting their consciences but pressing their representatives to put the electoral process and policymaking on a cleaner, more transparent foundation.
