The Flaneur In The Borsig Locomotive Works: Walter Benjamin, The Berlin Radio Youth Hour, And Sound As Pedagogy, Kevin S. Amidon

Modern Languages Faculty Publications

Walter Benjamin’s radio addresses for young people remain a comparatively neglected part of his work. New scholarship and translations have begun to address this, however. This arti- cle argues that the radio addresses, and particularly the address on the Borsig locomotive and machine works, deserve a prominent place within the critical and intellectual trajectory of Ben- jamin’s career. A close reading of “Borsig” demonstrates how the addresses model the modes of experience mediated by and through Benjamin’s master figure of the flaneur and generate the possibility for a historical pedagogy adequate to modernity. In the radio addresses, in general, and …

"She Is A Riddle To Them": Angela Tilton Heywood's Sex Radicalism In A Framework Of Traditional Womanhood, Hollie Marquess

Master's Theses

Angela Heywood, a nineteenth century Free Lover, radical, labor reformer, anarchist, and ardent supporter of sexual freedom, has been relegated to the shadow of her husband by most historians. Heywood publicly discussed issues such as birth control, abortion, sexuality, freedom of speech, and Free Love in an open and frank manner, yet she remains virtually absent from texts and other scholarly works. Though she was quite well known in the nineteenth century for her boldness of speech and for her active stance against the Victorian prudery, historians have largely treated her dismissively, giving her only passing mention in favor of …

Best Of All Possible Care : An Examination Of Scientifically Progressive Medicine In Hays From 1867 To 1918, Ben Peeler

Master's Theses

From the mid-nineteenth century until the early decades of the twentieth century, medicine underwent a tremendous transformation. No longer was medicine to be based on archaic theories that were grounded on unquantifiable guesswork. Instead, medicine became scientifically progressive, pushing the reliability and credibility of medical professionals to new heights. Scientific progressivism was the concept of standardizing medicine around a common set of ideals, such as basing treatment upon scientifically sound methods and procedures. A scientifically progressive community can be identified through the application of one or more of the following criteria: education adaptability, and technology. These three criteria could be …

The eventual struggle between these two Weltanschauungen, National Socialism, and Marxism, needed to be translated into reality. The Program of the National Socialist German Worker's Party proposed in Point 22 the creation of a People's Army. After 1941 he intensified his attempts to make the Wehrmacht the tool of National Socialist ideology. It is the purpose of this study to trace Hitler's evolving program of using the military to accomplish his political ends.

The Social Views Of Dwight L. Moody And Their Relation To The Workingman Of 1860-1900, Myron Raymond Chartier

This evaluation is complicated for two basic reasons. The amount of subjectivity that enters into one's assessment always plagues any attempt on the part of the historian to be objective; however, it seems that religious phenomenon is even more difficult to evaluate honestly. This writer believes that he has no "axes to grind" in regard to Moody and the workingman. The record of history has been the primary interest.

Kansas Mennonites During World War I, Arlyn John Parish

The story of the Mennonites of Kansas during World War I has never been told. This account should be of interest both as an incident in general Mennonite history and as an episode in the social history of the United States, for it demonstrates many of the problems of incorporating a minority group into the broader society.

Friedrich Wilhelm Koenig, Paul King May 1936

Friedrich Wilhelm Koenig, Paul King

Master's Theses

It was my first intention to write a biography of my grandfather. This was to be an entirely creative piece of work, based on his Army discharge, an account of his death and burial in the local paper, and the traditions of the family. Because his life after 1875-when he left the 5th Cavalry was so closely connected with the history of Hays, the biography was to stop short, twenty-three years before his death. Hays City from 1875 to 1898, the people, the colorful English colonists east in Victoria, the Russian-Germans, the change of troops at the fort, the fort …

A Study Of The Revolt In Modern American Literature As Seen In The Novel, Poetry, And Prose Fiction, Dovie Viola Ross

Master's Theses

Since the earliest time that the human mind has been known to function it has played with two opposite conceptions ---all is fixed – all is changing. These two conceptions, affording the bases for opposing schools in philosophy and politics and supplying direction for the social forces of conservatism and radicalism, have naturally influenced our interpretation and theories of literature.
