Dissident Poetry In Post-Crisis Spain: A Challenge To Fluidity, Olga Bezhanova Dec 2020

Dissident Poetry In Post-Crisis Spain: A Challenge To Fluidity, Olga Bezhanova

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The global economic crisis of 2008-9 had an especially severe impact on Spain and resulted in the publication of many works of literature that address the effects and the causes of the crisis. Daniel Macías Díaz and Antonio Rómar, two contemporary Spanish poets, belong to different artistic generations, yet their response to the devastation caused by the economic collapse centers on a rejection of the neoliberal worldview that inspired the creation of the current economic system. The poets question the rhetoric of fluidity and mobility that accompanies the implantation of the neoliberal world order and call for the creation of …

Sueños De Tánger: Extraterritorial Basque Crime Fiction On Immigration To Spain, Shanna Lino

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

As the world increasingly turns its attention to the European refugee crisis and to the 1.8 million who have arrived on that continent since 2014 as a consequence of being forced to flee their native countries’ war-torn cities and villages, questions continue to arise regarding the ethical and political responsibilities of Western nations to facilitate this exodus and to provide refugee and immigration services en route and at destination. Spain remains the intended port of arrival for thousands of Malians, Mauritanians, Moroccans, and Western Saharans who sometimes manage to escape war and extreme poverty only to find themselves stalled on …

When The Bubble Bursts: A Spatial Interrogation Of Spanish Crisis In José Ángel Mañas’ Sospecha, Nick Phillips Jun 2019

When The Bubble Bursts: A Spatial Interrogation Of Spanish Crisis In José Ángel Mañas’ Sospecha, Nick Phillips

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

José Ángel Mañas’s detective novel Sospecha investigates the consequences of the 2008 economic crisis by focusing on the unsustainable development of the Madrid urban area. I argue that the novel’s depiction of the Spanish capital serves as a case study for coming to terms with the identity and effects of crisis. By employing elements of the police procedural, Sospecha creates multiple trajectories through these suburban communities, allowing the novel to trace the impacts of a globalized economic model that presents these spaces as products of consumption. In turn, it is the spatial production of the city’s urban periphery that becomes …

Seeing (As) The Eroticized And Exoticized Other In Spanish Im/Migration Cinema: A Critical Look At The (De)Criminalization Of Migrants And Impunity Of Hegemonic Perpetrators, Maureen Tobin Stanley Jun 2019

Seeing (As) The Eroticized And Exoticized Other In Spanish Im/Migration Cinema: A Critical Look At The (De)Criminalization Of Migrants And Impunity Of Hegemonic Perpetrators, Maureen Tobin Stanley

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

This article examines cinematic perspective in six Spanish im/migration films to show that by resituating the identification from an alignment with that of a hegemonic character (who accepts the systematic bias that confers impunity to perpetrators) to identification with a criminalized migrant subject, these films 1) denounce systemic intersectionality that confers impunity to perpetrators and criminalizes the racialized and/or feminized other and 2) aim at fostering empathy in the hegemonically identified viewer. Parameters for the selection of the six films are: immigration to Spain, African (whether geographic or ethnic) origins, eroticization of the migrant, objectification/(ab)use/commodification/victimization of the Other, criminalization of …

Immigrants And National Anxieties In 21st-Century Spanish Film, Julia C. Barnes Jun 2019

Immigrants And National Anxieties In 21st-Century Spanish Film, Julia C. Barnes

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

This article analyzes the ways that gender and race inform the portrayals of native-born Spaniards and immigrants in Flores de otro mundo (Flowers from Another World) (1999), Un novio para Yasmina 'A Fiancé for Yasmina' (2008), Retorno a Hansala (Return to Hansala) (2008), Biutiful (2010) and 15 años + 1 día (Fifteen Years and One Day) (2013). These films position the white Spanish man at the center of their stories, even when they are not the sole protagonists. Immigrant men of color, in contrast, are most frequently portrayed as parasitical, delinquent, and criminal. White …

Cars, Space, And The Dynamics Of Power In Cuéntame Cómo Pasó ('Tell Me How It Happened'), Linda B. Bartlett

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Cuéntame cómo pasó 'Tell Me How It Happened,' Radio Televisión Española’s long-running television series, recreates Spain’s recent past from the late years of the Franco regime through the transition to democracy and beyond through the daily experiences of the fictional yet typical Alcántara family, thus functioning as a form of historical memory project. This critically-acclaimed program, which debuted in fall 2001, has attracted not only record-size audiences in its 18 seasons (to date), but also scholarly interest as well. While other studies have analyzed the use of the television medium to represent history, or critiqued its historical …

