The Church In The Postmarriage Society, Shawn P. Mcconaughey Dec 2001

The Church In The Postmarriage Society, Shawn P. Mcconaughey

Doctor of Ministry

Pastors hear the same story too many times. The faces are different, and the circumstances have new twists, but the story of another marriage breaking apart is too familiar. The consequences are always the same, a ripping and tearing apart of a family. There are wounded hearts, crushed self-esteem, and plenty of blame to go around. The frustration is that those people breaking up are Christians. Often they are a part of the church, and in many cases the church or their faith didn't seem to be a part of the equation for making a decision to divorce. Many do …

Wesley, Whitefield, A Philadelphia Quaker, And Slavery, Irv A. Brendlinger Oct 2001

Wesley, Whitefield, A Philadelphia Quaker, And Slavery, Irv A. Brendlinger

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

What went wrong? Why did Wesley respond so positively to Benezet's influence and bring a huge number of his followers to bear witness against slavery, yet Whitefield acquiesced to the prevailing view of his age? While we may never know all the answers to these questions, it is possible to trace the thinking of the two men and even read Benezet's evaluation and conclusion on Whitefield's slavery position.

The Death Of Postmillennialism In The Holiness Tradition Following World War I, Tiffany Enos Jun 2001

The Death Of Postmillennialism In The Holiness Tradition Following World War I, Tiffany Enos

Seminary Masters Theses

Millennialism is an ancient component of religion, taking shapes and forms that vary widely from culture to culture, yet sharing enough in common that historian Frederic Baumgartner can describe an end-time scenario that sounds too familiar to be a generalization, even as it slides easily into the faiths of Buddhists, Aztec Indians, Jews, Muslims, and Christians alike. 1 Over the centuries, generation after generation has found reason to believe theirs would be the last, and several millennial groups have risen with fervor and conviction, only to see the promised end time come and go, and life carry on without them. …

The Future Of Theological Education Within The European Baptist Federation, Karl Heinz Walter

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

If we speak about theological education in Europe, we still have to see this in the East - West context or conflict. I am aware that if I have to generalize you will have a lot of exceptions. But nevertheless I want to try to draw a line to where we are today and of course I want to reflect on the fifty years of the existence of International Baptist Theological Seminary (IBTS) and what has happened since the war. In the second part I want to give you some examples about issues which I think shall be the focus …

Expectations Of Iconographic Symbols In Third Century Christianity, David Corbet Apr 2001

Expectations Of Iconographic Symbols In Third Century Christianity, David Corbet

Doctor of Ministry

Art is the avenue down which one moves to encounter the divine. It is the expression of a person's or groups spiritual experience. Through art the divine and the human meet. Within the framework of art, there are different means of expression. A symbol serves as a pointer, directing the audience towards the divine. Figurative expression depicts scenes from religious history, which carries meaning to the audience about their tradition and their history. Narrative expressions tell a story with significance to the religious community. Every religion has some type of artistic expression. This is how a religion demonstrates its own …

Y2k, The Apocalypse, And Evangelical Christianity: The Role Of Eschatological Belief In Church Responses, Lisa Graham Mcminn Jan 2001

Y2k, The Apocalypse, And Evangelical Christianity: The Role Of Eschatological Belief In Church Responses, Lisa Graham Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Department of World Languages, Sociology & Cultural Studies

Apocalyptic beliefs in Christianity have endured for two thousand years and on occasion have motivated and justified radical and even revolutionary collective action (Boyer 1992). Why apocalyptic visions are part of some Christians' belief system is grounded in their beliefs about the end times, or eschatologies, that shape church cultures and subsequent behaviors. This paper considers cultural aspects of collective action, applying the concept of frames that give events meaning and inspire and legitimize collective behavior to Christian church responses to Y2K as a recent example of an anticipated apocalyptic event. Five interpretive frames linking eschatological ideation with specific collective …

Mental Health Needs And Resources In Christian Communities Of South Korea, Lisa Graham Mcminn Jan 2001

Mental Health Needs And Resources In Christian Communities Of South Korea, Lisa Graham Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Department of World Languages, Sociology & Cultural Studies

In an effort to understand the mental health needs and resources of Korean Christians, we collected quantitative and qualitative data through surveys and interviews with Korean pastors and Christian educators. Several mental health concerns were identified: the high level of daily stress faced by many Koreans, marriage and family concerns, conflicts between Korean culture and the teachings of the church, and a tendency to keep emotional discomfort suppressed. Mental health resources include deep spiritual commitment to a life of prayer, high levels of commitment to family and community, cultural values of persistence and patience, and reliance on Christian communities for …
