Toni Morrison, Oprah Winfrey, And Postmodern Popular Audiences, John K. Young

English Faculty Research

In this essay the author examines the "Oprah Effect" on the career of Toni Morrison, who after three appearances on "Oprah's Book Club" has become the most dramatic example of postmodernism's merger between Morrison's canonical status and Winfrey's commercial power has superseded the publishing industry's field of normative whiteness, enabling Morrison to reach a broad, popular audience while being marketed as artistically important.

Advertising has existed in various forms for centuries. Although it has become almost a science today, marketing to consumers through the use of advertisements has ancient origins. Initially, advertising appeared in vocal form, with town criers and barkers, to a few printed signs, which were dated as far back as the Roman Empire’s advertisements for gladiator events. Historians believe that the first English language advertisement was a handbill created by William Claxton in 1478, for one of the books he printed. These handbills became increasingly sophisticated over time and essentially formed the basis of modem print advertising. Their value in …

On Monday night 12 September 1994 President Francois Mitterrand appeared on French national television to discuss his involvement with the Vichy regime during its early years and in particular his postwar friendship with the former Vichy regime’s Police Chief, Rene Bousquet. Rene Bousquet was charged with crimes against humanity in 1989 for his role in the Final Solution in France and was indicted in 1991. He was assassinated 8 June 1993 and never brought to trial. Mitterrand’s controversial friendships and his television appearance to discuss them are emblematic of ambiguities present in French society surrounding historical memory of the period …

Irish novelist Jennifer Johnston has published twelve novels to date, from The Captains and the Kings in 1972 to The Gingerbread Woman in 2000. Eileen Battersby's recent Irish Times article “Making Sense of Life” called her “the quiet woman of Irish fiction, “ referring to her understated, sophisticated writing style. All of her novels are short (Joseph Connelly and others have called them “novellas”), and she has become known for her ability to describe a complex situation in a direct, compact way.

Black Or White: A Content Analysis Of Newspaper Coverage Dealing With Nba Players & Race, Daniel Eric Newman

A content analysis of The New York Times and The Washington Post was conducted to determine if there were differences in the coverage devoted to African-American and Caucasian players in the National Basketball Association from July 1, 1999, through June 30, 2000.

The study examined 96 randomly chosen articles, 48 from each publication, to determine trends with regard to coverage of each race.

While the hypotheses predicted African-American players would receive more negative coverage than their Caucasian counterparts, the results showed that Caucasian players actually receive slightly more negative coverage.

Determining what the black church sees as its overall mission is my primary concern. Specifically, the research examines the relationship between themes that emerge from black pastor’s personal ministry philosophies, and themes that appear in priestly ministry and prophetic ministry. This study focuses on the dialog between Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso and lays a unique groundwork for instructors in Discipline-Based art education (DBAE). Using two artists, rather than one, it reveals the importance of the basic art elements in a comparative analysis and stylistic variation of both. The art of Matisse and Picasso was intertwined even before their first meeting as it continued to be even after Matisse’s death. This collection consists of copies of the twelve volume court transcript for the case of the State of Ohio vs. William Lemaster, case no. 92-CR-61 in the court of common pleas. Lemaster was accused and convicted of the kidnapping and murder of Jeff Halley and his son Jeff Halley, Jr. The court transcript includes jury selection, exhibits, and testimony.

This collection is composed of the twelve interviews conducted by Carrie Kline as part of her Rockefeller Fellowship with the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Gender in Appalachia on “Appalachian Resiliency in Sexual Minorities.” All interviews have been anonymized, but basic information about the individuals has been retained. Interviewees were southern West Virginians who identified as being gay, lesbian, or transgender and spanned in age from their 20s to their 70s. Materials in the collection use terminology that is now considered outdated and terms used have been updated for inclusion in this finding aid.

The narration covers only briefly the life of Native Americans living on the land that would become West Virginia, but focuses on the settlement of West Virginia by Europeans to the 1920s.