Cernuda In Current Spanish Poetry, Salvador J. Fajardo Jun 2012

Cernuda In Current Spanish Poetry, Salvador J. Fajardo

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The poet Luis Cernuda (Spain, 1902-Mexico, 1963) has left his mark on much of the poetry written in Spain since the sixties. First rediscovered in the Peninsula in the late fifties and early sixties by, among others, Francisco Brines, José Angel Valente, and Jaime Gil de Biedma, his influence became pervasive both through the work of these poets, and, through the reading of Cernuda’s poetry itself, available since 1975 in Harris and Maristany edition. Referring in particular to Biedma, whose impact on younger poets has been significant, this paper examines the presence of Cernuda in certain approaches to language and …

Uses Of A Myth: Al-Andalus, Serafín Fanjul Jun 2009

Uses Of A Myth: Al-Andalus, Serafín Fanjul

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

In the last two decades, the Spanish press treatment of the Muslim world reflects a change of tone from unsympathetic to enthusiastic, although the information is still marred by confusion and ignorance. This change of attitude has occurred in other Western countries as well, and it is due in part to immigration trends, control over oil resources, and the relativism of official discourses towards the Third World. In the case of Spain, however, there is an additional internal element at play: the mass-media reinvention of a mythical al-Andalus as a tolerant and pluralistic society. This idealized interpretation of seven centuries …

The Basque Country: The Heart Of Spain, A Part Of Spain, Or Somewhere Else Altogether, Paddy Woodworth Jun 2009

The Basque Country: The Heart Of Spain, A Part Of Spain, Or Somewhere Else Altogether, Paddy Woodworth

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The Basque Country exhibits contradictory symptoms of good health and chronic internal rupture. A flexible and robust economy and a vibrant cultural life are undermined by opposed senses of identity, which make almost any statement about the region deeply contentious. The verifiability—or otherwise—of Basque nationalist and Spanish nationalist readings of Basque history and culture matter less today than the fact that they are held with genuine conviction by big sectors of Basque society. Both traditions have their own legitimacy, but neither has been capable of fully acknowledging or including the other. Paradoxically, Francoism reinforced Basque nationalist identity, and anxieties about …

Spain, Reincarnated: Julio Medem’S Caótica Ana And New Spanish Media(Tion) In The World, Susan Martin-Márquez Jun 2009

Spain, Reincarnated: Julio Medem’S Caótica Ana And New Spanish Media(Tion) In The World, Susan Martin-Márquez

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Spanish director Julio Medem’s visually stunning yet controversial 2007 film Chaotic Ana was panned for its ostensibly Manichaean treatment of gender relations and its crudely scatological ending, both of which have distracted attention from the work’s fascinating incursions into global politics. While the film’s complex layering of hawk and dove imagery figures centuries of male violence against women, it is also imbricated with an extended meditation on the divergent roles of the United States and Spain on the contemporary world stage. Through the male protagonist Said, a Saharawi painter, the film artfully shifts postcolonial guilt for the fate of the …

A Vindication Of The Spanish Mother. Maternal Images In The Filmic Make-Over Of The Nation, Andrés Zamora Jun 2009

A Vindication Of The Spanish Mother. Maternal Images In The Filmic Make-Over Of The Nation, Andrés Zamora

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The maternal figure as an explicit or oblique image of the Spanish nation has undergone a good share of indignities throughout the modern cultural history of the country, from the nineteenth-century Mater Dolorosa to the stepmother of those forced into exile after the civil war, from the terrible matriarchs of Benito Peréz Galdós, Federico Garcia Lorca and Camilo José Cela to the patriarchal mothers of Spanish oppositional cinema in the final phase of the dictatorship and first years of the democratic transition. This latter avatar of the Spanish mother, so well reconstructed by Marsha Kinder, had the bewildering destiny of …

Introduction: Rethinking Spain From Across The Seas, Jill Robbins, Roberta Johnson Jan 2006

Introduction: Rethinking Spain From Across The Seas, Jill Robbins, Roberta Johnson

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

For much of the twentieth century, critical studies of "Peninsular Spanish Literature" largely followed a generational paradigm that stressed the peculiarities of Spanish history and texts written by Spanish men in the Castilian language, thereby circumscribing the literary within the boundaries of a specific form of national identity...

