Shades Of Liberalism: Lawyers And Social, Political And Legal Transformations In Nineteenth Century Cuba, Ricardo Pelegrin Taboada Nov 2018

Shades Of Liberalism: Lawyers And Social, Political And Legal Transformations In Nineteenth Century Cuba, Ricardo Pelegrin Taboada

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1819, Ferdinand VII ordered the creation of two Colegios de Abogados in Cuba to prevent the expansion of the number of legal professionals, as well as the unauthorized practice of law. The strategy, however, failed, and lawyers increasingly became a force of political and social change in the island, being mostly inspired by the debates about the implementation of liberal agendas in and out of Cuba. Some Colegios de Abogados eventually became centers of anti-Spanish conspiracy and lawyers even led recurrent uprisings for Cuban independence. Ideas of reform among Cuban lawyers, however, were diverse, and different interpretations of liberalism …

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the ways in which black single mothers in the Washington, DC metropolitan area use material goods and consumption practices to inform their identities as members of the middle class. Black middle class women are challenging stereotypes surrounding single mother households, the idea of family, and class status in the United States, as more women overall are having children while single, delaying or deciding against marriage, and are entering the middle and upper-middle classes as a result of advanced education and career opportunities. Because of these demographic and sociocultural shifts, the romanticized “nuclear family” which consists of a …

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the intellectual discourse on race in the early twentieth century, particularly from 1919 to 1958, examining how British and American eugenicists and Caribbean nationalists debated the limits of colonial politics in the British Caribbean using academic and scientific language. Automatic Extraction Of Narrative Structure From Long Form Text, Joshua Daniel Eisenberg

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Automatic understanding of stories is a long-time goal of artificial intelligence and natural language processing research communities. Stories literally explain the human experience. Understanding our stories promotes the understanding of both individuals and groups of people; various cultures, societies, families, organizations, governments, and corporations, to name a few. People use stories to share information. Stories are told –by narrators– in linguistic bundles of words called narratives.

My work has given computers awareness of narrative structure. Specifically, where are the boundaries of a narrative in a text. This is the task of determining where a narrative begins and ends, a …

This book addresses lessons to be learned about the nature of civic life from the experience of Cuban Miami. Drawing upon original ethnographic research, it looks into the cultural politics that leads to civic organizations success. Four different civic organizations are examined-Municipalities of Cuba in Exile, League Against …

Criollos, Peninsulares, And The University Of Havana's Commemoration Of The Third Centenary Of Don Quixote (1905), Ricardo Castells

Cuban Research Institute Events

The third centenary of the publication of Miguel de Cervantes'Don Quixote was celebrated throughout the Spanish-speaking world, but the Cuban commemoration was particularly problematic because of the social divisions that remained on the Island following the recent War of Independence of 1895-1898. On the one hand, the conservative Diario de la Marina newspaper used the centenary to celebrate the cultural relations between Spain and Cuba in an elaborate program held in what is now the Gran Teatro de la Habana Alicia Alonso. On the other, the University of Havana held its own commemoration one week later to honor Cervantes while …

Easy Riders Lost In America: Marx, Mobility And The Hollywood Road Movie, Steven E. Alford Jul 2018

Easy Riders Lost In America: Marx, Mobility And The Hollywood Road Movie, Steven E. Alford

Class, Race and Corporate Power

The movement of people and settlement of the American west has been psychologically and sociologically represented as engendered by a sense of Manifest Destiny. Yet, the western migration was fueled by capitalist corporations seeking profit by exploiting international markets for goods through extractive practices (principally animal pelts, fish, and lumber): the Hudson's Bay Company, the North West Company, and millionaire American capitalist John Jacob Astor. The economic foundations of settlement have, however, been erased in cinematic representations of this history, replaced first by the Hollywood Western and its myth of frontier individuality, and subsequently by the Hollywood road movie, concerned …
