Book Review Of Doug Frank's Gentler God, Melanie Springer Mock
Book Review Of Doug Frank's Gentler God, Melanie Springer Mock
Faculty Publications - Department of English
Excerpt: "Like most people, my understanding of God’s image and character has been transformed over time: in my case, from the bearded old white man of Sunday school lore, giving judgment from atop fluffy clouds, to a much more inclusive—and, to be honest, more ambiguous—deity, whose being is neither male nor female, bearded nor white. One aspect of God has remained fairly constant, however. I too often believe God to be a vindictive figure, eager to smack me down. Miss church a few Sundays in a row? Something bad is bound to happen. Say one too many swear words? God …

Book Review: A Journey With Two Maps: Becoming A Woman Poet, Kathleen A. Heininge
Book Review: A Journey With Two Maps: Becoming A Woman Poet, Kathleen A. Heininge
Faculty Publications - Department of English
For those familiar with Eavan Boland's book, Object Lessons, her latest defense of the woman poet begins in well-traveled territory. A Journey with Two Maps: Becoming a Woman Poet) reiterates her struggles to find an authentic voice in a poetic and political history that has largely excluded the voices of women. She again notes her sense of dislocation-Irish but not raised in Ireland-and recognizes the effect of such dislocation on her participation in the project called Irish poetry. She repeats her observation that poetry has traditionally been confined to the recondite, defined as war, death, and God, a definition excluding …

What Is In A Name? The Hermeneutics Of Authorship Analysis Concerning Colossians, Nijay Gupta
What Is In A Name? The Hermeneutics Of Authorship Analysis Concerning Colossians, Nijay Gupta
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Pauline scholars, especially in the last century, have been almost evenly divided on whether they consider Colossians to be genuinely written by Paul or by someone else in his name. Through an exploration of the commentaries of eight key scholars on Colossians, this study examines the hermeneutics of authorship analysis in order to determine the key factors involved and how they are weighed. For the study of the authorship of Colossians to move forward in a productive way, a number of yet-understudied issues must be addressed and closely researched. In the meantime, tentativeness in conclusions is the most reliable stance.

Becoming An Old Woman (In The West) (From Dirt And The Good Life), Lisa Graham Mcminn
Faculty Publications - Department of World Languages, Sociology & Cultural Studies
Excerpt: "I turned 53 this summer. To anyone over, say, 63, that will sound young enough. To those younger than about 43, I will seem old-ish, and I'll be so old to those under 20 that the nice ones will treat me with gentle kindness for fear that I might break and the rest will see me as irrelevant and/ or invisible."

Reformed Political Theory In The American Founding (Chapter Two Of Roger Sherman And The Creation Of The American Republic), Mark David Hall
Reformed Political Theory In The American Founding (Chapter Two Of Roger Sherman And The Creation Of The American Republic), Mark David Hall
Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics
This chapter provides an overview of the Calvinist world into which Sherman was born and raised. It offers an introduction to Reformed political theory, and sketches its transmission from Europe to America. It considers and rejects the possibility that the founders were significantly influenced by a secularized Lockean liberalism. It concludes by demonstrating, contrary to assertions by many scholars, that Sherman was a serious Calvinist.

Book Review Of Gearon, Liam: On Holy Ground - The Theory And Practice Of Religious Education, Ken Badley
Faculty Publications - College of Education
Excerpt: "With On Holy Ground, Routledge adds a thoughtful and welcome volume to its growing list of titles related to religious education and Christian education .Gearon begins by taking his readers on a sobering tour of the rejection of the sacred, which rejection he views as the root of the modern project .After making stops at Darwin, Kant, and Marx, Gearon notes that religious education in the modern period requires 'a close reading of the texts of modernity' (p. 4). While Gearon does not burden his readers with too many details of such a reading, he does provide evidence …