Orphans Of The Motherland: Puerto Rican Images Of Spain In Jacobo Morales's Linda Sara , Wadda C. Ríos-Font Jan 2006

Orphans Of The Motherland: Puerto Rican Images Of Spain In Jacobo Morales's Linda Sara , Wadda C. Ríos-Font

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Puerto Rican identity has been confounded by Puerto Rico's prolonged colonial relationship to Spain (nearly 80 years longer than that of most other Latin American colonies) and its abrupt change in status to that of United States protectorate in 1898 after the Spanish American War. Increasingly, Puerto Rican identity has been theorized in sole reference to the political relationship with the United States. The residual presence of Spain and Spaniards in the construction of the new Puerto Rican collective, and the denial or nostalgia that might still be elicited by the former empire, have gradually receded into the background. Perhaps …

Carmen Nestares's Venus En Buenos Aires: Neocolonialist Cyber-Romance, Virtual Lies, And The Transatlantic Queer , Maite Zubiaurre Jan 2006

Carmen Nestares's Venus En Buenos Aires: Neocolonialist Cyber-Romance, Virtual Lies, And The Transatlantic Queer , Maite Zubiaurre

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Carmen Nestares's novel Venus en Buenos Aires (2001) chronicles a transatlantic lesbian love affair between a Spaniard and an Argentinean that begins in cyber-space and culminates in reality. At first, the novel reads "innocently" as an uncomplicated cyber-romance fiction, but once the romance becomes physical after the lovers meet on Latin American soil, certain unsettling elements arise. Online, the Spanish and Argentinean cultures, supposedly "united" by the same language, seem to intermingle easily and graciously, but offline, they are more conflicted, as the Spanish lover adopts a neocolonialist stance. From a distance she considers Argentina a land of capitalist promise …

"Soy Tú. Soy Él": African Immigration And Otherness In The Spanish Collective Conscience, Michael Ugarte Jan 2006

"Soy Tú. Soy Él": African Immigration And Otherness In The Spanish Collective Conscience, Michael Ugarte

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The commonly heard statement "Spain is different" contains a series of contradictions, paradoxes, and questions concerning Iberia's place within the global community, a community that is itself deeply contradictory—more and more the same and yet more and more fragmented. Immigration highlights the sameness/otherness dichotomy in Spanish culture, and the situation of African immigrants has especially caused the Spanish national consciousness an ethical quandary. Here I examine four recent cultural representations of African immigration in Spain—two journalistic works: Mikel Azurmendi's Estampas del Ejido and Antonio Elorza's articles in El País; and two documentary films: Básel Ramsis's El otro lado: un …

Antonio Banderas: Hispanic Gay Masculinities And The Global Mirror Stage (1991-2001) , Joseba Gabilondo Jan 2006

Antonio Banderas: Hispanic Gay Masculinities And The Global Mirror Stage (1991-2001) , Joseba Gabilondo

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Here I map out the Atlantic intertwining between neo-liberal/neo-imperial Spain and cinema by analyzing Antonio Banderas's body politics as the postmodern (post- or neoimperialist) Don Juan. Banderas's career trajectory from 1991 to 2001 coincides with larger political and historical developments. He arrived in Hollywood in the early 1990s, a moment when different but interconnected historical events came together— the end of the Cold War and the neo-liberal globalization of the United States with treaties such as NAFTA and GATT; the growing public profile of the fundamentalist religious right and gays; and the mainstream population's (unwilling) acceptance of Latinos as a …

The Construction Of History In The Folds Of Family History In The Novel Song Lost In West Buenos Aires By María Rosa Lojo, Zulema Moret Jun 2002

The Construction Of History In The Folds Of Family History In The Novel Song Lost In West Buenos Aires By María Rosa Lojo, Zulema Moret

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The novels written by María Rosa Lojo strongly reflect a specific preoccupation with the rewriting of history from new perspectives that are related to so-called postmodernism. This is the case with Canción perdida en Buenos Aires al Oeste (1987). This work attempts to articulate a reading of the "private" at a crossroads with the history of the country and of other countries (Argentina/Spain). It is a novel of exiles, from the exile of the Neira family from the Franco dictatorship in the forties to the particular exiles of each family member during the seventies and eighties in Argentina. From the …
