This document is an in-depth analysis of five selections for wind band: Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night, Elliot Del Borgo; Jericho, Jesse Ayers; Sunrise at Angel's Gate, Philip Sparke; Danza Sinfonica, James Barnes and The Engulfed Cathedral, Claude Debussy, transcribed for wind band by Merlin Patterson. These pages contain biographical information on each composer, program notes, formal analysis, musical considerations, and conducting and rehearsal considerations by the author. This document is presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree, Master of Music, and submitted in support of a choral concert conducted by the author on April 28, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church, Mankato, MN. It presents brief biographical information regarding each composer and a conductor's analysis of their compositions performed in the concert. The communication of emotion in music has been shown to be dependent on musical structure and emotional prompting with lyrical messages. This study seeks a new approach to researching the communication of emotion in music by creating musical samples that are based upon the sound wave frequency parameters of emotive speaking. An electronic survey containing six different emotive musical samples was conducted to gather listener interpretations of the intended emotional quality. Further research is needed to properly distinguish the parameters of emotive frequencies in order to provide for exposure of the functionalities of this phenomenon.
