Theology & Religion Online (TARO) is a digital repository consisting of four library collections that focus on Protestant and Catholic doctrine, studies into the historical Jesus, and religion in North America (see Figure 1). It includes newly digitized primary texts by major theologians, multi-volume works, references, e-books, chapters, articles, an image library, peer-reviewed secondary readings on core topics, and commentary on lectionaries. This Christ-focused resource is rounded out with a library covering the diverse religious traditions of North America and the hot topics spawned at the intersection of ethics, social movements, and religion. When we arrived in Huntington, the physician shortage was so extreme that we, who had great medical connections, found it difficult to locate physicians who accepted new patients. We invited the first class of medical students, the Class of 1981, who began medical school in January 1978, their spouses, and all faculty and spouses to our home for an evening of fellowship and food (Appendix 1: The First Graduating Class, the Class of 1981). Plotting change over time through maps allows people to study and reflect on the environment leading to a better understanding of spatial reality. Just like any other primary source, maps are a creation of their social and cultural context conveying certain details while omitting others.

West Virginia’s formation divided many groups within the new state. Grievances born of secession inflamed questions of taxation, political representation, and constitutional change, and greatly complicated black aspirations during the state’s formative years. Moreover, long-standing attitudes on race and slavery held great sway throughout Appalachia. Thus, the quest by the state’s black residents to achieve the full measure of freedom in the immediate post-Civil War years faced formidable challenges.
