Everything’S For Sale: The Barmaid As A Figure Of Commodity In A Bar At The Folies Bergère, Erin Quirk Dec 2023

Everything’S For Sale: The Barmaid As A Figure Of Commodity In A Bar At The Folies Bergère, Erin Quirk

The Confluence

This paper explores the role of the barmaid in relation to commodity in Édouard Manet’s A Bar at the Folies Bergère during the explosion of mass consumption that helped define nineteenth century Paris modernity. Building upon existing scholarship, I explore the figure’s role as a member of the emerging working class female, a possible prostitute and an advertising device, promoting the bar’s goods, along with the experience of the Folies-Bergère to the city’s inhabitants. This paper includes formal and iconographical analysis of the figure in relation to commodity as well as a cultural analysis of how these representations reflect attitudes …

The Influence Of High Renaissance Art On The Mannerist Movement: Examining Representative Works Of Rosso Fiorentino, Pontormo, And Bronzino, Jana Ondrechen Hallford Dec 2023

The Influence Of High Renaissance Art On The Mannerist Movement: Examining Representative Works Of Rosso Fiorentino, Pontormo, And Bronzino, Jana Ondrechen Hallford

The Confluence

This paper explores the impact of the High Renaissance, led by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael, on the development of the Mannerist movement. Specifically, it examines the ways in which three prominent Mannerist artists, Pontormo, Rosso Fiorentino, and Bronzino, built upon the "ideal" art produced during the High Renaissance.

Through a comparative analysis of works by the "three greats" of the High Renaissance and those of the three Mannerist artists, this paper identifies similarities and differences in style, composition, and subject matter. It also considers broader cultural influences that contributed to the development of Mannerism.

The paper argues that …

Bi-Negativity: An Assessment Of Negativity Surrounding Bisexuality From The Lgbtq+ And Heterosexual Communities, Whitney R. Ford Dec 2023

Bi-Negativity: An Assessment Of Negativity Surrounding Bisexuality From The Lgbtq+ And Heterosexual Communities, Whitney R. Ford

The Confluence

This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that negative attitudes towards bisexual people (bi-negativity) exists within the LGBTQ+ and heterosexual communities and to determine if levels of bi-negativity are higher within the LGBTQ+ group. I administered the Gender-Based Attitudes Towards Bisexuality (GBAB) Scale by Nielsen et al. (2022) to measure bi-negativity using an online survey. The results, obtained from 87 participants who identify as LGBTQ+ and 121 participants who identify as heterosexual between the ages of 18 and 80, support my hypothesis that bi-negativity exists within both groups. However, contrary to my second hypothesis, higher levels of bi-negativity were …

The Farmers Of Phelps County, Jacob F. Rinehart Dec 2023

The Farmers Of Phelps County, Jacob F. Rinehart

The Confluence

As with most things, they’re never fully appreciated until after they’re no longer available. Sitting alone on campus on a cold autumn evening, when asked to write a response about the importance of home, I found myself thinking for the first time in my life about why I enjoyed the remote lifestyle of my childhood to my social urban present. Even after discovering my conclusions, I found it impossible to explain to others my feelings regarding my disdain towards a loud, bright, transient society that they feel is as much of a part of them as my hometown is of …

The Unstoppable Rise Of Ai: An Interview With Dr. John Sanford, Spencer Burrows, And Anna Birchler, Brandon Powell, Spencer Burrows Jul 2023

The Unstoppable Rise Of Ai: An Interview With Dr. John Sanford, Spencer Burrows, And Anna Birchler, Brandon Powell, Spencer Burrows

International Journal of Emerging and Disruptive Innovation in Education : VISIONARIUM

AI can both help and hurt the education field (higher education and secondary education). Despite Hollywood’s depiction of artificial intelligence solely in the form of killer death robots decades into the future, AI is much more versatile - and far more dangerous - than any killer robot could be. As artificial intelligence develops at a breakneck pace, its effect on our society will increase exponentially.
