Born in Hondarribia, in the Basque country of Spain on November 13, 1949, Javier Busto is one of the most recognized composers of that area. This research introduces the composer and his music. The document briefly presents events of his life that promoted his advancement as a composer, with particular attention to his composition "Missa pro Defunctis" (1997). The work was commissioned by the Kobe Chuo Chorus of Japan as a community response to an internationally recognized catastrophe, the terrible earthquake in Kobe, Japan on January 18, 1995. This dissertation analyzes American writing from and about the former British and French colonies in order to critique postcolonial theory and also to establish a new genre of expatriate literature. Focusing on the works of J. P. Donleavy, Edith Wharton, Paul Bowles, and Paul Theroux, I argue that reading these Americans disrupts the binary concepts encouraged by postcolonial theory. This project rethinks important dichotomies such as colonizer/colonized, center/margin, metropolis/margin, civilized/primitive, and white/non-white by examining the ambiguous American character in the postcolonial context. This dissertation is in two parts. The first one is an original composition, Latin Rhapsody for Clarinet and Orchestra. The second is a musical analysis, Magical Realism in Alejandro Cardona’s String Quartet No. 4. Latin Rhapsody for Clarinet and Orchestra uses Costa Rican ideas combined with classical contemporary sonorities, such as clusters and small pitch-class sets. The first movement, Tambito, is based on a Latin American dance rhythm in six-eight meter. The name of this dance is particular to Costa Rica, but it is a widely used rhythmic pattern used in other Latin American countries under other names. This movement …

To study language change within South Louisiana Catholic Church, I examined the sacramental registers of more than 250 churches, the country of origin of 1043 priests, the parish visitation reports of 37 individual churches and 160 original data cards from 1906 Census of Religious Bodies. Metalinguistic elements were collected from various files available at the archives. This study reveals the complex nature of the language switch from French to English, a network structure of top down management and elements of change in each community of practice which pressured the other levels. This dissertation considers the dynamic and resilient influence of the jeremiad, an early American religious and literary mode, on contemporary American literature and culture. It argues that the polemical, dystopian, and apocalyptic narratives so abundant in twentieth-century literature and film participate in an ingrained literary tradition that accounts for society's misfortunes as penalty for its social and moral evils while, at the same time, emphasizing an American exceptionalism born out of a belief in the society's election through its covenant with God. Korean born Isang Yun (1917-1995) was a highly successful composer of Western avant-garde music who infused traditional Korean elements in works composed in a Western musical context. This monograph discusses the use of traditional Korean musical style and performance practices in Isang Yun's Monolog for bassoon, his only solo work for this instrument. Yun draws on a wide variety of East Asian elements for inspiration; from traditional Korean musical stylistic components, genres, and instruments, to Taoist and Buddhist religious philosophy. The primary purpose of this document is to provide a comprehensive performer’s guide to Oskar Morawetz’ From the Diary of Anne Frank. Born in Czechoslovakia in 1914, Jewish composer Oskar Morawetz fled Europe and Hitler’s advancing forces shortly before the start of World War II. He arrived in Canada in 1940 where he established himself as a leading composer. In order to avoid revisiting the associated pain of past tragedy, Morawetz did not read the diary of holocaust victim, Anne Frank until 1967. Ananda Devi's Narrative Strategies And Subversions., Ritu Tyagi

This dissertation proposes a feminist narratological study of texts by Ananda Devi, a contemporary Francophone writer from Mauritius. I examine three principle narrative strategies that allow Devi to challenge the dominant androcentric discourses. These discourses ignore the feminine world of domesticity and impose images of submission on women, thereby curbing feminine expression and quest. Inspired by the efforts of critics such as Alison Case, Robyn Warhol, Susan Lanser to study narrative structures in the context of cultural constructions of gender, I argue that Devi employs narrative strategies that allow her marginalized narrators to intervene in dominant structures of narrative construction …

