Critical Autism Studies: The State Of The Field, Sonya Freeman Loftis
Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture
In this essay, I attempt to define critical autism studies and to provide a brief survey of some of the major work done in this field so far. I hope my discussion gives a sense of the robust strength of this ever-growing field and also a glimpse of some of the key issues being discussed within the field right now.

Whether they are secret or whether they are household names, identities are paramount in superhero comics. Yet those that create these identities do so from a place of privilege in a hierarchy which results in inauthentic characters and repetitive plots. For the superhero genre, the misrepresentation of female characters (perhaps related to a severe underrepresentation of female creators) has resulted in highly patriarchal storylines that are reductive, stereotypical, and often violent toward women. This rarely considered insight, I argue, is important as in recent decades there have been a growing number of calls for instructional material that meets the language and literacy development needs of second language speakers and writers. By generating …

The languages that we use are a result of our identities and the social contexts and related roles in which we participate. The language practices of one small community of ethnic Nepali-Bhutanese who were revoked citizenship in Bhutan, expelled into refugee camps in Nepal for nearly twenty years, and who now reside in Grand Haven, Michigan were of interest here. Identity, Language Practices and Ideologies among Nepali-Bhutanese in West Michigan builds on previous research that examines the relationship between language choice and socio-cultural factors such gender, age, language proficiency, education, citizenship, and context among multi-lingual speakers (Baquedano-López 2009, Booth 2009, …

My project is a series of creative non fiction writing which ranges from small bodies of writing that explore a simple idea or a simple moment to larger essays that contemplate more complicated ideas. The writing attempts to expand on the definition of the personal narrative within the genre of creative non-fiction by juxtaposing personal experience and research to demonstrate what Sandell Morse insists is desired: “Creative non-fiction seems to be filling a universal craving for what is theoretically true… Yet, something insides us craves a reality closer to home.”
