Anna Julia Cooper: Standing At The Intersection Of History And Hope, Shannon L. Eickhoff
Educational Considerations
Anna Julia Cooper transcended her historical place in time to become one of the most important examples of early resistance to intersectional oppression. Her seminal work, A Voice from the South (1892), articulates her feminine viewpoint on philosophy, social policies, religion, and the status of Black women’s education. Often using the language of the oppressor, Cooper’s acute wit and brilliant use of rhetorical devices allowed her to express herself in spheres of influence where she might otherwise have been silenced. While oral history has been demonstrated to hold potential as a more engaging and rigorous alternative to textbook-centered instruction, it has also failed to replace textbooks as the mainstream methodology in high school classrooms. Here, the author presents oral history data from Jim Walch, a WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War veteran who “retired” as a Red Cross emergency relief worker as well as sample classroom activities derived from that data. The objective is that these sample activities may be received as more approachable than traditional oral history methodology to secondary teachers who are accustomed to textbook-based instruction. A committee of representatives from several universities in the U.S. East Coast, called the Intercollegiate Commission on Academic Costume, standardized the American system of academic costume in 1895. The keystone of the standards was the hood, in its shape, edging, and colours. This article looks at changes to the colours assigned to degrees and areas of study from 1962 through the present. Charts showing when the colours started, and in some cases stopped, being used make up the appendices.

Academic headwear, partticularly in the form of the square cap or mortar-board, is perhaps the most widely recognised symbol of educational achievement in the world. This article surveys the current practice of wearing academic caps of all types at graduation ceremonies in UK universities, to understand whether there are common factors in the use or disuse of headwear, and thus tentatively to explain the wide variation in practice that is seen in the twenty-first century.

This paper charts the development of the distinctive academic costume worn by undergraduate members of England’s second oldest university, Cambridge. It follows the evolution in undergraduate academic dress from differentiation based upon social class and wealth (and regulated as such by the University) to one of differentiation, in most historical cases at least, by the college of which undergraduates are members, about which the University’s only current stipulation is that gowns should be knee-length.

This is a study of a one-page manuscript in the Oxford University Archives with the title ‘Different Forms of Gowns for All Sorts of Scholars in their Several Ranks’, dated June 1635. It was clearly written in connection with the Laudian Code of statutes, which was drafted in 1634 and adopted in 1636. The Code included regulations on university dress and its use at Oxford that would remain in force for 134 years. The document gives a concise specification for Oxford gowns at a time when other written records providing such detail are lacking and pictorial evidence is sparse. This …

A Grave Decent Gown: The 1690 Glasgow Gown Order, Neil K. Dickson

In 1690 the University of Glasgow ordered gown for two of its officers, the invoice for which is in the University’s archives. This article relies on the document to examine the designs of the gowns in details, to see how they influenced academic dress at the University to the present day, and to understand the political statement they made at the time, when newly appointed officers were seeking to exercise their authority in the context of a changed national political scene.

Among the multitude of lettered discourses employed to communicate Latin America’s marvels during the conquest, the chronicle constituted a particularly effective option. That is, its necessary framing for a Spanish or Portuguese courtly audience with heterogeneous contents mixing history and fiction allowed for a text that served to validate personal service to the crown. Part and parcel of these chronicles’ objectives, of course, consisted of portraying an indigenous population supposedly anxious to accept the work load of the encomienda as well as the Catholic conversions that accompanied this legislated slavery. Indian Americans have managed to become one of the most successful minority communities in the United States. With the rise of politicians such as Kamala Harris, Nikki Haley, and Bobby Jindal, Indian Americans have also reached the upper echelons of U.S. political life. Yet half a century ago, a very different picture emerges. Coming to the U.S. just three years after the 1917 Immigration Act which effectively barred Asian immigration, Dalip Singh Saund progressed from student to citizen to the U.S.’s first Asian Congressman over a period of thirty-six years. Act Naturally: Francis Ponge's Morals And Measures Of Human Nature, Hugh Hochman

This article explores how a poetics of the nonhuman in the work of Francis Ponge underwrites a humanism wherein we no longer have to take sides in the conflict between the linguistic projects that tend toward subordination or comprehension of the nonhuman and the resistance that the nonhuman endlessly opposes to these projects. Close readings of texts that figure the defeat of reason in its linguistic expression of the nonhuman, as well as texts that figure human comportment in nonhuman tropes, reveal an ethical project of human well-being acting in agreement with its nature.

The Case Of The Dream Maker: Perec, Pontalis, And Dream Writing, Aubrey Gabel

This article considers Georges Perec’s La Boutique obscure as a literary experiment in dream writing, by putting it in dialogue with French Freudianism, notably the clinical papers of J.-B. Pontalis, Perec’s long-time psychoanalyst. Pontalis describes a patient type, the "dream maker,” who provokes an extreme case of counter-transference and requires new methods in dream therapy. Pontalis, like many of Perec’s literary critics, was suspicious of the authenticity of Perec's dream journal and denied it both therapeutic and literary status. This article reinserts La Boutique obscure into Perec’s literary program. Through a discussion of the text's formal attributes and its sociological …