Book Review Of Shortt, John's Bible-Shaped Teaching, Ken Badley
Faculty Publications - College of Education
Excerpt: "What might it mean for Christian teachers to have their work shaped by the Bible? What might it mean for people who name Christ to have their whole lives shaped by the Bible, regardless of their profession? John Shortt wants to answer these questions in his accessible book, Bible Shaped Teaching .Shortt addresses his readers directly with the expository prose his readers will likely expect, but he seamlessly incorporates stories and even builds his answers around stories .This book is not about how to teach, but teachers who read it and take it seriously will likely view their teaching …
Book Review Of Ronald B. Hoch And David P. Smith’S Old School, New Clothes: The Cultural Blindness Of Christian Education, Ken Badley
Faculty Publications - College of Education
Excerpt: "In Old Schoo; New Clothes, Hoch and Smith accuse Christian schools of being blind to the forces and forms of modernity, in fact not only blind, but founded on the very same principles as public schools. This cultural blindness extends to the institutions that train Christian school teachers, to administrators, teachers and parents. Hoch and Smith want to explore the roots of this widespread cultural blindness and its effects, and they want to point to ways forward."
Grace (Chapter One In Faithful Teaching: Values And Themes For Teaching, Learning, And Leading Purposeful And Principled Education), Amy Lynn Dee
Faculty Publications - College of Education
Excerpt: "There was a large coatroom in the back of the class, perfect for storing the boots and coats required in the winter days of my third year in school. It also served as a great place to hide if math was not of particular interest. Mrs. Callahan, realizing she was missing a difficult and resistant math student, kept teaching as she made her way to the door of the coatroom to take the hideaway, Arthur, by surprise. She pushed the door open, and as she entered to sweep aside the hanging coats in order to reveal the missing student, …
Book Review: Cross Purposes: Pierce V. Society Of Sisters And The Struggle Over Compulsory Public Education, Amy Lynn Dee
Book Review: Cross Purposes: Pierce V. Society Of Sisters And The Struggle Over Compulsory Public Education, Amy Lynn Dee
Faculty Publications - College of Education
Excerpt: "Contradicting the unappealing cover and stodgy title, Abrams has crafted an engaging and revealing narrative connecting politicians, Klansmen, Masons, the Vatican, educators, parents, and citizens into an account that borders on intrigue but also elucidates and interprets the birth and defeat of a movement that resulted in landmark legislation. The book moves far beyond an explanation of Pierce v. Society of Sisters and provides an inside look at the major players and the motivations behind the Oregon School Bill. Readers witness the unbridled bigotry and hubris of the individuals supporting the School Bill in the early 1900s in Oregon …

Spiritual Well-Being Scale: Mental And Physical Health Relationships (Chapter 48 Of Oxford Textbook Of Spirituality In Healthcare), Raymond F. Paloutzian, Rodger K. Bufford, Ashley J. Wildman
Spiritual Well-Being Scale: Mental And Physical Health Relationships (Chapter 48 Of Oxford Textbook Of Spirituality In Healthcare), Raymond F. Paloutzian, Rodger K. Bufford, Ashley J. Wildman
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
The existence of this handbook documents the recent increase in research on and practical attention to the role of spirituality in healthcare. One essential companion to the concept of spirituality is spiritual well-being (SWB).[1] That is, although the degree and type of spirituality per se can no doubt play an important role in how well a person faces the dilemmas related to health issues,[2,3] the degree to which a person perceives or derives a sense of wellbeing from that spirituality may be equally or more important. In this connection, SWB is an outcome indicator, or barometer, of how well a …
An Integration Approach (Chapter 4 Of Counseling And Christianity, Five Approaches), Mark R. Mcminn
An Integration Approach (Chapter 4 Of Counseling And Christianity, Five Approaches), Mark R. Mcminn
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
I puzzle over the adage "to have yout cake and eat it too." If one has cake , why wouldn't they eat it?1 To have your cake and not eat it just seems silly. In the same way, if Christian counselors have the rich theoretical and scientific tradition of psychology to draw upon, why wouldn't they do so? And if the counselor has access to biblical revelation and the theological wisdom of the centuries, of course the counselor should rely on these resources also.
Counseling And Psychotherapy Within And Across Faith Traditions (Chapter 17 In The Oxford Handbook Of The Psychology Of Spirituality), Mark R. Mcminn
Counseling And Psychotherapy Within And Across Faith Traditions (Chapter 17 In The Oxford Handbook Of The Psychology Of Spirituality), Mark R. Mcminn
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
This chapter begins with general considerations for religiously and spiritually oriented psychotherapy, including the importance of seeing religion and spirituality as d.imensions of cultural diversity, considering clients' welfare and autonomy, and maintaining competence. Three types of religious and spiritual intervention approaches are then discussed: assimilative, accommodative, and collaborative. Assimilative approaches introduce spiritual interventions or considerations into a standard psychotherapy approach. Accommodative approaches involve adapting a standard psychotherapy regimen to include religious or spiritual matters. Collaborative approaches entail a mental health professional and religious leader working in tandem for the sake of clients' welfare. Next, specific issues related to counseling within …
Theism And Psychological Science: A Call For Rapprochement, Michael J. Vogel, Tyler A. Gerdin, Mark R. Mcminn
Theism And Psychological Science: A Call For Rapprochement, Michael J. Vogel, Tyler A. Gerdin, Mark R. Mcminn
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
The authors offer two arguments for the inclusion of theism in natural science. First, an argument against excluding theism is offered. Though early roots of science promoted a view that it is a way to accumulate knowledge that is untainted by presuppositions and traditions, postmodern critiques call this into question. Scientists have sometimes rejected religion as a context-dependent, tradition-based way of knowing, yet science itself is also context-dependent and tradition-based. Second, an argument for including theism in psychological is offered. Theistic beliefs are relevant insofar as they are part of human experience for many, they represent a form of human …