This dissertation analyzes the texts of contemporary women writers who consciously engage dominant Catholic, American, and southern ideologies in their narratives and who posit Louisiana as a liminal, hybrid space. Building upon postcolonial concepts of hybridity and performance of cultural memory, I trace a “pathway” to feminist recovery and reclamation of ancestral memory and spirituality in Valerie Martin’s A Recent Martyr, Rebecca Wells’ Little Altars Everywhere and Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Brenda Marie Osbey’s All Saints, and Erna Brodber’s Louisiana. This dissertation develops a conceptual history of human anatomy, both as a discipline and as an epistemological model. Building on recent scholarship in the history of science, I argue that the basic organization of anatomical inquiry inspired a number of literary productions during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This project counters important critical trends of the last five decades, which have focused on the ambiguous characterization of an anatomical genre without providing sufficient medical context. I argue that intellectual history reveals a persistent epistemological analogy between the body and textual arrangements of human knowledge. By examining this analogical structure, it …

This document begins by placing the composition of Herminie within the biographical context of Berlioz’s life and musical output. After the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson decision, blacks in the South lost most of the rights achieved during Reconstruction and for over half a century lived in a system defined by disfranchisement and segregation. Plessy promised a “separate but equal” society but by 1920 it was evident that separate was fulfilled but equal fell short in facilities. At about the same time, a three-tiered racial hierarchy, rooted in New Orleans long and distinctive racial history returned. American composer Jake Heggie (b. 1961) gained recognition in 2000 with the premiere of his first opera Dead Man Walking. The success of this musical composition led to subsequent commissions from opera companies across the United States. In 2007, Heggie’s most recent opera, Four Decembers, premiered at the Houston Grand Opera. Heggie is currently working on another opera, Moby Dick, for the Dallas Opera and it is scheduled to premiere in 2010. My work deals with what I call (im)possible encounters, possible (mis)understandings between the West and the Rim of the World (in my case The Maghreb). I focus on writers (such as Paul Bowles, Patricia Highsmith, Edith Wharton, Tayeb Salih, Ahlam Mosteghanemi, Ahdaf Soueif) who stepped across the cultural dividing line to claim a voice of their own; a voice that enabled them to represent and at times misrepresent the host culture they chose to live in, and which acts as a “lieu” and at times “milieu de mémoire.” It is what the late Edward Said aptly called “intertwined histories, overlapping …

This study investigated the effect of rhythm based computer-assisted music instruction designed for individual learning style preferences. Participants were undergraduate preservice elementary education majors (N = 82) enrolled in Fundamentals of Music. The Perceptual Learning Style Preferences Survey and the Diablo Valley College Learning Style Survey were used to measure learning preferences. Two content knowledge assessments were administered as pre and posttest: (a) Music Achievement Test (MAT) Test 2-Part 3-Auditory and Visual Discrimination subtest b and (b) Researcher-Developed Rhythm Test (RDRT). Student attitudes and teacher perceptions regarding creativity, composition, and its assessment possibilities were investigated using mixed-method techniques in two differing high school music programs. A Talented Music Program, providing accelerated instruction to gifted musicians (with composition instruction) and a typical performance based band program (composition never taught) were examined. Students participated in a six-week composition program. Final compositions were evaluated by differing judging groups: teachers, students, and expert composers. Data were collected through interviews, observations, attitude surveys, student and teacher journals, and composition assessment. For composer Chris DeBlasio, the omnipresence of HIV/AIDS during the final years of his life helped to channel his creative energies into a unique compositional voice. At a time when certain elements of the New York music scene rewarded atonality and musical experimentation, DeBlasio pursued a lyrically tonal, theatrically-informed style in the company of composers such as Jake Heggie and Ricky Ian Gordon. A critical approach to understanding the analytical power of realism and its representational claims in the late nineteenth-century is to examine the relationship between realism and a common cultural concern that opposes the very tenets of realism, one that necessarily pervaded all aspects of class, gender, nationality, race, sexual orientation, or other classifiable subsets of society typically linked with various schools of literary theory: the subject of religion. Joseph Messner's Organ Music: Evolution Of A Style, Julie Powell Rozman

Joseph Messner (1893-1969) achieved fame in Europe for his contributions to the sacred concerts of the Salzburg Festspiele following World War II. In his early career, however, Messner earned initial acclaim as a recitalist and renowned improviser on the organ. Messner composed and published several organ works prior to World War II which contain style elements of late-romanticism and an emerging neoclassicism. This paper analyses the works in regards to form, stylistic elements, and performance issues in addition to establishing the historical contexts from which they originated.
