Using Students Consultants To Re-Envision Teaching Christian History And Theology, Dan Brunner

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

When it came time to reevaluate and restructure the introductory year in Christian history and theology, I decided to use a roundtable of student consultants to help me in that work. Our research and reflection focused on the impact of postmodern thinking and learning, feedback from pastors in ministry, a desire to bring appropriate praxis into academically focused courses, and a hope to make greater use of technology, This article discusses the consultative process and sketches out key learnings from student research. Concluding reflections focus on technology, a topical, praxis-oriented approach to teaching, the process of utilizing student advisors, and …

A Process Of Restoration For Clergy Guilty Of Sexual Misconduct, Carol Hutchinson May 2005

A Process Of Restoration For Clergy Guilty Of Sexual Misconduct, Carol Hutchinson

Faculty Publications - Department of Professional Studies

Sexual misconduct on the part of clergy is not a new phenomenon. Nevertheless the Church in general lacks a concept of restoration that provides spiritual and emotional healing of an offender within the context of the redemptive community of faith. This dissertation is intended to demonstrate how Scripture, church history, theology and psychology support restoration of fallen clergy. The dissertation will go on then to describe what a process of restoration would include.

The dissertation begins and ends with case studies. Both cases deal with actual events though names and some details have been changed. The first case demonstrates some …

Response To Daniel A. Siedell's "Art And The Practice Of Evangelical Faith-A Review Essay", Douglas Campbell Jan 2005

Response To Daniel A. Siedell's "Art And The Practice Of Evangelical Faith-A Review Essay", Douglas Campbell

Faculty Publications-- Department of Art and Design

Excerpt: "My first response to Daniel A. Siedell's review of my book Seeing: When Art and Faith Intersect was anger. I thought his treatment of my book was unfair. Even now, after some amount of time has elapsed, I still believe his analysis of my book ignored context, was unkind, misleading and inaccurate. My allotted space for response is, however, inadequate to the task of countering his assertions point for point."

Communication, Culture, And Curiosity: Using Target-Culture And Student-Generated Art In The Second Language Classroom, Deborah Berho, Victoria Defferding

Faculty Publications - Department of World Languages, Sociology & Cultural Studies

Studying art from the target culture and student creation of original artwork in the second language (L2) classroom have many benefits. Both provide a springboard for discussion of the culture(s) under study as well as one's own. These activities also positively change the classroom atmosphere, generating student curiosity and lowering the affective filter to language learning. Surprising as it may seem, little has been published about the visual arts and second language acquisition (SLA). This article surveys this limited research, briefly describes how brain research and language learning theories interact with art, ans presents the authors' observations of student response …

Sexual Identity Concerns For Christian Young Adults: Practical Considerations For Being A Supportive Presence And Compassionate Companion, Lisa Graham Mcminn

Most sexual identity development models disregard the importance of valuative frameworks and faith for young adults with same sex attraction. Observations and recommendations are based on 11 years of teaching and mentoring college students, sexual identity development research, and a theological concept of our human will-to-relate.

Home To Jesus (Chapter 9 On Finding Our Way Home), Mark R. Mcminn Jan 2005

Home To Jesus (Chapter 9 On Finding Our Way Home), Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Excerpt: "Like so many, I was raised in a religious home- praying before meals, attending Sunday services, seeking to follow God's will for my life. I remember getting two Christmas presents in ninth grade-a new pair of skis and a new Bible. Honestly, I was more thrilled with the Bible than with the skis (though both gifts made me ecstatic about my generous parents for a few days). I remember wondering in those youthful years why anyone would choose a life apart from Jesus. As I grew toward adulthood I began to understand their reasons. The faith I had loved …

Theological Education And Hybrid Models Of Distance Learning, Steve Delamarter, Dan Brunner Jan 2005

Theological Education And Hybrid Models Of Distance Learning, Steve Delamarter, Dan Brunner

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

The authors document the rise of so-called hybrid models of distance education and articulate their relevance for theological education in North America. In the first section, the authors lay out a typology of the visions for technology current among theological educators. One feature of this typology is the recognition of two very different ways of thinking about distance education. Early-stage thinking is characterized by a strong dichotomy between online and face-to-face courses. Later-stage thinking has tended toward the development of hybrid programs. The following sections explore the history of the development of hybrid models and how hybrid courses and programs …
