Ambassador Between Two Nations: Shakespeare In American Ideology, Nicholas Jaroma

Master's Theses, Dissertations, Graduate Research and Major Papers Overview

The purpose of this thesis was to examine William Shakespeare’s role in American ideology. Utilizing the theoretical approaches of Louis Althusser, Michel Foucault, adaptation and appropriation theories, and Critical Race Theory, I argue that Shakespeare is an integral part of American history and culture by how his works factor into American ideologies, particularly within ideologies focusing on race and colonialism. Specific plays and Shakespeare’s texts are analyzed, and I also follow the literary history of Americans in response to these plays. My first chapter looks at the Revolutionary and early republic eras, with particular focus on John Adams, his son …

The Miracle Worker: The Use Of Historical Research In Theatrical Design, Jessie Darrell Jarbadan

Master's Theses, Dissertations, Graduate Research and Major Papers Overview

This paper chronicles the research, creative process, and design choices behind the costumes I created for the Rhode Island College production of the play, The Miracle Worker, by William Gibson. It is the culmination of my Individualized Master of Arts Program at Rhode Island College.

The program I created focused on the intersection of historiographical procedure with theatrical design practices to create a final design based on a scholarly synthesis of research. My aim was to create a design that was both historically accurate to Boston and Alabama in the 1890s, as well as fulfilling all of the principles necessary …

He, Jessica Bourget

Honors Projects

This small collection of essays addresses the author's relationship to men in her life, in particular her father and stepfather. In "Somewhere Else," she writes about her often changing and unstable relationship with her biological father. She continues this exploration in "What They Don't Tell You" in a different way, addressing her father and mother's relationship and comparing it to an unhealthy dating relationship in her own life. In her last piece, she writes about her stepfather dealing with the death of his brother and simultaneous adoption of his nephew, while also coming to terms with the reality of her …

The Elusive Eastern Film Corporation Of Providence, Rhode Island: Resurrecting A Footnote In Film History, Adam Tawfik Jan 2013

The Elusive Eastern Film Corporation Of Providence, Rhode Island: Resurrecting A Footnote In Film History, Adam Tawfik

Honors Projects

Eastern Film Corporation was a local studio but its films were distributed and screened throughout New England with the exception of Rhode Island. At least twelve of its films, of various genres, which seemed to have generous budgets for size of the studio, have survived. Eastern’s prime years of business were brief, 1915-1917. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the building in 1917 and the expenses it would cost to repair it too high for its original founder, Frederick S. Peck, a wealthy Barrington politician. Nevertheless, the studio staggered on throughout the 1920s.

"Ok, I'M A Teacher Now:" Reading Young Adult Literature In A Teacher Education Program, Brittany Richer

Honors Projects

After taking a young adult literature course as part of my Secondary Education/ English program, I felt I had gained only a limited understanding of the importance of the genre to my future career. In the class, we read several popular young adult texts, learned about their authors, identified censorship issues, and mentioned a few strategies related to the teaching of the texts. Much of the “understanding” related only to future applications in imagined classrooms, which left no room for critical reflection about what we might learn from reading the texts about ourselves as students and teachers. A sense of …

An Opposing Self, Christine M. Gamache Jan 2012

An Opposing Self, Christine M. Gamache

Master's Theses, Dissertations, Graduate Research and Major Papers Overview

People have always been both frightened and fascinated by the unknown, and themes touching on the existence of things beyond human understanding have longevity in the literary arena as well as in popular culture. One such theme is that of the doppelgänger, or double, which has been around for centuries but was first made popular by Jean-Paul’s (Johann Paul Friedrich Richter) work Hesperus in 1795. Due to a resurgence in the nineteenth century in the popularity of Gothic literature, doppelgängers, or variations of this double motif, found their way into some of the most famous works of literature …

Economic Spin-Off From The Arts, Chester Smolski Jun 1982

Economic Spin-Off From The Arts, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"It was the variety of people there that was most noteworthy. There were the construction men, the account executives in their three-piece suits, the poor, the old, the young, the blacks, the Asians, the college professors and the unfortunates who frequent downtown parks and benches."

City Parks Are For People: Viewpoint, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"It has been claimed that urban parks are "the lungs of the city," supplying, as they do, breathing space in a harsh concrete and asphalt enviornment. Parks also provide a sense of nature with trees, grass and flowers in a serene and peaceful setting."

Sight Seers Guide To Providence And Environs, Marlene Lopes, Andrew Davis, Edith G. Alger Jan 1922

Sight Seers Guide To Providence And Environs, Marlene Lopes, Andrew Davis, Edith G. Alger

Publications on Rhode Island College History

Edith Alger’s role at Rhode Island College of Education was that of the spouse of the President, and in that capacity in 1922 she issued an invitation to faculty, an appeal for pictures, poems, and more to introduce newcomers to “the varied charms of Providence.” That compilation, a tongue in cheek Sight Seer’s Guide to Providence and Environs, is presented here, not worn by the donor as suggested by Mrs. Alger, but arranged as I hope she might have wanted it. Not one word has been changed.
