Imaginative Geography, And The Perspective Of The Other In Russian Literature, Joshua Wansley '01 May 2001

Imaginative Geography, And The Perspective Of The Other In Russian Literature, Joshua Wansley '01

Honors Projects

In 1839, the Prince Odoevsky wrote a piece of fantasy, entitled The Year 4338. It was a surrealist forecast of a distant future, and was narrated by the "voiceless one," who purports to be a Chinese student writing from Russia. The world has been divided chiefly between Russia and China in the year 4338. The English have long diminished in strength, and the Americans have auctioned their cities "on the public market," in fact the latter are the only benign menace in this utopian future. Love of humanity is so prevalent that all misfortune has been removed from even literature. …

Code-Switching In The Hispanic Community Of Bloomington, Illinois: A Case Study, Rachel Dziallo Apr 2001

Code-Switching In The Hispanic Community Of Bloomington, Illinois: A Case Study, Rachel Dziallo

Honors Projects

This present case study of code-switching is a quasi-replication of Valdes' (1976) research on code-switching patterns, in which one individual is studied in various conversational situations. In the study carried out by Valdes, the focus was on the presence of code-switching patterns in different situations in order to determine the significance of one native speaker with various interlocutors. By realizing this study she concluded the following: (1) the use of code-switching by the principal infonnant does not suggest a lack of language skills; (2) bilingual speakers take full advantage of rhetorical devices to dramatize their speech; (3) regularity of patterned …

Unity Before Orthodoxy: An Investigation Into Second And Third Century Resurrection Theologies, Sharon L. Stowe '01 Apr 2001

Unity Before Orthodoxy: An Investigation Into Second And Third Century Resurrection Theologies, Sharon L. Stowe '01

Honors Projects

This paper will explore three aspects of the previously named theologians (and Marcion, whose ideas are recorded only in others' texts): analogies the author uses to illustrate his resurrection ideas, opponents the text addresses, and as a result of these, the resurrection theology the author purports. Analogies will be studied for the purpose of later demonstrating the unity of those who supported the physical resurrection. The similarities in their language and analogies is in stark contrast to the lack of similarities in the analogies used by those who support a spiritual resurrection.

Second Language Acquisition And Its Practical Application: Evaluating French Textbooks At The Secondary School Level, Jacelyn O'Roark '01 Apr 2001

Second Language Acquisition And Its Practical Application: Evaluating French Textbooks At The Secondary School Level, Jacelyn O'Roark '01

Honors Projects

A textbook is an essential starting point for education in a foreign language classroom. That is why it is so crucial that teachers take the time to consider a text extensively. There are multiple textbooks on the market for secondary French teachers from which to choose. What makes a textbook more appropriate for one teacher or one class of students than another? I believe that we must start by looking at some of the information that is available that explains how students learn a second language. Then, it is important to consider some of the ways that the teaching of …

Campaigning In America: Captain Johann Ewald's Hessians In The American Revolution, Gregory D. Bereiter '01 Apr 2001

Campaigning In America: Captain Johann Ewald's Hessians In The American Revolution, Gregory D. Bereiter '01

Honors Projects, History

At a time when it would seem that all historical evidence concerning the American Revolution has been unearthed, history has surprised us yet again. In the aftermath of World War II, a journal, unknown except to a few, which had been kept by Captain Johann Ewald, a company commander in the Hessian Field Jager Corps, was procured by an American historian assigned to intelligence and historical duties in the United States Zone of Occupation in Germany. After 30 years of piecing together the journal's scattered volumes, translating and editing, the journal was at last published in 1979, and now stands …

Trembling For The Nation: Illinois Women And The Election Of 1860, Erika Rozinek '01 Jan 2001

Trembling For The Nation: Illinois Women And The Election Of 1860, Erika Rozinek '01

Honors Projects, History

On November 1, 1860, America was five days away from the election that would decide the next President, and ultimately, the fate of the nation. In Illinois, emotions ran high, and citizens had regularly turned out at political gatherings in full force to endorse their presidential favorite. Both Democrats and Republicans were confidant that the election of their candidate would save the Union, and the election of the opponent would plunge the country into civil war. In Springfield, Illinois Republicans hosted a mass meeting to rally the supporters of Lincoln in the upcoming presidential election and to intimidate the "terror …

The Urban Response To The Rural Land Reform During The Chinese Civil War: 1945-1949, Elizabeth Grad '01 Jan 2001

The Urban Response To The Rural Land Reform During The Chinese Civil War: 1945-1949, Elizabeth Grad '01

Honors Projects, History

China's internal condition immediately following the end of Japanese occupation was complicated and precarious. The conflicting interests of the Kuomintang and the Communists were pushing the nation into civil war and pressure from the United States only hastened the collapse of an already weak: internal structure. The Japanese occupation of China during the war had significant implications and affected the political fortunes of the Kuomintang and the Communists in diverse ways.

Initially, the War of Resistance against Japan promoted nationalism and Chiang Kai-shek and the Chinese Communists united for the good of the nation. This unity, however, was short lived …

Cabaret: The Design And Production Process, Jennifer J. Owen '01 Jan 2001

Cabaret: The Design And Production Process, Jennifer J. Owen '01

Honors Projects

The textbook definition of initial design work breaks down the process into seven basic steps: commitment, analysis, research, incubation, selection, implementation, and reflection. Though it is obvious that a realized design is not as simple as this breakdown, the definition provides a useful starting point for conversation about design. It is important to note that though this model makes the design process appear linear in nature, each of the steps in the process occurs throughout many different phases of the design. I will refer this definition of the design process throughout my discussion of Cabaret.