Growing Old (From Dirt And The Good Life), Mark R. Mcminn
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
Excerpt: "After a night interrupted a dozen times or so with a sharp sciatica pain, I felt pleased to see the old digital clock approaching 8:00 as I reached my final awakening-much later than our normal rising and only possible on a sabbatical year. Lisa got out of bed first, rustling the sheets on her side of the bed as I said, "Happy anniversary." Today is our thirty-second. Surprisingly, she didn't respond. She's never been the type to offer silence in response to my words-even when annoyed at me-and I couldn't think of any reason for her to be annoyed …

Children who have been severely maltreated tend to perform significantly below their non-maltreated peers in standardized tests, earn lower grades and have the most discipline issues in the school setting. There is evidence that self-esteem (SE) may be a protective factor for youth with regard to negative emotional outcomes. The role of self-esteem needs to be explored further in more collectivistic cultures. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between physical abuse, SE and school attitudes. Participants included 14 females rescued from a city landfi ll in Nicaragua (ages 7 – 17 years, M = 12.44), half …

“That They All Might Be One”: John R. Mott’S Contributions To Methodism, Interreligious Dialogue, And Racial Reconciliation, Benjamin L. Hartley
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
An extraordinary organizer and leader, Methodist layman John R. Mott (1865–1955) was influential in the establishment and growth of many different world-wide Christian organizations in the early twentieth century. He was even asked to serve as ambassador to China by President Woodrow Wilson—a position he declined. For his work in organizing people and resources for world peace Mott was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946. This article focuses on Mott’s efforts at ecumenism for the sake of Christian mission by analyzing three dimensions of Mott’s work: Mott’s Methodism, his efforts in global interreligious dialogue, and work in racial reconciliation …
Discernment-Oriented Leadership In The Johannine Situation—Abiding In The Truth Versus Lesser Alternatives (Chapter In Rethinking The Ethics Of John: Implicit Ethics In The Johannine Writings), Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Excerpt: "Leadership within the Johannine situation has been approached from various angles, ranging from structures of leadership, to the location of Johannine Christianity with relation to other groups, to the identity/nonidentity of Johannine leaders. Common to these and other inquiries regarding leadership within the Johannine situation, however, is a focus on the character and operation of leadership that is proposed, both of which relate centrally to abiding in the truth. Further, the call to abide in the truth pits this value over lesser alternatives in ways apparent over the longitudinal span of the Johannine situation. It comes to a head …
